1. Explain why Sears or Wal-Mart cannot effectively create a trendy counterculture image.

Wal-mart and Sears in large part created the idea and foundation for the thinking of bigger is better. How can they try and cater to the little man or sub-culture when they are the very corporation that killed the little man. The basic principles of a sub-culture are to go against the “norm”, and Wal-mart is one of the largest examples of the corporation normalcy. Therefore, the reasons above would be by answer to why they cannot effectively create a trendy counterculture image.

2. Could the big box stores sell merchandise identical to Urban Outfitters? Explain your answer.

Of course they do in my opinion! Big box stores always take a look at what the market around them is selling best and most of (the trends), anything from clothing to kid’s toys or apparel or even house hold items. The big box store creates a cheaper, less quality product that they mass produce for less. For example, the latest fad for children even young adults is “silly bandz” (rubber bracelets that pop back to their original shape when you take them off, they have animal shaped ones, Disney themes, etc..). Now you see them everywhere but they are called something slightly different from the original brand and are most likely made of cheaper rubber as well and sell for less. Thus in my opinion how the big box stores cater to the “middle to lower class”, why pay more for a “brand name”?. You can always find the latest fashion trends, the ones you see on tv and in magazines at the big boxes stores for less of course, but you have to remember you get what you pay for and I believe that to be true in almost anything you purchase.

3. Identify at least three reasons why exclusivity is valuable? The biggest reason why exclusivity is valuable is supply and demand. Just like Senk stated “scarcity creates demand”. If you create or invent a product, but only produce a few quantities and people love the item, then your price of course goes up considerably as people will out bid each other for the item. It can drive the price of the item through the roof. Urban Outfitters claims that every store they open is different and the products they sell are unique and only few quantities are sent to each store, however I went on their web site and you can order right from it, so I don’t think they have “exclusivity” like they claim to. Exclusivity to me means, it’s a rare item or product that you will pay more for and only a few people in the world will have the same exact thing. For example, an original painting by a famous artist you will have to pay an absolute fortune for it, but no one in the world could ever say they have the same thing. There will be of course copies made and sold but to have the authentic original master piece is the most valuable.

4. Senk says that shopping is largely entertainment. Do you agree or disagree with him? Explain your answer.
Well I agree 100% if I am talking about myself. I can shop all day long every day. I would love nothing more than to have a job that people paid me to shop for them. I love shopping for other people as well and for myself and I would agree that it is totally entertainment for me. I love to find a good deal and to shop around first to see what all my options are before I even buy or I may purchase something and find a better deal down the mall and I will return the first item purchased. Coupons and sales ads are normally what attract my attention to the store. I must feel as if I am getting a good deal most of the time. I also enjoy giving gifts therefore shopping is the first step in gift giving. I love to see the person’s reaction, because I am confident they are going to love what I bought for them. Now not all people are like me by any means, some people can’t stand shopping at all. When they do have to go to the store or a mall they get in get what they need and get out. Typically men are not the most patient shoppers in my experience. Some don’t mind going shopping but still want to get in and out and really don’t care how much it costs or if they got the best deal. In conclusion I would say yes shopping is completely entertaining to me, but certainly not for everyone.
