Now faculty members, school administrators and corporate recruiters are questioning the value of a business degree at the undergraduate level. The biggest complaint: The undergraduate degrees focus too much on the nuts and bolts of finance and accounting and do not develop enough critical thinking and problem-solving skills through long essays, in-class debates and other hallmarks of liberal-arts courses. Companies say they need flexible thinkers with innovative ideas and a broad knowledge base derived from exposure to multiple disciplines. And while most recruiters do not outright avoid business majors, companies in consulting, technology and even finance say they are looking for candidates with a broader academic background. Firms are looking for talent. They're not looking for content knowledge. Students are motivated only by grades and instructors by evaluations. ...I never truly grasp the concept of “benignancy” until I met my host family on the edge of Sioux Falls, a place where I would call “home” since then. From them I have learned that benignancy is the high erect of humanity; it is compassion, selflessness, and hope. My host parents, Peter and Susan, are both pure and pious Catholics. Together with their three sons, three international boarding students including me made up this family of benignancy. From them, I learned the highest level of benignancy is compassion. One of my daily routine is to embrace the vivacious welcome from some of the thirty plus homeless dogs that Susan took under her wings. Susan demonstrated for me that benignancy is unconditional, regardless how dirty looking, disabled, or sick the homeless dogs are, and Susan displayed the same level of affection. Whenever any of them get sick or injured, Susan takes them to the veterinary immediately no matter how late it is. When I first arrived, I asked Susan to why not let the community to take in some of the stray dogs. She refused and claimed “They need family”. It is true, we all need family. Now as I cleaned the yard and washed the dogs habitually with my host brothers and roommates, I find joy in offering my helping hands to this compassionate lady. I later changed my focus of study to Africana Studies only because the university that I attended was heavily impacted in my department. School can often be a challenge because of any and everything that we have going on in our lives, but I do love learning. I enjoy being in a classroom setting and bouncing off ideas from my peers. I find that it can be difficult to find the energy to attend classes, be it in the evening or on the weekend only because I do work full time and work schedules can often be demanding. Furthermore, although I enjoy a class setting, I do like completing projects on my own, as you are not dependent on another person and will never be in a position to pull another persons weight. During undergrad, I worked in retail as it allowed me to work when I was available. Currently, I work for a start up, SoFi Lending, where we specialize in refinancing student loans and also offer personal loans and mortgages. The jobs that I’ve held have helped me to develop my skills in customer service and communication.
