Good Afternoon chairperson, ladies, gentlemen and fellow debaters. Tonight I, along with my fellow team mates, will convince you that Urban Sprawl should not be restricted. (We agree/disagree with the oppositions definition of this debate, state their definition) We have defined ‘urban sprawl’ to be the expansion of a metropolitan or suburban area into the surrounding environment, specifically in Australia. Thus, to restate the case, we believe that it is both unreasonable and unnecessary to prohibit urban sprawl in a thriving country like Australia. Without urban sprawl, countries would not be able encourage new developments in production and technology. Urban sprawl encourages the building of new houses, infrastructure - roads, hospitals and parks which requires labour hence increasing employment and growth of that location. As the natural rate of the population increases, essential infrastructure is required to meet the needs of a growing population. This is essential to overcome the potential effects of overcrowding, homelessness and sky rocketing high prices as wells as lack of funding available for all citizens. There will be better schools with extensive areas of playgrounds and classrooms, as residents want to sprawl out to the town areas. People with school-aged children find smaller, less crowded schools with high quality funded programs preferable than schools in the city. As cities and rural areas continue to expand, space is required for the construction of houses and the development of the industry. Many houses can protect the environment by using solar panels and households can switch to electric cars. Adopting a citywide approach to fitting solar panels and providing charging points for cars will enable suburban homes to provide most of the power for the city centre, while also keeping the transport alive. The expansion of our society symbolises a growing economy in Australia. Overpopulation in Australia has been rapidly rising over the past years, and they need to provide housing for new residents as well as services such as roads, schools, hospitals, emergency services and public transport. With the rise in population growth, local communities spread further and there are lower land costs and houses in the outer suburbs of the cities. Residents love to find areas that are less trafficked, and this leads them to sprawl out to other sections of the town. Unprecedented development, cutting of trees, loss of green over and long traffic jams force people away from the city’s poor infrastructure. People in high income groups have stronger preference towards larger homes, more bedrooms and bigger balconies and lawns. This also causes urban sprawl as this option is not available in crowded cities. Residents look out for low-density residential areas where they can get home according to their own preferences. Standards of living have now increased and people have more ability to pay for more travel and commute longer distances to work and back home. In order to take action for the expanding population, there will need to be more land requirements, placed at a lower price.
