According to the Centers for Disease Control, by 2010, the forecast is that the percentage of obese persons in the U.S. will be at 40%. Obesity is defined as a bodily condition marked by excessive generalized disposition and storage of fat. (Merriam-Webster, 2008) Another definition involves the calculation of one’s BMI (body mass index). Body mass index is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. While BMI is not a direct measure of body fat, it is considered to be a reliable number to ascertain a person’s body fat. A person is considered obese if his or her BMI is 30 or higher. Obesity once thought of as a poor lifestyle choice is now considered a complex disease. (Anonymous, 2008) Obesity is considered a disorder of the central nervous system.
