It’s extremely hard being a college-age student. Especially when you have overbearing, over protective parents. The article “No Escape From Helicopter Parents” explains that in great detail and acts as a means to inform and/or make people, parents in particular, aware of what their actions have on their offspring. I grew up as a military brat (US Army) and traveled all over the place. My parents were young and actually still growing up when I was a kid. So I wouldn’t classify them as “helicopter parents”. In this essay I will go in depth on the targeted audience, the purpose of the article and the larger context or the article.

This article is clearly aimed directly at parents. The author even goes so far as directly addressing them by using “you” and in a sense pointing them out. The article flat out tells the targeted parents which are “baby-boomers” that they are too obsessed with their children. The term “baby-boomers” refers to people born post WWII which would include parents who are 51 and 70 years old today. The writer feels that these parents are guilty of inflating their kids’ egos as well as are more concerned with being their kids friend as oppose to being their parent.

The purpose of this article is to bring to the attention of parents, in particular the “baby-boomers” the impact of their parenting style. They have good intentions with the “hovering” and lenience in parenting but it in fact cripples children. Constantly being there and endorsing mediocracy actually enables them to become functional adults. Essentially these parents are trying to live through their kids instead of letting them grow on their own and be their own person. The impact also goes far beyond just their kids, it actually creates generational changes as well.

Not all “baby-boomer” parents are enablers and live through their kids nor feel that it is necessary to “hover” and constantly control their kids’ lives or even be their “best friend”. Some actually feel the opposite yet maintain a middle ground. They focus on pushing education, discipline and being independent without building a false sense of reality. It is important to be there for your kids but you can’t hold their hand all through life and basically be a bodyguard. Kids have to make mistakes in order to grow and learn.

As a child of “baby-boomers” and a parent myself, I can see all sides of this argument. Children raised in the 60s had it rough. There was a lot going on and the world was experiencing major changes. I think “hovering” parents have good intentions but didn’t quite figure out or understand the impact of trying so hard to be the total opposite of their parents. As a parent myself, I believe that you should be close with your children but that it is very important that they understand that you are not one of their peers and are not on the same level. You are their parent. Not saying that you have to be an absolute ruler but you do need to make sure they understand who is in charge and have respect for the fact that you are a parent first and foremost. There will be times where they are upset or don’t like the decisions you make in regards to them but in the end they’ll thank you for it.

Understanding Rhetorical Structures

...EN1420 Understanding Rhetorical Structures Since 2008, the United States economy has been in a recession. The recession has caused many individuals to lose employment, homes, and savings. The economy collapsed due to a variety of reasons of poor finance, lack of regulations, and government legislation. The politicians in Washington have attempted several methods to inject life into the economy. One common practice to boost local and government economies is through taxation. The practice was first introduced through President Ronald Reagan. His idea involved that lowering taxes for wealthy would increase an economy. The purpose of this analysis is to examine a recent article that proposes in today’s era that lowering taxes for the wealthy is not a solution. The article is developed to provide an insight to the different strategies for economic relief. There are a variety of ways our politicians can attempt to stimulate the economy. First, they could lower taxes for everyone. This would in effect give all people a better financial position to spend and boost local economies. Lowering of taxes could also be class targeted. The argument is based on leaving money in the hands of those who will use the money to expand business and increase prosperity, including creating new jobs as stated by (Numbers Don’t Lie, 2012.) President Ronald Reagan is credited with first using this method. During his administration he lowered the taxes on the wealthy. The theory...

Analysis 1.1: Understanding Rhetorical Structure

...Analysis 1.1: Understanding Rhetorical Structure Cesar Diaz-Medina EN1420 ITT-Technical Institute, 054 Arizona bills require police to wear body cameras What is happening in the Old Pueblo? Tucsonan’s all over the city are in a state of distress over the recent but dramatic crime wave that has struck the City. “In the wake of several high-profile police shooting deaths, two bills have been introduced in the Arizona Legislature this session calling for all law-enforcement officers to wear body cameras,” ( Patrick McNamara para. 1). The real question on many citizens’ minds is “to who are these bills really protecting and how are we benefiting?” In response Rep. Reginald Bolding, D-Phoenix had to this say “The genesis of the bill comes from the community distrust issues that we’ve seen,”. (McNamara para. 3). So due to the increase of crime in Tucson and the general distrust from the people towards law enforcement, the government would have the general public believe that the implementation of body cameras on every police officer is in the people’s best interest. For many concerned Tucsonan’s this is nothing more than to suppress the people and misuse city funds when it can very well be used in more beneficial ways, one example given was “have you driven through South Tucson lately?” She explains how the roads are all full of patches and potholes as opposed to being repaved. United States Marine Jim McCoy shared his thoughts on the matter “If anyone should be wearing body...

...ITT EN 1420 Understanding Rhetorical Structures Can the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) live on as Legend? As Michelle Lawhorn tries to explain in her editorial “Star Wars: Is the EU Really Gone?” (Lawhorn, 2014) Michelle reminds readers that George Lucas didn’t put his official stamp on any novel, comic, or game saying that is truly what happens in the Star Wars universe. The EU is a collection of authors that had continued to further tell the stories of Star Wars after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (ROTJ) in the absence of any more movies by George Lucas. Fans fell in love with these stories and believed them to be cannon and official Star Wars storyline. Then George Lucas sells Star Wars to Walt Disney and Disney announces that the EU is considered non-cannon in future films and novels and fan were extremely upset. Michelle does a great job explaining that the Star Wars history has not been erased in any way and that all novels, comics, and games will be rebranded Legends. Many fans of the EU thought that many of their beloved characters would disappear and be forgotten. Michelle reassures the readers that this is not the case “See, here’s the thing: the EU was never canon to begin with. George Lucas never signed off on any novel, game, or comic to be official canon…Basically, the EU was unofficial “official” fan fiction.” (Lawhorn, 2014) George Lucas basically let different departments within Lucas Film continue creating products for Star Wars in order to...

...communication involved in SCT. SCT explains that meanings, emotions, values, and the motives for action are in the communication contexts by people trying to make sense out of a common experience.[2] It explores the human tendency of trying to understand events in terms of the people involved, who have certain personality traits and motivations, and have agency over how the events unfold.[3] SCT was first proposed by Ernest Bormann in the Quarterly Journal of Speech in 1972.[4] Symbolic convergence is related to attribution theory in that it deals with the human tendency to attribute meaning to signs and objects in order to make sense of them.[5] The process of symbolic convergence resembles empathic communication.[5] SCT has a three-part structure: 1. elucidation of the recurring forms of communication involved in a shared group consciousness 2. illustration of why group consciousness begins, rises, and is maintained 3. explanation of the process of how an individual begins to share (or stops sharing) a common symbolic reality [5] | Anatomy of SCT[edit]...

Letter From Birmingham Jail Rhetorical Analysis Essay

...Rhetorical Analysis of The Letter from Birmingham Jail Influential leader of the Civil Rights Movement and active agitator for justice, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. in his letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, argues passionately that injustice anywhere automatically creates the timely situation for organized retaliation in seeking freedom for the oppressed. King was arrested and placed in Birmingham Jail after a peaceful protest in downtown Birmingham. King was “the foremost civil rights leader in America in the 1950s and 1960s” (Kirszner and Mandell 799). “An ordained minister who held a doctorate in theology, King was the head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference” (799). “King and his followers met opposition not only from white moderates but also from some African-American clergymen who thought King was a troublemaker.” King’s opposition labeled his demonstrations and acts against segregation as “untimely”, “unwise”, and...

...Dear Emily, In my honest opinion, I believe your rhetorical essay on “America Needs Its Nerds” by Leonid Fridman was fairly decent, overall. Although you had several strong sentence structures and comments, there are a few weaknesses to your essay which I will try to critique, constructively. The first paragraph in your essay had a strong introductory sentence. It also included the purpose of the paragraph, which was mentioned clearly and thoughtfully. However, you need a stronger assertion sentence in the first body paragraph. Also, there are a few instances where your sentence’s ideas were repeated a few times, so try to proofread your essay and merge the sentences together to come up with a better sentence, or simply exclude one of those sentences. You had great commentaries that show your understanding of the rhetorical strategies that you addressed. However, they’ve only explained “why” a strategy was used but not “how” it was used. The second and third paragraphs had strong assertions as well as implicit quotations from the passage. Although your essay does not include 5 paragraphs, I can conclude that you have good understanding about how to find and explain rhetorical strategies used in passages and texts. You had solid assertions, implicit and strong evidence, as well as fairly thorough commentaries. However, you need to work on maintaining the flow of your essay, reconsidering the optimal vocabulary that could be used in certain sentences, and proofreading your...

...patterns of discourse organization that hold for the entire corpus. This approach is applied specifically to a methodology that is used to analyze texts in terms of the functional/communicative structures that typically make up texts in a genre: move analysis. The resulting corpus-based approach for conducting a move analysis significantly enhances the value of this often used (and misused) methodology, while at the same time providing badly needed guidelines for a methodology that lacks them. A corpus of ‘birthmother letters’ is used to illustrate the approach. Biber et al. (2007) explore how discourse structure and organization can be investigated using corpus analysis; they offer a structured, seven-step corpusbased approach to discourse analysis that results in generalizable descriptions of discourse structure. This article draws on the themes in this book, but focuses in particular on analyses that use theories on communicative or functional purposes of text as the starting point for understanding why texts in a corpus are structured the way they are, before moving to a closer examination and description of the linguistic characteristics and overall organizational tendencies reflective of the corpus. Biber et al. (2007) refer to this as a ‘top-down approach’ to the analysis of discourse structure. (In a bottom-up approach, the lexical and/ or form-focused corpus analysis comes first, and the discourse unit types emerge from the corpus patterns. See Biber et al., 2007, for discussion...

Rhetorical Devices Used In The 60's

...The 60’s was an age of change. This is a fact that is indisputable, and with evidence such as the incident on April 10th, 1962, it is further explorable. Former President John F. Kennedy gave a speech addressing the issue, and throughout he used multiple convincing rhetorical strategies. Using devices such as allusions, personification, and parallelism to show his clear understanding of the seriousness of the situation, as well as the goings-on of the situation itself, and to provide any small amount of security to the general American public. During the second paragraph, former President J.F.K. mentions “four… killed in the last two days”, in which he is referring to the very start of America’s involvement in the war on Vietnam.
