Alice Munro who was born Alice Anne Laidlaw, in Wingham, Ontario, July 10, 1931( Bright and Struthers) author of many works, as well as a mother of three, and a loving wife. Munro is considered to be a Canadian contemporary writer; however she only has one novel titled Lives of Girls and Women published in 1971. Alice not explicitly political or feminist writer, nor does she write autobiography. However, her stories are largely concerned with the struggle between rebellion and respectability (Bright and Struthers). Alice Munro mainly wrote short stories and they reflected deeply with where she grew up. Munro grew up in Wingham, Ontario, Canada. She attended the University of Western Ontario and after two years she left school and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia (Bio Channel Website). Munro has written fiction since 1950. When Munro moved to Vancouver she opened her own bookstore called Munro’s Books, and the appearance of Munro’s first collection of stories. Munro’s first marriage ended in 1972 which prompted her to move back to Ontario and where she eventually retuned to the University of Western Ontario, this time as the writer-in-residence. (Good Reads, 2013) History: Alice Munro was a fascinating author born and raised in a heavily dominate Scottish-Irish community of Wingham, Ontario, Canada. Born on July 10, 1931, she was the eldest of three children and she still resides very close to where she was born and raised. She had a true passion for where her home was and where she felt comfortable. She focused her work on fictional writings. Although she spent her years as a writer, she rarely referred to herself as an author the way her husband did and joked when people referred to her as an author. She thought of herself as just a writer. Alice Munro was a compelling author whose work has landed her numerous awards in several countries and even turned down chances of winning more awards. Influences: Alice Munro had many inspirations to include Updike, Cheever, Joyce Carol Oates, Peter Taylor, and William Maxwell. She is often compared to Chekhov, referring to Cynthia Ozick, when it comes to writing style. She fed off of her inspirations to become the author she is today. How features are utilized in storytelling can contribute to how the reader is affected by the story and the overall understanding behind the story. Point of view and symbols are features that contribute significantly to the overall theme in How I Met My Husband by Alice Munro. An event in Edie’s life as a young teenage girls helps to shape her understanding of finding love in an unexpected manner. Edie first begins to experience life away from her family structure and norms when she is sent to live with and work for the Peebles. This is her first experience with things she is unfamiliar with, but yet curious enough to explore when she explains “the only thing I did not like about working there, in fact was feeling half hungry a lot of the time (Clugston, 2010 para 25). Edie solved this problem by hiding food under her bed. The story is told in first person point of view which contributes to Edie telling the intimate details of how her experience led to how she met her husband. While the story does not give you much insight into how the other characters in the story felt about Edie’s experience, it does invite you into how Edie was affected by her interactions with the characters as she matures throughout the story. Cooper portrays the prejudice ideals of the times and tries to show the reader how silly they are. As well as addressing racial prejudice, he skirts the bounds of interracial relationships and taboos for his time. He also demonstrates a distinct difference in groups of American Indians. While they all portray violent tendencies, he does make a distinction. Cooper used each character to embody a belief or a stereotype. Duncan Hayward, the white major of the English army, represented the conservatives of his time. He also was a classic embodiment of racial prejudice. For example, Colonel Munro had two daughters, Cora and Alice. In the first part of the book, we grow to love Cora as a character. She has been outspoken with her opinions and heeded for them. About halfway through the book it is revealed that Cora is part black. This is another example of Hollywood veering completely away from the book. In this scene, it is startling to realize that Cora not only overcame the sexist mindset of the time and was respected for her mind, but she overcame the racist tendencies of many people as well. Ample evidence is given in the novel of the destruction caused to the Indians by the coming of the whites—Hawkeye himself acknowledges that this is so. The reason that Magua was driven from the Hurons, for example, was because the whites introduced the Indians to alcohol, and he fell victim to it. The savagery of the conflict between whites and Indians is apparent in numerous incidents. The two races do not understand each other’s ways, even though they make many alliances with each other according to what they believe is in their best interest. Generally speaking, Hawkeye, Heyward, and David Gamut, each in his different way, represent the values of white civilization. Heyward represents the military ideal; David represents the sect of Protestantism known as Calvinism. Hawkeye is a more complex case because he in a sense lives in both worlds, Indian and white, and has great respect for some of the Indian ways. Although he thinks Indians other than Delawares and Mohicans are liars and “varlets,” he acknowledges the validity of their religion and respects many of their customs. However, Hawkeye still sees a wide gulf between the ways of the “Mingo” and those of the white man. ...The short story The short story -- Alice Munro an exception, (perhaps) -- is an illustration of one facet of human nature. Often a character undergoes some event and experiences something which offers him change. This is why it's said that short stories usually "say something", often a narrow or small something, but sometimes delivered with such precision that the effect is exquisite, even a life-moment for the reader, something akin to a religious experience or seeing a never-to-be-repeated scene in nature. For a minute, let me remind you that, for me, the perfect short story is written with a poet's feel for language, with a poet's precision, and that the shape and sounds and rhythms of the words are more commonly part of the work's effect than is usually seen in the novel. In a poem, the bare words are virtually never the complete meaning. They interact, their sounds do things, and how they are placed on the page matters. The poem tries to create a nugget of truth, an insight into being human and the form is so tight, so sparse that we can argue over exact meanings long into the smoke-laden night.
