Simple Interest
Unit 4: Instructor Graded Assignment

In these questions, you will need to use the date that unit 4 starts for your class.
List the date that Unit 4 started for your class:

* Unit 4 start date: May 7, 2014

Question 1
1. You decide to take out a simple interest loan for $5000, at 7% yearly interest on the date that unit 4 starts for you. If you repay the loan on December 31st (at the end of the current year)...

a) How much do you pay total when you pay off the loan?

R= 7% =0.07
T= 238/365 = 0.65

A= P (1 + rt)
A = 5,000 (1 + (0.07 X 0.65) )
A= 5,000 X 1.0455
A= $5,227.50

b) How much interest do you pay?

Amount Accured – Principal = Interest
5,227.50 – 5,000 = $227.50 or I = PRT
I = 5,000 X 0.07 X 0.65
I = $227.50

Question 2
2. You decide to take out a $20,000 simple interest loan at 4%, on the date unit 4 started for you.

a) In 45 days you decide to pay off $8000 of the loan. What is your new principal? Explain how you got the answer.

I = PRT
I = 20,000 X 0.04 X (45/365)
I = 20,000 X 0.00493
I = $98.63

Payment = Principal – Interest
$ 7,901.37 = 8,000 – 98.63

New Balance = Previous Balance – Principal payment
$12, 098.63 = 20,000 – 7,901.37

To get the new principal, I need to go get the interest and the payment to get the new balance.

b) 30 days after the first payment, you pay another $6000. What is your new principal? Explain how you got the answer you did.
I=PRT
I= 12,098.63 X 0.04 X 0.08219
I= 12,098.63 X 0.00329
I= 39.78

Payment = Principal – Interest
$12,058.85 = 12,098.63 – 39.78

New Balance = Previous Balance – Principal payment
$6,058.85 = 12,058.85 – 6,000

Like in letter A, I went to find the interest first to come up with the new principal.

c) 45 days after the 2nd payment, your loan comes due. How much do you need to pay then? Explain your reasoning.
A= P (1 + rt)
A= 6,058.85 (1 + (0.07 X 45/365))
A= 6,058.85 X 1.0086
A= $6,111.14

Question 3
3. You need $400 badly, and decide to write a check at a check cashing place to get that money. Assuming you much write the check for $500 to get the $400 in cash, and the check will be cashed in 2 weeks, what simple interest rate did you just pay? Assume 52 weeks in a year for this problem

A= P ( 1 + rt)
$500 = $400 (1+ ? 1/26)

R= (A/P- 1 ) /t
R= (500/400 -1) /(1/26)
R= 6.5 or 650%

Essay
4. Same as cash deals are becoming very popular these days. Research a couple same as cash deals and write an essay explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each. When would one of these deals be a good deal for a person? When would using a same as cash deal be a poor idea?

Same as cash deals seems very attractive for buyers because of its benefits and, the no interest it offers for a certain period. It is usually offered in retail store, like Best Buy. Customer is attractive to it because of 0 APR and one can make a minumun payment without paying any penalties as long it’s in its promotional period. But the catch is if the customer don’t pay the whole balance within the promotional period, a high interest rate will be added to the prinicipal balance. To avoid such interest, the customer should pay its balance before the offers end.

Offers can be within 90 days, 6 months, a year or two years. It all depends on the price and product you’ve purchase. I remember purchasing something from Best Buy and they offered me the six month period to pay it all off without interest. But after six month they did add up a high interest rate. Lucky I paid it all off before it accumulate such interest.

The advantages is it does give you a leeway to pay for the product you’ve purchased. The disadvantages the high interest after the promotional period.

Effective Learning Techniques

...Improving Students’ Learning With Effective Learning Techniques: Promising Directions From Cognitive and Educational Psychology Many students are being left behind by an educational system that some people believe is in crisis. Improving educational outcomes will require efforts on many fronts, but a central premise of this monograph is that one part of a solution involves helping students to better regulate their learning through the use of effective learning techniques. Fortunately, cognitive and educational psychologists have been developing and evaluating easy-to-use learning techniques that could help students achieve their learning goals. In this monograph, we discuss 10 learning techniques in detail and offer recommendations about their relative utility. We selected techniques that were expected to be relatively easy to use and hence could be adopted by many students. Also, some techniques (e.g., highlighting and rereading) were selected because students report relying heavily on them, which makes it especially important to examine how well they work. The techniques include elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, summarization, highlighting (or underlining), the keyword mnemonic, imagery use for text learning, rereading, practice testing, distributed practice, and interleaved practice.   To offer recommendations about the relative utility of these techniques, we evaluated whether their benefits generalize across four categories of variables: learning...

...PSYCHOLOGY and your life chapter 1 introduction to ps ychology 2 chapter outline A Gift of Life It was every subway rider’s nightmare, times two. Who has ridden along New York’s 656 miles of subway lines and not wondered: “What if I fell to the tracks as a train came in? What would I do?” And who has not thought: “What if someone else fell? Would I jump to the rescue?” Wesley Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker and navy veteran, faced both those questions in a flashing instant yesterday and got his answers almost as quickly. Mr. Autrey was waiting for the downtown local at 137th Street and Broadway in Manhattan around 12:45 p.m. He was taking his two daughters, Syshe, 4, and Shuqui, 6, home before work. Nearby, a man collapsed, his body convulsing. Mr. Autrey and two women rushed to help, he said. The man, Cameron Hollopeter, 20, managed to get up, but then stumbled to the platform edge and fell to the tracks, between the two rails. The headlights of the No. 1 train appeared. “I had to make a split decision,” Mr. Autrey said. So he made one, and leapt. Mr. Autrey lay on Mr. Hollopeter, his heart pounding, pressing him down in a space roughly a foot deep. The train’s brakes screeched, but it could not stop in time. Five cars rolled overhead before the train stopped, the cars passing inches from his head, smudging his blue knit cap with grease. Mr. Autrey heard onlookers’ screams. “We’re O.K. down here,” he yelled, “but I’ve got two daughters up there...

...2014-2015 People’s Guide to HEALTH, WELFARE AND OTHER SERVICES SACRAMENTO COUNTY $ ? Introduction The People’s Guide is a practical self-advocacy information guide and directory on how to get food, income, jobs and training, housing, health and dental care, legal advice, and other important help from local, state and federal programs and community services in Sacramento County. We don’t need to tell you these are hard times! Foreclosures, high unemployment, homelessness on the rise and the city, county, state and federal budgets either eliminating or making deep cuts to most of the programs talked about in this guide. These cuts mean less help for lowincome individuals, families, seniors and homeless people to access the these life-saving programs. It means reduced benefits, fewer workers, tighter eligibility rules, long lines and longer waits. not only is a self-advocacy guide to these programs, but also gives you advice on what you can do if your are treated unfairly or do not receive what you are entitled to by law. The guide is dedicated to helping all people overcome barriers when they are trying to get help. Politicians often use the money for other things than education, health, welfare and social services. But, when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, the gap has very bad effects on our entire society. You can help close that gap. You do not need to read the entire book; just find the topic in the table of contents. But, remember, that if you are eligible...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant, profound, full of feeling and brimming with insights.” —SHERI FINK, M.D., author of War Hospital “Brilliant, illuminating, empowering! Quiet gives not only a voice, but a path to homecoming for so many who’ve walked through the better part of their lives thinking the way they engage with the world is something in need of fixing.” 5/929 —JONATHAN FIELDS, author of Uncertainty:...

Introduction to Psychology

...TPS 101: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY TPS 101 serves as the beginning course in psychology; as such, it is broad in scope. The course will introduce students to the history of psychology, and current paradigms and theories. We will cover neuroscience, sensation, perception, memory, and language, stress and health psychology, personality and social psychology, intelligence, and developmental psychology. Because of time limitations, none of these topics can be covered in great depth. The reference textbooks and the material presented in class will serve as the primary sources for the material to be covered. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness. It is largely concerned with humans, although the behaviour and mental processes of animals can also be part of psychology research, either as a subject in its own right (e.g. animal cognition and ethnology), or somewhat more controversially, as a way of gaining an insight into human psychology by means of comparison (including comparative psychology). Origins of the psychology Near the end of 19th century things started drawing together. Questions raised by philosophers were being...
