Umbc Undergrad Admission Essay

...Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you. From the age of four, I was accompanying my mother on her intense rounds of volunteer activities. The constant exposure to food drives, toy drives, and awareness-raising events created in me an intense desire to serve my local community, and to improve the quality of life of those around me. As I grew older, I became concerned about what I viewed as not enough connection and service within my community. I resolved not to let myself become apathetic or unaware of the needs of the people around me, but instead to become a leader who also inspired others to become involved. I began working independently as a volunteer with several organizations, particularly the Montgomery County Muslim Council (MCMC) and the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation (MCMF). Through these groups, I have worked to serve underprivileged populations, to empower youth, and to increase public awareness of local and state issues. I have been fortunate to meet with local officials, such as Montgomery County’s County Executive Isaiah Leggit and County Council Member George Leventhal, and to witness firsthand how change is created within my local government. In addition to becoming politically aware, it has been important to me to give back to the community that has shaped me into who I am. Throughout the year, I work with MCMF to do food drives. During the holidays, I help make and...

Tips on Application to B-School

...an area that interests you. Try to become the head of a club, the captain of a sports team, the editor of a magazine, or the director of a movie. B-schools will look for that kind of engagement and "management" experience. They want to know that you are good at interacting with people, that you have some "leadership" skills, and that you are invested enough in what you do to want to take ownership of it. Now, about work experience. It used to be the case that very few students came straight from undergrad programs into Business School. Although schools now seem to be admitting more and more students straight out of college, it is still rare and you may find yourself struggling with many parts of the application. Each application asks specific essay questions about "leadership" and personal experience, and the more varied and interesting your responses, the better your essays. Since most undergrad programs are similar, it will therefore be harder for you, as an undergrad, to put the same amount of color and diversity into your application as someone who has been...

My Goals

...fields, this is the one I enjoy the most. I have already begun step one of my plan to become a therapist. I am currently working towards a degree in psychology which is the foundation of all the jobs in my field of interest. Once I have my undergrad I need to narrow down what specific career I want. The term therapist is a broad term used to describe the many different types of healthcare professionals who specialize in providing mental health services. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, professional counselors and psychiatric nurses can all work as therapists. I have already narrowed it down to either a psychiatrist or family therapist. I plan on joining the Air Force after getting my undergrad degree. This will serve the dual purpose of paying for my school, working with military personnel and their families. If I choose to become a psychiatrist I will need to go to the doctorate level. I could acquire my master’s degree then work as a family therapist in the air force while simultaneously earning my doctorate degree to become a psychiatrist. In conclusion, I am not yet decided on a specific career. Therefore I cannot layout a complete plan on how I will become a professional. All I can do at this point is earn my undergrad degree and trust that God will reveal what he wants me to do next. This doesn’t mean I won’t be proactive or delay making a decision. I will however trust in the Lord and let him guide my...

Becoming A Physician Assistant

...After graduating high school I plan to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As of now, I am an undecided major, but that will change soon. UAB has so many undergrad majors and minors that cater to many healthcare professions. So whatever undergrad degree I choose will help me to become successful in the future. I also have to make sure I have the prerequisites for what every school program I decide to attend. Most programs accept nothing below a 3.0 and a C in each of your required classes. So this means while doing my undergrad I have to make sure I maintain good grades. Upon completion of both my undergraduate degree and PA school (which takes approximately 2-3 years to complete), I can obtain the necessary degrees and certificates to become a practicing physician's...

During my undergrad years, many of my professors advised me against this decision because most people lose the motivation and drive to return to school In undergrad. This did not concern me because I always follow through with my plans. During these two years I would work hard to learn the system of serving in the field of human services. I had recently started to look for employment in the field and after reviewing several sites; however, I did not find much interest in my work, so I requested updates about jobs...

Difference Between Graduate and Undergraduate Studies

...In my opinion one of the major difference between graduate and undergraduate studies is autonomy. In undergraduate studies, students are pretty much guided through the entire process. In some institutions, your undergrad advisor will almost hold your hand along the process. Not that I’m saying advisors don’t help you in graduate school, but there is more that is expected from you at this level. You are expected to be more independent and responsible while in graduate school. Another difference, is that during your graduate studies you are learning more specialized material. Usually, undergrad focuses on more broad and general concepts. However, in graduate school you are most likely specializing in a particular area within your field. The material is generally more intense and requires much more time. There is more reading and writing involved in graduate school. The amount of writing required throughout your undergraduate studies, is not nearly as much as your graduate studies require. You are required to do much more research, and are expected to present it in a professional manner. In most cases you are required to present a thesis at the end of you program. You are expected to be self-driven and self-motivated. I also believe that the information is much more interesting in graduate school. Since most student already probably work in the field, the material is often something one can relate to. This, in my opinion, makes it more interesting and enjoyable. Good luck to us...

...I also worked for two years as a student assistant to the Dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health, where I was responsible for organizing events such as open houses, commencement and convocation as well as managing the schedule and appointments of the Dean. Organizing these events and managing schedules has taught me valuable skills regarding communication and organization that I will be able to use to call and coordinate meetings with patients regarding upcoming appointments and education sessions. I have also held positions of secretary in two clubs and the vice president and president of a club at Rutgers - New Brunswick as an undergrad, which has given me valuable experience of being a liaison between the members and the leaders of an organization. As an undergrad, I also taught chemistry to students from minority and underserved backgrounds through the organization ODASIS. Working with diverse and often minority populations has provided me with an understanding of various cultures and instilled in me an awareness for the importance of not only providing medical care, but also providing medical education in these communities. Therefore, I intend to use my experiences in teaching to not only aid in organizing...

Why I Decided to Get an Mba Degree

...most proud moments in my life, I felt a since of accomplishment, responsibility, and acceptance. I just knew I was going to now be able to provide better for my family. That is why everyone around me said goes to college. Finish and graduate. A college degree can only help you and not hurt you. Well that statement can be a bit misleading, while yes a college degree won’t hurt you, it didn’t help me much either. I got into a situation that I had the degree but lacked the experience. Why didn’t anybody tell me to work as well? Get an internship? A mentor? I guess everyone had the misconception that college degrees grantee a good paying job; however, sometimes it’s not the case. I have come to say continuing education, even well beyond an undergrad, will not only help your career situation, but set a standard for your family and or kids, to always continue learning. Objection: An MBA will not guarantee a good job. It won’t guarantee a job, but what does? Having an MBA has put me more marketable with employers. Bryan Cohen argues that “First-year accountants with an associate degree made an average of $33,300 per year, while those with an MBA earned $39,800 per year as of April 2011 (Cohen, 2001). MBA open a world of big possibilities in a career field., The reason I decided, why not get my degree, is because I know it will pay off in the long run, when I want to pursue positions in management. “On average, you can expect to earn 50 percent more than you were earning before you...

My Educational Journey: Bronx Community College

...My educational journey started at Bronx Community College and Thomas Edison State College. I was intimidated by college work which showed in my grades. I was discouraged about school but I was encouraged by my sister to continue my educational journey. Media is a powerful tool and through this medium I heard about CUNY School of Professional Studies. I learned about the DCAS program through the Internet and commercials about the program. These commercials caught my eye and I decided to attend a CUNY Information Session. I made the decision to attend and I am glad I did because I have enjoyed my time at the School of Professional Studies. Summary

...to the lecture notes (UNV-501 Notes), as a Graduate student, you will be asked to deepen your thinking, share your experiences and challenge your mindset. The courses I attempted at the undergrad level were more of an introductory period for me. I was building the foundation for my learning of Early Childhood Education and I was responsible primarily for remembering most of the information I was learning. I do not feel like I fully examined the who, what and why’s of the concepts I was studying. My graduate studies experience will allow me to dig deeper into the different areas of Early Childhood Education. According to Blooms Taxonomy, (UNV-501 Notes), I will begin to think at a much higher level. I will put more thought and consideration into the concepts that I am learning. I would describe a graduate learning community as one consisting of staff and students sharing similar interests. Both staff and peers work together to grow and develop intellectually. This learning community participates in discussions and regular feedback is given by the instructor. The key components of a learning community would be that both sides allow each other to be heard. Participants feel comfortable enough to express themselves. A graduate learning community might be different from an undergrad learning community mainly because you have participants with a college degree and as such they come equipped with a prerequisite amount of knowledge to add to the discussions. They are coming...
