Introduction: * What do we mean by the term health? * What is a health campaign? * Why are they necessary? * What are their aims? * Do health promotions work? Give examples! * What are their strengths and weaknesses? What target groups are the most successful and why? * How do you look after your own health? * What are the different types of Health Needs? (Normative – what expert opinion based on research defines i.e. vaccinations, Expressed – needs which are demanded by groups or individuals, Comparative – this is when there may be a lack of services for one group of people in a particular area compared to another and Felt – this is what people really want or feel they need.)
Reasons for promoting health and well-being: * What area do you want to promote? * Why does this topic need to be promoted? * Are there any statistics on your chosen campaign? I.e. mortality statistics? Illnesses? * What is the current situation both locally and nationally in relation to your chosen campaign? * Are there any national/international targets based around your health promotion topic? * By asking professionals, family and friends, find out if they knew it was an issue? How long has it been an issue? Are there any repercussions for the professionals, government and local services? How does it affect individuals? How does it affect society? Do they worry? Have they changed their lifestyle in anyway? * Are there any government strategies in place for this campaign? How successful are they? Why? Are there any other organisations involved? (commercial and voluntary) * Is there any media related to this subject? (TV adverts, radio, leaflets) what are the effects?
Models and approaches to health promotion: * What are the different models and approaches used in health promotion? (medical, behaviour change, education, empowerment/client centred and social change) * Are particular models used for specific target groups? Topics? Scales of the promotion? Resources available? * What model will you use? And why? What are the advantages of this? * What media is used in health promotions? (Leaflets, posters, presentations? Advertisements in newspapers or on TV) * What media will you use and why? What are the advantages of doing this?
Planning and implementing a health promotion:
The stages for planning and implementing your small scale health promotion: 1) Identify your target group and gain knowledge about your chosen topic by using secondary research. 2) Set aims and objectives for your health promotion. Consider how you will evaluate progress and outcomes. 3) Choose a selection of appropriate health promotion models, media and message style. 4) Implement the promotion. 5) Analyse the evaluative data you have obtained during the promotion 6) Evaluate the outcomes, including in relation to the original aims and objectives and evaluate criteria.
Help with your evaluation: * How good were your presentation skills? * How successful were your resources? * Did you choose the right target group? * Did you use the right model? * Did you use the right media? * Did you achieve your aims? * Did you choose the right day to campaign? * Did you give yourself enough time to implement the promotion? * What were the outcomes of the campaign? * Were there any unintended outcomes? * What would you do differently? * How would you do it?
