The key to getting a college diploma is to be a prepared college student. There are many variables to consider when contrasting a prepared college student to an unprepared college student. To begin with, a prepared student will not only have the determination to succeed in school, but also be prepared with the tools they need to do so. Whereas an unprepared student will either forget or find that bringing such materials is not vital, making the task of taking notes obsolete. Unlike the unprepared student, the prepared student can take notes and study the information given during the lecture. In comparing the prepared student to the unprepared student, we can take a lucky guess that the prepared student will tend to be the organized one. The

Student Dropouts

...Composition 1 What causes so many U.S. First-year students to drop or flunk out during their first year of College? The latest generation of teens and high school graduates are the most useless, and sheltered collection of kids so far. Having been bred and raised to be significantly impaired in all aspects of life, they are quickly crushed by medium-harsh reality. Let us examine the trends. To start, there is an alarming trend with parents to closely protect their children from any reality. This may be caused by guilt over working, and has certainly been influenced by the media scare-tactics over pedophiles, terrorism, etc. The term “helicopter parents” has entered the common vocabulary to describe these parents. As a result, when teens are sent to college, they are singularly unprepared for independence. Entitlement also has a large affect. New students are not prepared to be judged by merits, having been passed through public school with little effort. The first hint of judgment and failure can be devastating, and will send them scurrying back home to their protected umbrellas. Lastly, many students are unprepared for the deluge of drugs and alcohol they will encounter. Teens are not being trained in the imbibing arts, and can quickly run into horrible issues involving sex, drugs, partying, and inhibitions. Trying to balance a 15 hour course load with a $1500 per month meth habit is not for the sheltered and stupid. Eighteen years of blurred indifference is...

Unrealism In School

...buildings across the country, some ready and eager to learn, and many not. They attend classes which promote unrealistic ideals which the students are expected to meet and also leave children ill-prepared for life outside of high school. For many students, this means that, if they chose to attend college, they are not prepared for the classes and many will not graduate on time, if at all. This is in part due to the unrealistic subjects and content taught to them in high school. This may take the forms of anything from complicated math concepts which are not applicable to everyday life, to writing skills which will not be used in college...

Lets Get Practical

...Lets Get Practical In today’s graduating high school class everyone thinks the same. They are required to do just about everything the same. Students are not taught to think outside the box. By the time they leave high school they are not an individual yet. Yes, they can write a paper but it isn't their own thought. Yes they can spend money, but do they know how to manage and save it. Because of the lack of outside world knowledge, high school should shift to a more practical and individualized curriculum. It would benefit the high school students to learn more practical things because, they need to learn the everyday tasks that are required as adults. When students graduate, most if not all do not know how to balance a checkbook, manage a bank account, or even know how to budget. They need to be taught how to resit the never ending urge to buy something they know they do not need. A money management class will teach them how to be responsible with their money and teach them the benefits of saving. If I had of learned these tools while in high school, I would most likely have a car and my license by mid summer. But because I lack in these traits I will have to save and wait until next march to drive. If they are taught these things they will not have to face the burden of feeling and being unprepared for life. By teaching them time management there would be fewer mistakes made. They would have the proper time to be able to process their thoughts, and write them down for...

Curriculum Philosophy Paper

...Curriculum Philosophy Paper Patrice Bax HRWD 6713: Curriculum Design Submitted: October 6, 2012 In mathematics, there is a rule called the order of operations which instructs a student to solve certain steps first, before calculating others steps to arrive at an accurate solution to a mathematical expression. Similarly, society teaches an order of operations to life in that students are to first, matriculate through secondary education to attain foundational skills in support of man’s progression in society; second, enter into college to gain skills and knowledge to prepare for survival in society; third, graduate from college with specific jobs skills and credentials to give meaning to society; and finally, contribute to the functioning and betterment of society by successfully entering and succeeding in the workforce. Unfortunately, society is facing a detrimental problem that may signify a defect in this order of operation, because graduates are unprepared and lack the skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce. The basis of this paper is to provide clarity to the problem of unprepared graduates entering the workforce, and suggest a viable solution by offering that simulated education curriculum rooted in Social Efficiency Ideology is a practical response to the issue. Clarity of the Problem U.S. Chamber of Commerce (2012) recognizes that the toughest competition in business is the global race for talent. Plumer...

My Gpa Personal Narrative

...My GPA can be explained simply with by saying I was immature, made a lot of poor choices and experienced many unfortunate events but most importantly my GPA says I didn’t quit. Prior to entering college I was in an almost fatal car accident which left me both in recovery as well as extremely unprepared to begin college by the fall semester. Yet at the pressures of family, friends, and High School faculty I found myself in the classroom of Bloomfield College Fall of 2011. To be completely honest with you, I hated it! ALL of it! And it showed in my work. It was only after visiting one of my friends at William Paterson University that I felt like I found my home but transferring proved to be a harder feat than I expected. While in the paperwork process I was deserted by my mother who disappeared for months due to her drug addiction. Thankfully with the help of my financial aid counselor I was able to obtain independent student status and attend school the following semester. I was happy, I was eager, and I was very much so unprepared. I was enthralled by the glitz and the glamour of the college dorms, the activities, and the social life I often chose the party over the library often times than not. While financial demands of living on my own with no continuous help forced me...

Who Should We Blame?

..."U.S students are mediocre academically. That's not pleasant to acknowledge, but it's been documented in international competitions for years. To cite but one example, thirty-four nations participated in the 1999 Trends in International Math and Science study(TIMSS) competitions. U.S students scored nineteenth in math, behind Singapore, Korea, Japan, Canada, and even behind Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Latvia. And they did only slightly better in science, scoring eighteenth. The problem is not confined to math and science. The deficiencies of U.S students in Geography and English-- their native language!--are legendary. What could cause such embarrassing deficiencies?"(P.147 Ruggiero). Research Paper

...Hypothesis: Are Students more or less likely to cheat when given the opportunity to? Morality question. I believe that yes If given the opportunity to cheat and to get away with it most students are more likely to cheat than not to. Your Opinion: Its a fact that students feel the pressure to make good grades. In a situation in which the student is unprepared for an exam, he/she may cheat in an effort to keep from receiving a grade for which his/her parent will scold or punish the child. I also believe social pressure or pressure in any form causes people to have an inclination to cheat. Pre-Test: In order to really test out this theory I decided to take a visit out to my old college campus. The university of Orono at Maine and take a visit to a class which was having an exam. I sat in on the class and acting as if i was a student to really test out the theory of whether or not students would be more inclined to cheat or not given the opportunity. But before I had even gone out to the actual class itself I decided to post a status on the Umaine Facebook page to see what peoples opinions were. Of course you had your generic responses such as Cheating is morally wrong. Or the responses such as its taking the easy way out and it is not fair for the fellow students were most of the responses that I have gotten. So with taking the responses on Facebook and keeping that in mind I decided to test out the theory myself. Reason For Research: Cheating is a primordial inclination...

Student Dropout Problems in College

...Various causes contribute to the student dropout problem in colleges. One of the top reasons for leaving college is that it is hard to have to support oneself and go to school at the same time. Balancing work and school is a bigger barrier than finding money for tuition for many. In fact, more than a third of the dropouts said that even if they got a grant that covered their books and tuition, it would be hard to go back to school, given their work and family commitments (Lewin, 2009). For many, the financial burdens of college are too overwhelming. Often students will plan the finances for only the first year or the first semester, but they will not look ahead at how they will be paying for the rest. Some students are fortunate, however to have family that can help with their tuition, but that is not the case for all. Only one in five of the students who enroll in two-year institutions graduate within three years. And even at four-year colleges, only two in five complete their degrees within six years. (Lewin, 2009). With government funding dropping, colleges rely largely on higher student tuitions. According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2013–2014 school years was $30,094 at private colleges, $8,893 for state residents at public colleges, and $22,203 for out-of-state residents. (College Data, 2014). However, college administrators estimate that almost a third of all college students drop out of school sometime during their...

Journal Response

...touches on several specific points throughout her report, some which include how college students struggle to maintain not only their grades but their home and child together. Bader writes about a twenty two year old battered woman who is trying to survive in a community who is not giving her much help or opportunity to go to college. However Aesha finds a way to escape her abuser and spends thirty days alongside her son in a temporary shelter. Afterwards she is place in EAU emergency assistance unit which was not a very comfortable place, all this while trying to finish her associate’s degree. You can easily see how Bader uses specific details in people’s life she is writing about. Bader not only notes by quoting the people who say the need of statistics to prove the astonishing number of homeless college students. She also utilizes real names and ages of real people, so the reader can feel and see the reality. Bader continues to focus on the lack of programs of day care that are out there for people who are homeless and with kids. She uses quotes that clearly show how unprepared this country is when it comes to homeless students she strategically inputs the following quote “As far as I know, no college has ever asked for help in reaching homeless students,” Another way Bader could have made her point a bit more explicit is by writing her experience as a professor and having to deal with a lot of students whose home situation is affecting their schoolwork. As a professor that took...
