...Vigilantes in Modern Cinema: Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver The focus of this paper will be the vague distinctions presented between the criminal and the vigilante through an examination and comparison of the films Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver. The inquiry will be concentrated on a character analysis of the Dirty Harry's protagonist, Harry Callahan, antagonist, Scorpio, and Taxi Driver's (anti)hero Travis Bickle. These three characters will be reviewed in their relationship to violence, justice, and purpose. To start, I must admit that the film Dirty Harry struck me as terribly unrealistic. Harry Callahan and Scorpio appeared so absurd simply because they were so incredibly unambiguous, a quality that made the film smack of propaganda. The production crew of Dirty Harry did almost all the thinking for the viewer. At no point in the film would any rational viewer have condoned the actions of Scorpio or condemned Dirty Harry for doing his utmost to stop this incredibly perverse criminal. This was an exceedingly underhanded ploy that exploited the viewer's sense of righteous indignation by concocting exceptional situations where any abuse of jurisprudence could be easily pardoned by the spectator. After recognizing the very obvious fact that Scorpio is the archetypal “bad-guy” one cannot help but notice his doubtful persona. First he kills a woman swimming on a roof-top pool, why? Perhaps she was wealthy, he was making a political statement. Only Harry discovers his note...

...New Health Medical Systems Shari Gifford HRM/548 Jennifer Familant March 10, 2014 New Health Medical Systems TO: New Health Medical Systems, Board of Directors FROM: Shari Gifford, HR Consultant CC: Jennifer Familant DATE: March 10, 2014 SUBJECT: Staffing Strategy It is my understanding that you, the Board of Directors of New Health Medical Systems, recently announced a new strategic direction to become a regional center for critically ill patients. As a part of that strategy, New Health Medical Systems (NHMS) has opened a new cardiovascular unit where patients can receive care for heart attacks, strokes, and other types of cardiovascular diseases. NHMS was quickly able to recruit a quality physician to head the unit as well as additional professional staff, however finding qualified technicians have become much more difficult than originally anticipated. The problem does not seem to be so much in terms of the position being attractive to candidates, but rather a lack of skilled technicians in the immediate region. Most of the skilled technicians are already employed, and are not actively seeking jobs with other organizations. In order to fill the 35 technician positions, the director of staffing has created a new staffing strategy that includes the following: 1. Place advertisement in the local newspapers 2. Contact staffing agencies that specializes in placing technicians into health care facilities 3. Organize a job fair and invite local...

Mathew 5:44 2 Few tasks an person faces are more emotionally or mentally challenging than that of managing conflict. And yet, conflict is a fact of life in this world, so it’s crucial that all people learn how to manage it with an eye toward positive closure. Over the course of a lifetime, every eperson will have countless opportunities to work with others through relational, philosophical and methodological differences. On occasion those differences may lead to personal strife, and the person’s opponent may appear to be an enemy. At such times the words of Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount will take on added significance: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:44) What is Matthew...

...today decisions that we take in the company. Profit sharing: The employees determine the profit share that they should get and also decide how to split it. It creates the feeling of ownership, says semler. Employees enjoy 25 % of company’s total profit. It directly affects their efficiency. The way of working is different by the employees when they have a sense of ownership. Profit sharing give them a reason to do things better. They work more sincerely and with more effort. In this way employees themselves can decide that what they will get at the end of the year. Free flow of information: Each piece of information is available to everybody. Nothing is kept as secret. ...What is effective management? This will be one dimension that you will have to reflect on throughout the unit – some questions that might arise is there such a thing as ‘one best way’ of being effective? Does being effective require a set of skills, or is it more about being adaptable and flexible? Is it more effective to think of management as the sole locus of the manager, or as a group or ever organizational dynamic? Gender Equality/Balance – were more women just not choosing promotions? More complex than that – See Acker article on Moodle to help start thinking through these ideas! Administrative Management The influence on the workplace of the KIPPER phenomenon The KIPPER phenomenon is just one example of a social dynamic that can have an influence on the workplace (e.g. people having to stay in work longer and retire later in order to financial support adult children). At a more general level it highlights how different social or cultural trends always have an influence or organizational life. Definitions are always difficult I agree – and there are lots of definitions! A good place to start is think about the academic definition given to a term in a text book or, better still, an academic paper, and then think how this might translate into an organizational setting. The framework for the unit Broadly speaking, the unit starts off at an individual level and them moves towards ideas which are more group-based, then more organizational based. However, this...
