...Parrot Heads Unite! Jimmy Buffett fans around the world refer to themselves as “Parrot Heads”. These fans are considered and/or represent one of the most dedicated fan bases anywhere. These Parrot Heads were coined this nickname by a member of the rock group Eagles. This nickname came about in 1985 and has been referenced with this group of fans ever since. Jimmy Buffett himself sings of his fan base that he and Parrot Heads are “the people our parents warned us about”, and they are a self-proclaimed nerd group. But at the same time, these die-hard Buffett fans often fantasize of being in a make believe, almost mythical land where reality kind of fades away and they can be themselves. All of this has lead to the Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc., a small club that started in 1989 and has grown to clubs all over the world numbering the thousands. It has literally become the name brand for the Jimmy Buffett fans and Jimmy Buffett himself. This “brand” has Buffett selling his fans the chance to temporarily escape into the land of fun and make believe. ...Our society often uses sex and gender interchangeably, but an important distinction needs to be made between these two terms. In biology, organisms are classified as either female or male based on their reproductive organs, chromosomes, and hormones. While sex is anatomically based, gender is more complex. It is a social construct encompassing the attributes and behaviors that society deems appropriate for that gender. Social norms in the Unites Stares reflect a gender binary, hence there are cultural expectations for women and a different set for men. These expectations are taught and the sometimes subtle, often overt lessons begin at a very young age. It starts with the color of the blanket a baby is wrapped up in, the toys bought for...

...Substance abuse in the Unites States has changed constantly. In addition it has caused significant public health problem affecting society on numerous levels. Families as well as communities are affected by substance abuse. In this paper I will examine the past and current trends of substance abuse, and how the use of illicit drugs may be considered culturally appropriate. In the mid 1800’s Opium began to arrive as Chinese workers immigrated to the United States to work on the railroads and gold mines. By the late 1800s, opium was quite a popular drug. Before long, opium dens had spread throughout the United States. In 1803, the German scientist Friedrich Sertürner successfully isolated morphine from opium for the purpose of using it as a surgical and post-surgical anesthetic soon making it available to physicians in the United States. It did alleviate pain, but in the process it also left the user in an anesthetized and euphoric state. The benefits of morphine were considered amazing to physicians of the era. But, the addictive properties were not discovered until after the Civil War. “In 1895, Heinrich Dreser, working for the Bayer Company in Germany, synthesized heroin. Bayer began to market the drug in 1898 (Brecher, 1972)”. In 1600 settlers introduced cannabis to Jamestown Virginia at the time it was used for its fiber. That was used to make rope, sails, and clothing. From 1611 until after the Civil War, cannabis was the main crop in North America playing a...

...Sandwich Blitz Unit 6 According to the four step control process, the first step would be to set performance standards. In this scenario Lei would first need to update the employee handbook. Updating the handbook would clearly set new employee standards. Lei would also need to make it mandated that every manager review the new updated version with their staff. Measuring performance is the next step. With this process Lei would need to sit down with the management team and conduct an evaluation on the employees. This would allow them to see who was upholding the rules and regulations in the handbook. This will lead to areas of opportunity and also areas of correction. Buy measuring the performance level this would give the team the ability to give recognition to those that deserve it. Step three is comparing the performance, this step will be challenging for the team. The team will need to evaluate the performance of the employees before the updated handbook. This will give the management team the ability to discuss what further changes need to be made. Also in the evaluation they will be able to evaluate the employees that did not need to make an adjustment with-in the new handbook. Step four is to take action to correct problems and reinforce successes. In my opinion this is the last and most critical step. The individual incorrectly imputed wrong working time, or time that they did not work. This can be handled in a number of ways. They can have the employee make...

...The economics profession’s jargon serves a variety of purposes. For example, their common terminology serves to make for more precise communication. It allows ideas to be communicated clearly and exactly. This exactness and clarity of terminology serves society by allowing economists to discuss economics with each other and with society with clarity so that other economists have a better understanding of what an economist is saying. A common terminology also serves to divide insiders from outsiders. For outsiders, for example economic students, who do not have a clue what these terms mean, economists’ terminology is exclusionary. It makes economists the gatekeepers of economic ideas. Economists’ terminology serves as a barrier to entry, restricting the supply of economists, and increasing the value of the services provided by existing economists. Which of these two reasons is the strongest? To answer that question let us consider two examples given by Amanda Bennett, the author of The Wall Street Journal article, “Economists + Meeting = A Zillion Causes and Effects” [The Wall Street Journal, January 10, 1995]. The two examples are the concepts of externality and utility, Why do economists use these terms? Based on her article, and on my classroom experience, I would judge that, of the two reasons, the self-serving reason is the stronger. Essentially, economists create their terminology primarily to make life difficult for students. Consider the first example: externality. Why...

...Assess the view that the urban working class was treated worse by the Communists than the Tsars during the period 1855-1964. Throughout the period 1855-1964 there would be continuity for the urban working class in the treatment by their rulers. The urban working class was treated badly by both Tsars and Communists. Although there was continuity there was considerable variation in experience, the legalisation of Trade Unions in 1905 would give the workers some limited political power, the destruction in the First and Second World Wars would have a detrimental effect on living standards and working conditions of urban workers, workers would enjoy considerably improved living standards throughout the Communist period, something never achieved under the Tsars. The Tsars treated the urban working class worse than the Communists. Throughout the period the working conditions of the urban workers would be consistently bleak. Both Tsarist and Communist rulers would make attempts to improve conditions but it is clear that the communists were much more successful than the Tsars. During the Witte era an factory inspectorate was established child labour was banned however these improvements were limited and beating and on the spot dismissal were common in factories throughout the Tsarist period. Factory beatings became not common under the Lenin and Khrushchev would relax factory disciplines and end force labour during the de-Stalinization. Unlike the Tsars the...

...The United States flag is a symbol which represents the country that we are today. The flag is a symbol of respect which holds true to many of the citizens who have fought for lived and died for the freedoms that we have today. These freedoms are not granted to any other countries in the world. Therefore, the importance and responsibility of keeping it properly folded and safe is a huge honor and should not be taken lightly. The folds in the flag each have a special meaning and are not to be rushed through as to forget what each of the meanings stand for. The United States Flag has been a part of history since January 1, 1776. American history has set fourth a legend that Betsy Ross was the seamstress who sewed the first American flag. Betsy Ross knew George Washington and had done some repair seamstress work for him. Betsy Ross ran an upholstery shop that she took over when her husband had passed away. She often mended some of Washington’s clothing which how they became friends. Many people have different stories and legends of how the flag came about and why and if Ross was in fact the first person to sew the flag. There has never been any documentation that proved that Ross did create the flag however legend says that one day George Washington and two of his key figures sketched out the United States flag and asked Betsy Ross to sew it together and she did. No one knows for sure whether Betsy Ross designed the flag or if she did in fact change the original six stars to five...

...INTRODUCTION Background of the Case Study of the UNITES STATES POSTAL SERVICE The evolution of the United States Postal Service is interlaced with the history of our federal government. Today, the Postal Service is the second largest civilian employer in the United States. It has over 700,000 employees, affects an economy that employs 9 million people and represents 8% of the United States gross domestic product in a $900 billion mailing industry (United States Postal Service [USPS], 2002b). This organization reaches every United States household and its operations are often perceived as an indication of the efficiency of the entire federal government as a whole. After the historic gridlock of the Chicago Post Office in 1966, Postmaster General Lawrence O’Brien sought the political support of President Johnson for systemic change in the organization. President Johnson formed a “blue ribbon” commission of well-known business leaders and academia’s to study the Post Office Department. Their mission was to recommend how to change the Post Office Department and to also describe the best governmental organization model for its function. The President’s Commission on Postal Organization (Commonly called the Kappel Commission after its Chairman) presented the President with a plan in 1968, which lead to congressional testimony, but legislative action did not soon follow. Various factions, including the strong postal unions representing 740,000 votes, opposed the government corporation...

...The United States health care system has been controlled by various groups over the years. At one point physicians were known to have controlled the health care system. Their homes were once considered the hospitals in which patients would stay over if needed (Laureate Education Inc., 2008). Over time the control of the health care system transitioned to hospitals. Their role was to become service organizations and offer a continuum of care in the health system (Barton, 2010). Today the health care system is controlled by financing. Financing includes any private plan, employer sponsored, direct purchase, any government plan, Medicare, Medicaid, and military health insurance (Barton, 2010). Financing is considered to control all aspects of health care including physicians being reimbursed for services, hospitals inpatient/outpatients revenue, nursing homes, medical services being provided with and without technology, and prescription drugs. Over the years health insurance has changed. In the last half of the twentieth century, health insurance became the dominant payment mechanism for health services (Barton, 2010). The number of individuals with health insurance dramatically jumped after World War II as well as the spending for health care services (Shi & Singh, 2008). In 1965 Medicare and Medicaid were two government-supported programs initiated as amendments to the Social Security Act (Barton, 2010, p. 55). These programs were developed following the failure to enact some...

...Thesis: Canada's criminal justice system, specifically laws dealing with punishment, is far superior to that of the United States Canada and the United States of America are two neighboring countries who besides the border share numerous other key aspects. Though similar in beliefs and culture the two countries are far from alike. Their legal structure particularly the penal system is one of most significant boundaries between Canada and the United States. Though not perfect, it's absolutely clear that Canada has the far more superior legal system. Unlike the United States, Canada no longer practices capital punishment which is barbaric to say the least. Furthermore Canada's belief in conjunctive punishment is better with dealing with offenders than America's consecutive punishment. Finally Canada's goal to concentrate more on rehabilitating and educating criminals is far more effective and efficient in eradicating future crime then just incarcerating them. There are two main types of law, Substantive and Procedural. Substantive law creates, defines and regulates rights and obligations of citizens; in contrast procedural law prescribes the manner to enforce rights and obligations. (Dickson) Substantive law divides into Public law which in turn breaks up into four other laws including criminal law. Criminal law outlines all the acts that are regarded as offences to society and it consists of the penal system. The penal system is comprised of sets of punishments and sentences...

...How far was Saladin able to unite the Muslim world from 1174 to 1187? The battle of Montgisard * In 1177 the Crusader kingdom was facing the prospect of a succession crisis. King Baldwin IV was a leper and could not leave an heir. His sister Sibylla had been left widowed and pregnant by William of Montferrat, and the nobles of the kingdom began to seek another suitable husband. At the same time, Philip of Alsace, Count of Flanders, arrived on pilgrimage, and demanded that Sibylla be married off to one of his vassals. Philip and Baldwin also planned an alliance with the Byzantine Empire for a naval attack on Egypt; but none of these plans came to fruition. * Meanwhile, Saladin planned his own invasion of the kingdom from Egypt. Learning of Saladin's plans, Baldwin IV left Jerusalem with, according to William of Tyre, only 375 knights to attempt a defense at Ascalon, but Baldwin was blockaded there by Saladin, who, again according to William of Tyre, had 26,000 men. Accompanying Baldwin was Raynald of Chatillon, lord of Oultrejordain, who had just been released from captivity in Aleppo in 1176. Raynald was a fierce enemy of Saladin, and was the effective commander of the army, with King Baldwin too ill to command it personally. Also with the army were Odo de St Amand, master of the Knights Templar, Baldwin of Ibelin, his brother Balian, Reginald of Sidon, and Joscelin III of Edessa. Another Templar force attempted to meet Baldwin at Ascalon, but they were also besieged...
