Motherboards
The motherboard represents the logical foundation of the computer. Everything on the computer must be connected to the motherboard. When building a computer you must first decide what Motherboard or what CPU you will use, because your Motherboard will tell you what CPU you should buy and vise-versa. In that note, you can’t buy a case without your Motherboard selected, the size and shape of your case are determined by the form factor of your Motherboard.
Form Factors:
ATX
* ATX replaced the older AT because of its more compact design and it’s better organized which makes it easier to work on. * ATX support 20 pin P1 connector and the newer 24 pin P1 Connector. * Supports 2 IDE Connectors and will probably have 1 or 2 SATA connectors * Soft Power Switch which allows for the PC to go through the shutdown process by not immediately shutting off when button pressed.
BTX
* This Form Factor is compatible with all of the ATX functions including the 20 and 24 pin connector * It was designed for better airflow with an intake vent on the front and Exhaust vent on the back, to work with this design CPU and Memory is installed parallel which creates better cooling for the CPU(No blocked airflow).

NLX * Supports Riser cards. These are cards that connect to the motherboard expansion slots to allow connection of additional expansion cards. * Riser cards are also known as Daughter cards
BUSES
* The copper traces you find on the bottom of your motherboard is considered the Bus System. It is considered the streets and highways that connect your components and transfer your data and power amongst them. * The system bus is the largest and fastest of the buses. Its purpose is to connect from the Motherboard to the CPU and back to the Motherboard.
Expansion slots were 8 bit on the earlier computers. Now we use 16 bit expansion slots which carry twise the traffic the 8 bits carried. The expansion slots that we use are: * PCI, PCIx, PCIe * AGP which was specifically for Video
PCIe being the fastest of all and soon to fully replace the AGP also. You will not find both PCIe and AGP on today’s Motherboards, it is not supported.
There are a various connectors you need to be able to identify on the Motherboard. * P1 power supply - Pin 20 and Pin 24 Connector * 40 Pin IDE Connector * 34 Pin Floppy Drive Connector * SATA Connector * 50 or 68 Pin Internal SCSI Connector

I have learned that you will not find both a AGP and a PCIe expansion port on a Motherboard these days. You will either have 1 AGP and multiple PCI’s or 1 PCIe and multiple PCI’s. I think the NLX form factor had a great advantage because you can add riser cards and have more expansion slots in case you needed to add more components.

...Alberto Legra 01/28/2016 Unit 6 Assignment 1: Video summary 4 (RAID) 1. URL Of video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE7Bfw9lFfs 2. Summary of video. In this video we learn the meaning of raid, what it does, and how to efficiently configure raid arrays. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The three most common types of RAID; RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10. Different raid configurations offer different advantages, like speed and reliability. RAID 0 is all about speed, by striping the data across 2 drives you can keep all of the capacity and double the read and write performance. However, RAID 0 provides no reliability, if one of your drives fail you will all of your data. RAID 1 in the other hand provides maximum reliability, but no performance increase. When both performance and reliability are needed, there is the option for a RAID 10 configuration. To configure a RAID 10 array, you need four drives, stripe the data on all four drives and mirror two against two. This RAID configuration allows you to get about double the performance and capacity of an individual drive, and you can lose up two drives without losing any data. 3. 3 topics mentioned in the video. * The meaning of RAID * Pros and cons of RAID configurations * How to configure RAID 4. 3 terms used in the video and their definitions. * Data striping: The technique of segmenting logically sequential data, such as a file. * RAID: Data storage virtualization technology...

Summary: The video taught me that everything that was developed after series 9x of operating systems is built on the NT platform. Also the NT did not have a device manager or a hardware wizard as well as not supporting plug and play. I also learned that Linux was developed by a Finnish student named Linus Torvalds. This information is not really useful for me its old information that for me has no value unless I want to be a technology historian. Because in the video she doesn’t go in to full detail about everything, but as you read more in the book you pick up on certain things. Some of the things that were talked about I didn’t completely understand like the btx form factor, or the nlx. Overall I learned quite a bit on this video, I’m pretty sure I could take a computer apart and build a new one ground up. Now knowing all the names only add to the tech name of everything. The teachings in this video would help more and be more effective if, it was hands on rather than just someone talking. While buying the motherboards you want to...

Unit 5 Assignment 1 Video

...Unit 5 Assignment 1: Video Summary NT1110 There are two major manufactures we use in today’s market which are Intel and AMD. There are some minor competitions but don’t stay on the market for long. The system bus for the CPU is also known as the Front-side bus as it inserts the CPU and has a 64 bit data pass. In the CPU theirs a controller that controls communication between the motherboard and other components with the CPU. The ALU is responsible for performing complex calculations. Communications between the controllers and the ALU’s uses a 32 bit wide internal data bus. A processor is usually measured in GHz. A system Bus is usually measured in MHz and has limiting factors of speed. The multiplier is the ratio between processor and the System bus. The system bus speed x multiplier equals the processor speed. CPU manufactures have come up with different ways to make the CPU work faster. Two multi-processing requires multiple processors (In other words your system must be designed to support more than one CPU on a single motherboard). Dual Core Processors have been recently developed, that means incorporating multiple processors with multiple ALU’s inside a CPU. These ALU’s process their information individually. There’s two cache memory’s which are SRAM and DRAM. SRAM is also called Static RAM, it is faster and more expensive then DRAM, it holds memory without being refreshed and DRAM must be refreshed. There are three types of RAM which are L1 cache, L2 cache, and L3 cache...
