...NEWER ANTIDIABETIC DRUGS A. Sundaram* , C. R. Anand Moses*, S. Ilango*, V. Seshiah** INTRODUCTION The basic defects in Type 2 diabetes consist of (1) Insulin deficiency (2) Insulin resistance and (3) increased hepatic glucose production (HGP) leading to glucotoxicity, beta cell exhaustion and finally beta cell failure. The treatment strategies to overcome these defects are: 1) Modified meal Plan 2) Exercise 3) Blood glucose lowering drugs and 4) Insulin The current oral blood glucose lowering agents and dietary measures only partially correct the multiple metabolic defects in NIDDM with insulin resistance remaining relatively impervious to treatment Hypoglycaemia and secondary failure are common with presently available sulphonylureas and hence the need for newer blood glucose lowering drugs. In case of NIDDM, a successful new drug should correct atleast one of the major underlying metabolic disturbances. i.e. reduce insulin resistance, enhance insulin production and secretion in response to glucose, suppress exessive hepatic glucose production or improve glucose uptake and utilisation in peripheral tissues particularly, skeletal muscle. Within the last few years three new groups of drugs have been identified and they are: a) Alpha glucosidase inhibitors, eg. Acarbose b) Insulin Sensitizer, eg. Troglitazone. c) Insulin secretoguogues, eg. Glimepiride and Repaglinide The following review will discuss each of these groups of drugs in detail. ALPHA-GLUCOSIDASE INHIBITORS In human...

...IT302-Unit4- Kaplan University Part 1: Dashboard Design. For the dashboard that I anticipated is required to meet the needs of the task that I discussed in Unit 3, I believe that the best approaches are either a Semantic Network or the use of Scenarios, Flowcharts and Cognitive walkthroughs, and more specifically Scenarios. Although this may be the most productive approach, it is likely that in the process of creating the dashboard that parts of a number of the conceptual designs could contribute to the finished product. While the Semantic Network is comprised of elements that would be useful and productive, particularly by providing ease in exploring the problem space and graphical views, it does not offer us all the information that would be constructive. To accomplish that, I believe the use of Scenarios, Flowcharts and Cognitive walkthroughs would provide us with the most useful means to develop a dashboard adequate to provide the functionality we are seeking. Of these, the use of Scenarios would provide the easiest means to develop a dashboard with the desired functionality initially along with the ability to modify easily as required to accomplish what is needed. By creating scenarios and including them in the early development of the dashboard we will provide ourselves with a means to develop a versatile form that can be easily amended as needed to provide a finished console that provides the full functionality that...

The poverty he experienced while growing up taught him the value of money and to persevere. After attending the University of Missouri, he immediately worked for J.C. Penny where he got his first taste of retailing. He served in World War II, after which he became a successful franchiser of Ben Franklin five-and-dime stores. In 1962, he had the idea of opening bigger stores, sticking to rural areas, keeping costs low and discounting heavily. The management disagreed with his vision. Undaunted, Walton pursued his vision, founded Wal-Mart and started a retailing success story. When Walton died in 1992, the family's net worth approached $25 billion. Today, Wal-Mart is the world's #1 retailer, with more than 4,150 stores, including discount stores, combination discount and grocery stores, and membership-only warehouse stores (Sam's Club). Learn Walton's winning formula for business. Rule 1: Commit to your business. Believe in it more than anybody else. I think I overcame every single one of my personal shortcomings by the sheer passion I brought to my work. I don't know if you're born with this kind of passion, or if you can learn it. But I do know you need it. If...

Together biological and humanistic approaches are naturally exercise as under tones. Personality by itself involves various issues. Evolutionary/inherent perception do not usually account for the biological mechanisms among genes and personality. Theorists use biological development in an effort to fill in the space among personality and genetics by inferring, theorizing, and exploring biological associations with behavior. ...SMOKING AND THE EFFECT ON THE BODY I never understood the concept of wanting to smoke and after researching this I understand less, why smoking appeals to a person. The risk is higher than the benefits and I can’t seem to understand what people find in it that makes them want to continue smoking. My mother was a smoker and had high blood pressure, heart disease and bronchitis. After researching this, I found out that most of it could have been prevent if she did not smoke. The chemicals used to produce them have been researched and are the cause for many of the disease and the effects it has on your body. Some people think smoking will keep them from gaining weight or that it keeps them calm but after researching this I think I could find a better way. Research has found that there are over 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes which are harmful to the human body. The effects range from circulatory issues to immune issues. The research will validate the effects, of the type of chemicals used in the production of cigarettes and the effect that it has on the human body. The articles that I read validated that the chemicals use do cause harm to the body. Smoking is the gamble we take of getting illnesses, such as cancer or heart disease Smoking affects the circulatory system, heart, and other organs. Cigarettes harms your circulatory system by raising your blood pressure, less oxygen carried by the blood and damages the lining of the arteries ,to name a few . The chemical in...

The Long Road Home In New Orleans, families struggle to return to normal one year after Hurricane Katrina. © Weekly Reader Publishing, Teen Newsweek, 2006 Chakia Boutte, 12, surveys what she has lost in the year since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. The playground where she once spent afternoons is closed. Her block is full of stormwrecked homes, many abandoned. A pile of charred debris sits in front of what used to be Chakia’s house. The home was looted and burned after her family evacuated in a rescue boat. “I cried when I saw my house,” she says, remembering the first time she returned home after the storm. “[Looters] took everything, even my jar of pennies.” Chakia and her cousin Mikia Kirton, 8, have lived in Houston since the storm forced their families to move. The girls dreaded returning to school this fall. They say other kids sometimes make fun of them. “They say, ‘You used to have a home, now you live in the Astrodome,’” says Mikia. After Hurricane Katrina, thousands of evacuees had to take shelter at the Houston Astrodome. After spending time in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, Toye Domino is happy to be starting fifth grade in New Orleans. “We had to travel halfway around the country to get back here,” says Toye, 10. “I want to stay here because it’s my hometown.” For kids in New Orleans, the start of school is a...
