...Short and Medium Term Development for Umm Qasr Robert C. Haywood, SEDA-MND(SE) April 9, 2008 Basra Summary and Conclusion: The Port of Umm Qasr is an outdated, badly operated, insecure small port in Southern Iraq, which will increasingly limit the economic potential of the country. Access to the port is naturally limited by its shallow river location, high silt deposit rates, long approach and international boundaries. Umm Qasr activities are also limited by man-made obstacles such as wrecks, UXOs and minefields encroaching on its single, narrow channel. Despite these limitations, for the next 10 to 15 years Umm Qasr is clearly Iraq's most viable international port and one that is struggling to achieve a small fraction of its potential traffic. Numerous surveys of the port have stated that the currently operating equipment for cargo handling is inadequate for a vibrant, functioning port. However, the capacity of the port with its current equipment is substantially greater than what is being achieved, and additional equipment alone would have little impact on the port’s overall throughput or employment because the current operating systems and procedures are already incapable of productively utilizing and maintaining the port’s quite substantial current assets. In a port suffering from organizational chaos, even manual systems will permit substantially improved port efficiency. Training in systems to minimize cargo handling, documentation management...

...HAZRAT KHADIJA Hazrat Khadijah was the first wife of The Holy Prophet(PBUH) Her father's name was Khuwaylid bin Asad and he was a wealthy trader. Her mother and father both died within 10 years of each other. Their wealth was divided amongst the children but it was Hazrat khadija(SA) who took over the family business and expanded it. With the profit she made she helped the poor, widows, orphans, sick and the disabled people of Makka. She had a cousin called Waraqa bin Naufal who was very learned man and who was not an idol worshipper. Both Waraqa and Hazrat Khadija were monothiests and believed in one Allah. Because of her excellent Akhlaq the Arabs (who at that time used to look down upon women) called her Tahira - the pure one. She was also known as the 'Princess of Makkah' because of her wealth. A lot of Arab nobles and princess wanted to marry her but she refused all of them. In 595 AD, Hazrat Khadija was looking for someone to be in charge of her caravan to Syria. Hazrat Abu Talib(AS) suggested the Prophet Mohammad(pbuh&hf) to her. She had heard of his trustworthiness and agreed to employ him although he did not have much trading experience. To help him she sent her slave Maysara. Soon it was arranged for Hazrat Khadija(SA) to be married to the Prophet Mohammad(pbuh&hf). At that time, Prophet Mohammad(pbuh&hf) was aged 25 and Hazrat Khadija(SA) was 40 years of age. According to Shiite tradition, this was her first marriage and that she was not a widow...

...Umar ibn al-Khattāb Tribe: Umar (ra) belonged to the “adi family of the Quraish tribe. Birth: He was born in 583 AC about 40 years before the great hijrah. In his youth he was a great wrestler, orator and a spirited person. Education: He was among the few people in Mecca who knew reading and writing before Islam. Occupation: His main occupation was business. Umars acceptance of Islam: During the 6th year of the prophets mission when the Quraish leaders called a meeting and ask for a volunteer for the assassination of the Prophet (saw) Umar offered himself for this job. While on his way with a sword in his hand he met Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas who asked of him and about his destination. Umar told him he was going to murder the Prophet (saw). After some discussion Sa’d said you had better take care of your own family first. Your sister and brother in law have accepted Islam. Hearing this Umar changed his direction and went straight to his sister’s house. When Umar knocked on the door they were studying the Holy Quran from Khabbab. His sister Fatimah was frightened on hearing Umars voice tried to hide the portion of the Quran she was reciting. When Umar entered the house he enquired about their Islam and on finding that they had accepted Islam he first fell upon his brother in law and beat him severely. When his sister stepped in to help he smote her so violently on her face she it bled profusely. ON this his sister burst out “DO whatever you like, we are determined...

...Here you go. Be warned...it's long: Ok, so here’s the argument: Let’s begin with the traditional narrative: At Muhammad’s death, there is a power struggle between Abu Bakr and Ali. The supporters of Abu Bakr’s claim are the Sunnis, the supporters of Ali’s claim are the Shi’ite. The Sunnis believe that leadership should be elected from those who deserve it, the Shi’ite believe it should be passed down Muhammad’s bloodline. The Sunnis win out and Abu Bakr takes power. Over time, these two groups have various fights resulting in the civil war termed the Fitnah. There are major theological which are a direct result of differences on where spiritual authority rests. My response: None of this makes sense. Let’s start at the beginning. At Muhammad’s death, there is supposedly a struggle between Abu Bakr and Ali over who should be the leader. This doesn’t make sense. Ali is far too young to be a contender for leadership. Remember, this is still in the early stages of Islam, so everyone is used to the pre-Islamic leadership structure. The leader is traditionally the sheikh, an elder of the tribe who brings wisdom and experience to the table. Abu Bakr, at 61 years old, fits that bill. Ali? He’s in his early 30’s. No one will take his leadership seriously. And that’s something that is very important because whoever takes leadership is going to face rebellion. What happens when you have an extremely strong leader and he dies? People start rebelling. They test how much power the successor...

...Cindy Pfiffer Final Term Paper The First Fitna The first Muslim civil war originated in the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs which began in 632 CE following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The main events of the civil war technically took place from 656-661 CE, however, in order to understand these events properly, it is necessary to recount the context and setting in which these events took place. In 644, after a ten-year reign, the second caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab was assassinated in Medina as he was leading a prayer in the mosque. He was reportedly killed by a Christian slave named Abu Lu’lu’a who was upset by a tax imposed by the caliph. Upon realizing that his wounds were fatal, ‘Umar did not appoint a successor but rather appointed a council, or shura, to choose the next caliph. This council consisted of a group of six Muslims which included ‘Uthman ibn Affan, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Zubayr ibn al-‘Awamm, Talha ibn ‘Ubaydallah, and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas. This small group was to choose a ruler amongst themselves. It was a tightly knit group, all early converts from the Quraysh tribe who had together endured a decade of persecution in Mecca, a decade of war against Mecca, and had just emerged from a decade of victorious conquests under ‘Umar’s leadership. With the hindsight of history and in an attempt to explain the later schisms within Islam, commentators would try to divide this group into competing factions. This doesn’t really work, for by...
