...Unit 45: Transport systems and the environment In this report I will be describing the different forms of impact that transport systems can have on the environment Air pollution This is one of the most obvious impact that transport systems can have on the environment. Many forms of transport rely on burning ‘unclean’ fuels such as petrol and diesel. Cars and buses are among the main culprits for polluting the environment. The emissions that these vehicles release can be potentially harmful to people’s health. A huge percentage of people living in busier cities such as London, Beijing and Los Angeles die or are seriously affected by diseases and complications that the high concentration of emissions cause. Noise Pollution Cars, buses, trains and planes when moving make noise. This is known as noise pollution. Many people choose not to live in busy cities because of the high level of noise pollution. Visual Intrusion As I have mentioned above, many people choose not to live near a busy road, in a city centre or near an airport because of the loud noise that is associated with these places because of the amount of traffic that goes through them. However it is not just the noise pollution that can be a factor. These places need to be lit up all day and all night so that drivers, pedestrians and pilots can see where they are going as the safety of these people is paramount. The problem with that is that people living near these sort of areas may find it hard to sleep at night...

...Effects of the California High School Exit Exam on Student Persistence, Achievement, and Graduation Sean F. Reardon Allison Atteberry Nicole Arshan Michal Kurlaender April, 2009 (full paper available at irepp.stanford.edu) Executive Summary Roughly half of the 50 U.S. states now require students to pass a high school exit exam in order to graduate from high school. These exam requirements are predicated on the belief that “raising the bar” for graduation will motivate low‐achieving students to work harder in school, motivate schools to improve their instruction for low‐achieving students, and provide employers with a clearer signal of high school graduates’ skills. Opponents of these requirements, however, argue that creating additional barriers to graduation discourages students—particularly academically and socially disadvantaged students—from persisting in school and hence leads to increased dropout rates and greater inequality of educational outcomes. Prior research has found somewhat mixed evidence regarding the effects of exit exam requirements, though the most rigorous studies suggest that the introduction of exit exam requirements leads to roughly a 2 percentage point decline in high school graduation rates. However, prior research has not examined closely the extent to which this effect results from students leaving school early or from students failing to pass the exam despite staying in school through 12th grade. In addition, prior research has not examined whether ...

...Heileman Brewing Company: Power Failure at PowerMaster Heileman wanted to use the new product, the Colt 45 PoweMaster, to expand its business and solve the financial problems, but the new product’s advertisement strategy stripped up a storm of controversy among minority advocated and alcohol foes. This is not only because the label and advertisements Heileman used imply the alcohol content of the new product, but also the main consumers the new product targeting are those who are inner-city, and lower-income blacks and this population group suffered disproportionately from alcohol-related disease. Eventually, in face of continuing protest from community and regulatory pressure, Heileman had to give up the paln to introduce its Colt 45 PowerMaster brand. Heileman was one of America’s oldest and most venerable brewing companies. However, in the mid-eighties, Heileman met some financial problems and even faced the crisis of bankruptcy. According to the research, Heileman marketing director found that higher alcohol content malt liquor category is where the consumer is going and low-income blacks are main consumers in this category. At this point, the company decided to focus on malt liquor segment, offer a higher alcohol content product called Colt 45 PowerMaster and primarily focus on the black, inner-city, and lower-income consumers. However, the market strategy of the new product was not as good as Heilemnet expected. In contrast, the strategy results in a lot of the controversies...

...Unit 45, Assignment 1 – Resources for Health and Social Care. Explain why resources are presented differently due to the type of media used. During this Report we will be looking at the different types of resources available for new learners in Health and social care. I will be reviewing four different types of resources I have researched. I will also explain why they are presented differently from one another and the different types of ways these resources can be presented by the media. Internet – The internet is easily accessible and used worldwide. It is a global network and you can find a wide range of information on any topic via the internet. You can gain access on to the internet by using a variety of different appliances; some of these include laptops, smart phones and tablets. The internet can be used by any audience. However, it can be extremely good for the younger generation who may be more up to date with technology and may find books boring. The resource (www.theguardian.com, so you want to work in Health and Social Care? by Katie Shimmon, 16/12/2006) was well presented, there were useful links that I could click on to gather more information regarding the subject. This article would be targeted at someone interested in working within the Health and Social care sector or someone who was already employed in the sector. The internet can be presented through the media by televised adverts, radio commercials or bill boards. The internet is presented differently...

Page 1 of 5 Return to article page This story was printed from LookSmart's FindArticles where you can search and read 3.5 million articles from over 700 publications. http://www.findarticles.com Loaded... ready... safe! Can your home-defense gun be loaded and quickly accessible, yet still be safe? Our handgun editor says "Yes!" and offers several proven strategies. Guns Magazine , Jan 1, 2002, by Massad Ayoob If you keep a gun in your home or workplace, it's only common sense that it be loaded and quickly accessible. The same common sense, however, also tells us the firearm should be inaccessible to children, incompetent adults and unlawful intruders. Having both at once is a tall order, but that doesn't make it impossible. Let's look at a broad spectrum of armed citizens and police officers in this country who have found that when it comes to this important matter -- you can have your cake and eat it too. In The Home John is a detective and gunfight winner who works for a large, West Coast jaw-enforcement agency that serves a very high-crime community. He has investigated a number of violent home invasions, many of which had tragically fatal results. Though most of these were "drug dealer invading and ripping off rival dealer" situations, a disturbing number involved innocent, law-abiding citizens who were helpless once their doors were kicked in. When John gets dressed for work in the...

...justification reports. The end of cycle paperwork is now completed in approximately half the time, with very few errors. Interstate 45 in Navarro County was placed under construction on 10/28/2015. The construction area was from mile marker 213 to mile marker 236 with significant crashes causing interstate blockage daily. There was a major increase in the number of crashes documented due to various issues within the construction area. After consulting with the area supervisor, I was authorized to develop a crash reduction plan for this section of highway. I identified issues within the construction zone and met with personnel from TxDOT, Texas Sterling, Webber and various other contractors to address the problem issues; to include: water drainage, tapers, extruders, speed limits, lane closures, and worker safety. A HEAT map and crash data was pulled. Day patrols were increased, a UCRP (Drone Unit) was strategically placed, surge operations and multiple laser task forces were conducted. In turn, major crashes were reduced, construction zone safety was increased, and traffic flow was improved; while teamwork and overall area morale were strengthened. During a declared disaster in Navarro County due to major flooding, I was selected to serve as the contact person for field operations. I advised the Chain of Command as it became necessary to close Interstate 45 due to Richland Creek flooding at the 220-milepost. I placed Troopers south of the creek due to the next crest. I informed...
