...Uniforms By: Madison Price Due date: May 3rd, 2013 Outline Topic: Why we shouldn’t have uniforms Intro: The administrators at our wonderful school are very understanding hopefully they will understand my suggestion. All students should be able to show who they are in their clothes. To do that we should never have to wear uniforms. Reason 1: Individuality is how people express themselves by wearing clothes that describe themselves more and by making them wear uniforms they aren't wearing something that is unlike everyone else so they can’t be individual. Reason 2: If more students aren't wearing what they want they’re going to rebel and be meaner then they usually are because they can’t have their clothes the way they want them. More students are going to misbehave and rebel. All those students want are their own styles and fashion statements. Pow: When the administrators put so much focus on what the kids are wearing they may not know how they feel about the uniforms and how comfortable they are in their normal clothes. The administrators care more about the students are wearing than, what their personalities put into their outfits. KB: Administrators may think that their student’s outfits distract them from their work but, most student in River Oaks Middle School love to be comfortable and if they aren't comfortable how is that going to help them with their work when they are...

...School Uniforms For decades, schools, parents and students have argued over the issue of regulating student attire. Uniforms have been instituted throughout history for the purpose of instilling a sense of unity and membership among groups from girl scouts to the National Guard. School boards encouraged that enforcing a type of uniform for the students will help prevent violence, and improve school safety and academic discipline. Parents, however, ponder over how much of an impact dress policies have upon student learning. Opponents insist that there is no credible evidence that school uniforms improve school discipline or promote higher academic achievement. While the debates over whether or not dress codes should be implemented in school continue, it is obvious that both stances contain merit and are not merly invalid, false ideas. Dress codes vary from school to school. One school may require white button-down shirts and ties for boy, pleated skirts for girls and blazers adorned with the school logo for all students, while another school may simply require that all shirts have collars. Most school's dress codes usually prohibits: dying hair unnatural colors, tattoos, large or baggy clothing, holes in clothing, bandanas, hats, sunglasses, visible under garments, pajamas, swim suits, piercings other than earrings, and decorations that are symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms that convey crude, vulgar, profane, violent, gang-related, sexually explicit or suggestive messages. ...

...We Should Not All Be Uniform! Every day, millions of teenagers spend between six and eight hours in America’s high schools. They sit at their desks, listen to their teachers, and do their school work. In some of these schools, however, they are also forced to dress in school uniforms. This restriction is really too much. In America’s high schools, students should not be forced to wear uniforms because they take away a student’s sense of individuality, they do not allow for self-expression, and they absolutely do not save families any money. First of all, students should not wear uniforms because they take away a student’s sense of individuality. Imagine this: 30 students sit in desks in a small classroom. Each student wears tan pants and a white shirt. They sit with their school books and papers in front of them. They all look exactly alike. Does this seem right? Of course not! We are all individuals! We are unique in many different ways. Why try to make all students look alike? This idea is supported by testimony from a 17-year-old student forced to wear uniforms. Her story was reported in National Catholic Reporter of March, 2002, and she said, "Everyone hated it. It completely killed any sense of individuality any one of us had. Everyone looked the same. It was sad to 27 Duddles 2 watch" (3). Clearly, students with experience in wearing uniforms feel that they take away a sense of individuality. Next, school uniforms do not allow students to express themselves...

...Uniforms. They are everywhere. Compulsory for many employees of companies, doctors, soldiers, private schools, they accompany us almost through all our life. And now even students in many public schools are obliged to wear them. For decades students, schools, and parents have budded heads over the issue of a student's attire at school. But do we really need them especially at this tender age. Will they make us more capable, more strict and studious? Students should be given the liberty to wear their choice of attire to school for these reasons: Interference of self-expression, family finances, uniforms are harmful to the transition to adulthood, and they only act as a 'band-aid' towards bulling, gang activities, and cliques. School uniforms in public schools also conflict with a student's freedom of speech as well as their freedom of self expression. Starting from the time we were able to pick out our own clothing, people have been known to express their forming identities as well as how they are feeling. School uniforms demonstrate interference with ones self-expression and sense of creativity. Just by wearing them it discourages students by not allowing their true personality to shine through. In some cases it also offends certain religions or beliefs. According to www.bbc.co.uk (Survey Finds Support for Veil Ban) a study shows that 53% of Britons would support a ban on Muslim women wearing veils in school. Creating a school community based on homogeneity stifles creativity...

...School Uniforms: Turning Our Kids Into Soulless Conformists In text one “School uniforms; pros and cons” (2012) Ann Svensen explains the pros and cons’ of school uniforms. She looks at the subject from different angels and involves and focuses on two main arguments. The first argument she elucidates is the affect that school uniforms have on reducing school crimes and increasing the student’s disciplinary excellence. As for this argument Svensen talks about an informal statistic that showed, that school crime had highly declined over the years in California’s Long Beach Unified School District, after the urban made a mandatory uniform policy. Secondly she writes about, how many experts believe that school uniforms is a negative thing, because it is a violation of the students rights and freedom to express them self. Furthermore, it takes away their individuality. Journalist Laura Clark argues that school uniforms improve pupils in text two “School uniforms improve pupils’ behaviour both in and out of school”(2007). In her article she includes quotes from different professors, who argues that school uniforms makes the students more well behaved both out of and in school. Her main arguments are that school uniforms prevents bullying based on social status and the children don’t have to be insecure or think about their clothing. Furthermore, she argues that it decreases crime since the students know that people outside school will be able to catch them based of their uniforms...

...School Uniforms: What’s the Big Debate? Mar’Kisha Everett English 147 July 8, 2015 University of Phoenix, Anne Cox School Uniforms: What’s the Big Debate? A school uniform is a set of standardized clothes worn primarily for an educational institution. Mention this around many teenagers and you have just started one of the biggest debates maybe ever. But just what is it about requiring kids to wear uniforms at school that seems to get everyone in such an uproar? Freedom of expression and individuality are the top two arguments opposing school uniforms. Enforcing a uniform policy is not an attempt to ignore freedom of expression or to try and stop individuality, it is simply an idea implemented to gain discipline, safety, and professionalism. School uniforms are not just implemented to help students exceed in school alone, but is also a great preparation for the future. Even though many people disagree because of freedom speech or expression, school uniforms are a good idea because they are affordable, they can prevent bullying and violence, and prepare students for a dress code in the workplace. Growing up today is probably not the easiest thing to do. There are many obstacles that may hinder learning in school such as gang violence, abuse from students and faculty, and bullying. Many students are bullied because they don’t look like other students in the class. While enforcing uniforms won’t stop the bullying, ensuring that everyone is in...

...school looking like that.” Why not" I asked," I look fabulous.” Mom replied “You may look fabulous, but that outfit does not meet dress code. Go change!” I sighed and reluctantly went back upstairs to change. As I was changing I thought to myself if there were school uniforms, life would be easier. There would be fewer arguments with your mother, more money to spend on other things, and people would not be judged or judging others by what they wear. First, uniforms will help decrease arguments in the morning before school because they restrict what you can wear. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that would totally stink having to wear the same thing every day. This is not all that bad; you get to sleep longer. The biggest decision of what to wear is made for you. Plus a little bit of extra sleep can do wonders. Besides there are other ways of expressing yourself other than the way you dress, like using your words and your actions. Secondly, the cost of school uniforms is a lot cheaper. You would just have to buy five shirts and five pairs of pants to get you through the week. These should last you all school year because you would not wear them anywhere else, besides who wants to be seen in a school uniform at the mall. Therefore, you would have more money to spend on other things, like seasonal clothes, stylish shoes, and glamourous cosmetics. Finally, if all students dress the same they are less likely to be judged on what they wear. Let’s face it, teenagers are...

...Why a school uniform My opinion about school uniform is that it is a good idea to have a uniform. If school students are poor and rich, you can not find difference between them, if they use school uniform. School uniform can also be good because many students tease others about how their clothes are. I think, it is very good that many schools have uniform. An other advantage for the school uniform could be that you do not always have to change your clothes every second day. Some students will not be mobbed because every students have the same uniform, but boys and girls have difference uniforms. The disadvantage for the school uniform is that parents can not afford it. Sometimes the teacher can be confused, because all students have the same uniform. It might be good if the pupils in our school wear school uniforms. Primarily, the students will see much better with school uniform than the normal clothes, they use everyday at school. Secondarily, any student in the school can not be embarrassed with their clothes. But it is also difficult for the parents to pay the price the school uniforms cots. I am sure that some students and parents are not on this agreement, but I am also sure that some students and parents are with the agreement as described above. The students will be equal with other children, who are rich. Of course, I will wear a school uniform, because I want to try something, I never have done before. Because the students in England use uniforms, I always wonder...

...Analysis of The Uniform Approach Works Schools standards have for a long time been declining and Elspeth Insch sees it as a vicious circle when a school has a bad reputation. In the article The uniform approach works by Mary Braid from The Summer times the 11th July, 2004. Elspeth Insch is showing three aspects, which could do a good part of improving the standards of the schools, but also to make the school self-govern and to improve the teaching and the teachers. Elspeth Insch is operating on a problem which Insch makes quite clear: declining of schools standards. Insch is a head herself so this problem is very relevant. She opens the article with this topic, followed by her own meaning of how to push up the standards by introducing the three aspects: school uniforms, competitive sports and a better house system, which she has used at her own school: King Edward VI Handsworth School in Birmingham, and has had positive effects on the students. Insch thinks that introducing uniforms would make every student equal and there would be no such thing as fashion competition. Insch believes that a uniform is a social leveller and a symbolic aspect, because it makes an air of business and high standards. * Then she is arguing for each aspect. * In the ending she shais that the real problem is a lack of good theachers, and she says that her suggestions is only cosmetic and the real problem lies in the teachers, and it is not enough that the goverment has improved teachers...

...by Charles Evans Hughes, US Supreme Court Justice, 1925. Uniforms were first introduced to public schools in 1994, yet today reports show that there is still a huge conflict over the benifits of wearing uniforms in public schools. Those in favor of uniforms states violence at school over name brand attire, school attendance, and social and economic barriers as reasons for mandatory uniforms. These are important aspects, but they can not be the only facts taken into consideration when deciding on mandatory uniform policies. Public schools should not be allowed to force students to wear uniforms because it puts limitations on students ability to express thier individuality,...

...School Uniform School uniforms would produce a safe and structured learning environment for students. Which is the first requirement of a good school. Students that feel safe in their environment are more apt to learn and not worry about their appearance. School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be enforced. Resistance is always a problem when trying to make changes. Taking all things into account, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be mandatory in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents. By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved and a dress code can enforce discipline towards learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success as students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion show or competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades and part of the change is because it would be easier for students to focus on their academics when everyone is dressed the same. School uniforms would also decrease violence in public schools. There would be less peer pressure toward trying to fit in with the in-crowd and distractions...
