...Sustainability and System Change Wal-Mart’s Pioneering Strategy Frank Dixon (Published on CSRwire.com, April 18, 2006) On October 24th, 2005, Lee Scott, CEO of Wal-Mart, gave one of the most important business speeches ever. In it, he committed the largest company in the world to making zero waste, using 100% renewable energy and selling sustainable products. The implications are huge. These goals cannot be achieved without broad systemic changes in areas including supply chain, regulatory and consumer awareness. To achieve its goals, Wal-Mart is integrating system change efforts into its sustainability strategy. By doing so, it is pioneering what may be the first sustainability strategy that actually has the potential to achieve sustainability (sustainability relates to ensuring society survives and prospers over the long-term). This article discusses the need to better address systemic issues that essentially compel all firms to negatively impact society. It also describes why sustainability will be the competitive advantage strategy of the 21st century and how Wal-Mart is capitalizing on this opportunity. System-Watch All companies produce negative environmental and social impacts. As companies impact the closed Earth system, pushback from the system is inevitable. This pushback can take the form of activist campaigns. As the largest company in the world, Wal-Mart has high environmental and social impacts. Several activist efforts have arisen in response to...

...Principles of Marketing: Final Exam RW Your University BSA310 Principles of Marketing: Final Exam Question #1: The concentration of my marketing plan is focused on the declining sales for the company, Barnes & Noble (B&N). Barnes & Noble is in the process of renegotiating our leases and assets in attempts to cut costs. Our sales are declining and we are faced with stiff competition from Amazon, Wal-Mart, Costco, and other discount retailers. According to MSN Money, Barnes & Noble has experienced declining sales, with only 7% increases over the last three years, as compared to Amazon’s 32% (Brush, 2012). Amazon’s increased sales are driven by the introduction of the Kindle Fire and their larger inventory of digital books. The difference in price between Barnes and Noble’s Nook and Amazon’s Kindle Fire are significant, with Kindle Fire being considerably cheaper for a comparable product. Until recently, Amazon was ahead of Barnes & Noble, in offering digital downloads of movies and music. However, announced as New! on our Barnes & Noble website, we have now partnered with Netflix and Marvel to offer streaming movies and comic books. This will increase our connection to the younger generation. While our products are desired and used by all varieties and ages on the spectrum, my suggestion would be to target the college student and younger genres. When we begin to segment the public, we must begin with Generation Y. Their buying...

...Construction of Oahu’s rail system that is currently underway should continue as planned to achieve the goal of alleviating the worst traffic problem in the country. As the subject of heated debate since [year rail was put up to vote], when 53 percent of the residents of Oahu voted in favor of having rail (author), there are loud voices in the community calling for termination of the project and one mayoral candidate is running with rail opposition as his sole platform. This essay argues that the people of Oahu are in dire need of this transportation system to reduce frustration and wasted time spent on the road, and addresses the flawed reasoning of those who oppose rail. People on Oahu need rail because traffic in Honolulu is ranked as the worst in the entire country. A 2011 poll conducted by __company__ found that traffic in Honolulu, based on distance traveled over time, was worse than traffic in well-known congested cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. If you ask any resident about their commuting experience, their response is highly likely to be filled with only complaints. It is very common for people who live in west Oahu (Kapolei, Makakilo, Ewa, Waipahu) and central Oahu (Mililani, Wahiawa) to spend between two to three hours commuting to town every weekday, possibly more if there is a stalled care or accident. However, traffic is not only a problem on weekdays – freeways and surface roads can be equally congested on weekends. With the population on...

...Laboratory Report Style Guide A formal lab report is how you communicate the details of an experiment to the outside world. There are many ways of writing up a laboratory experiment. You have probably already done different forms in science and biology classes. The format we will use in this class is called “journal article format,” because it is the same format that scientific journals require for published articles. More practically, it is the format required by most colleges. It more or less resembles the format of an English term paper. Sections Summary A standard journal article laboratory report is organized into the following sections: Title: A single sentence fragment (no verb) that describes your experimental objective and gives some indication of the method (procedure). Abstract: A one-paragraph summary of the entire experiment—your procedure, results, and analysis. Introduction: A description of the scientific background for your experiment, including any previous experiments that your experiment builds on. (Remember to cite your sources!) The final sentence (analogous to the thesis statement in a term paper) is the objective of your experiment. Materials and Methods: A detailed description (in paragraph format) of the procedure for your experiment. Results: Your data, as you observed/recorded it. Note that this section is only for data that you observed or measured directly. Your analysis (including calculations) belongs in the Discussion section...

...PARADISE BEYOND THE BEATEN TRACK Our family took a long-overdue vacation to the northern areas last June. It was a well-planned trip with members of four families getting together for a chill-out. We congregated at Islamabad and started on our “voyage of discovery” early the next morning. To allow all of us to enjoy to the full we had hired a coaster driven by a very seasoned young driver who is familiar with the area. Our route took us from Islamabad to Abbotabad to Mansehra to Balakot to Kaghan to Naran to Shogran to Lalezar to Nathiagali to Ayubia to Islamabad & back to Lahore. The trip from Islamabad to Abbotabad was quite good. A good place for a short stopover in Abbotabad for refreshments & freshening up is Lahore Chatkhara Restaurant where the food & snacks are quite good. The tea is exceptionally good. No trip is complete without a puncture or two. Our coaster had one near the restaurant here. So we lost about half an hour in the process of changing the tyres and repairing the punctured one. Mansehra is a sleepy little town; Balakot was very neat and well arranged before the earthquake. The recently planted tea bushes above the road created a very pleasing sight. Kaghan is another place worth spending a day in. Little restaurants line the road and tracks meander down to the silvery Kunhar River rushing past the town. We had piping hot Pakoras and tea on our way back, here. The light drizzle made them even more enjoyable. The huge walnut trees looked majestic...
