In the article Unstained Shirt, Stained Character: Anse Bundren Reread by Rita Rippetoe, Rita argues that Anse (from the novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner) is actually a “master manipulator” and “When he needs charity he `mumbles his mouth,' but when he needs community respect and support, his rhetoric shows imagination, forethought and a ruthless will.” (Howe 5). Rippetoe then develops her conjecture with details pertaining to Anse’s current characterization as well as what may have caused him to become the man he is today (lazy, selfish, and useless) compared to the younger version of himself (a hard worker). Whether his current state is due to the severe heat stroke he had suffered at the age of 22 or if it is truly because he is …show more content…
He does not contribute anything helpful throughout the entire book and the only big decision that he has ever made is forcing everyone on Addie’s “last dying wish” they all must travel to the town of Jefferson to bury her in her family’s cemetery. Rippetoe pictures him a “master manipulator” and that he uses carefully timed mumbles and shows of power to get his way and this is supported, until we arrive at the river scene. Here the characters are faced with the challenge of getting across the river without a bridge. As the boys gather around to devise a plan to get across, here is Anse’s contribution, “If it was just up, we could drive across…We could drive right on across it.” (Faulkner 124). Now if he truly was a master manipulator and had done all that work in an effort to make everyone go on this trip, wouldn’t one think that he would try just a tad harder in figuring out this conundrum that is standing in the way of him and his beloved teeth? On top of that, instead of just adding in his two cents then edging back off into the background he then states this obvious answer two more times! If he truly wanted to go to Jefferson that bad where he would enforce his ideas onto his family then what good would this do in aiding his quest for teeth? The answer… none, there is no purpose for this, just like Anse’s

The Picture of Dorian Gray Chapter I The studio was filled with the rich odor of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pinkflowering thorn. From the corner of the divan of Persian saddle-bags on which he was lying, smoking, as usual, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweet and honey-colored blossoms of the laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs; and now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid jade-faced painters who, in an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the black-crocketed spires of the early June hollyhocks, seemed to make the stillness 2 of 250 The Picture of Dorian Gray more oppressive...

In Cold Blood Pdf

...In Cold Blood Truman Capote I. The Last to See Them Alive The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there." Some seventy miles east of the Colorado border, the countryside, with its hard blue skies and desert-clear air, has an atmosphere that is rather more Far West than Middle West. The local accent is barbed with a prairie twang, a ranch-hand nasalness, and the men, many of them, wear narrow frontier trousers, Stetsons, and high-heeled boots with pointed toes. The land is flat, and the views are awesomely extensive; horses, herds of cattle, a white cluster of grain elevators rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveler reaches them. Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. Not that there's much to see simply an aimless congregation of buildings divided in the center by the main-line tracks of the Santa Fe Rail-road, a haphazard hamlet bounded on the south by a brown stretch of the Arkansas (pronounced "Ar-kan-sas") River, on the north by a highway, Route 50, and on the east and west by prairie lands and wheat fields. After rain, or when snowfalls thaw, the streets, unnamed, unshaded, unpaved, turn from the thickest dust into the direst mud. At one end of the town stands a stark old stucco structure, the roof of which supports an electric sign - dance - but the dancing has ceased and the advertisement has been dark for several years. Nearby is another building...

He was a model enlightened entrepreneur, a fact that took me years to appreciate. His compassion with his employees and dedication to service inspired me to be a better businessman and a better person. When I was growing up, he liked to say, “Son, the most important word in the English language is ‘empathy.’ ” When I told him I was starting a business, his first words were, “Always treat your employees right.” He learned that appreciation the hard way, losing his father at a young age and countless war buddies in the trenches.
