...Chapter 2 Galileo’s Great Discovery: How Things Fall Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), the famous Italian mathematician at the leading edge of the scientific revolution that was to sweep Europe, was curious about motion. He was an experimentalist who for the first time had the insight and talent to link theory with experiment. He rolled balls down an inclined plane in order to see how things fell toward the Earth. He discovered in this way that objects of any weight fell toward the Earth at the same rate – that they had a uniform acceleration. He surmised that if they fell in a vacuum, where there was no air resistance to slow some objects more than others, even a feather and a cannon ball would descend at the same rate and reach the ground at the same time. He also explored the motion of pendulums and other phenomena. He is perhaps most famous for his 1610 telescopic discoveries of the moving moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and the craters of the moon, all of which convinced him, against the ages-old wisdom of Aristotle and of the Catholic Church, of the rightness of the Copernican heliocentric view of the solar system. ...Applications of Newton’s Laws of Motion in One Dimension 3 Newton’s laws of motion are a very powerful tool that allows the study of a vast array of problems dealing with the motion of all the objects of our daily lives. Valid over an enormous range of distances, speeds, and masses, Newton’s laws only lose their predictive power in the microworld or when objects travel at extremely high speeds, much higher than we are capable of propelling ordinary objects (except in particle accelerators). In this chapter we continue our study of one-dimensional motion in three “case studies” of interesting example applications. The goal here is to see the power of Newton’s laws as well as to learn some interesting ideas about various types of motion along a single direction. We gain some valuable insights and tools so that when we generalize to study the motion of objects in the real three-dimensional world we are well prepared for that undertaking. The case studies in this chapter include motion when the net force is constant (we study the local gravitational force near the Earth), one-dimensional motion of an object in a fluid (where we show that there are frictional forces that vary with time), and the oscillatory motion of an object attached to a spring. An initial state with long wavelength and low Mach number, such as is realized for a gas bubble driven by an audible sound field, spontaneously focuses the energy density so as to generate supersonic motion and a different phase of matter, from which are then emitted picosecond flashes of broad-band UV light. Although the most rational picture of sonoluminescence involves the creation of a ‘‘cold’’ dense plasma by an imploding shock wave, neither the imploding shock nor the plasma has been directly observed. Attempts to attack sonoluminescence from the perspective of continuum mechanics have led to interesting issues related to bubble shape oscillations, shock shape instabilities, and shock propagation through nonideal media, and chemical hydrodynamics. The limits of energy focusing that can be achieved from collapsing bubbles in the far-off equilibrium motion of fluids have yet to be determined either experimentally or theoretically.
