Health Care in the Us-a System or Not

...Health care in the US-a system or not Angela Stafford University of Phoenix Health care organizations and delivery systems HCS/531 Russell Arenz III November 08, 2010 Health care in the US-a system or not A system is defined by Mosby's medical dictionary as "a group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole" (Mosby's 2009). Health care system is defined as "the complete network of agencies, facilities, and all providers of health care in a specified geographic area" (Ginsbury, Doherty, Ralston, & Senkeeto, 2008, p. 55). To make a system complete there has to be parts that bring it together. This paper will explore some of the components of a health care system, fundamental goals of a system and whether or not these components and goals interact with each other to form a whole. How medical treatment is arranged, financed and delivered are components of a healthcare system. Treatment is organized by the providers that offer the treatment and whether the providers are practicing in private practice, in small or large groups, or in corporate associations. Financing treatment includes any entity involved in payment of treatment services including the individual who requires the service or any type of insurance agency. Treatment delivery refers to the place treatment is provided, for example, rural or urban locations and inpatient or outpatient settings. Three fundamental objectives of a health care system include...

The Us Health Care System

...The US Health Care System Danny Gomez HCS/531 February 7, 2012 The healthcare system in the United States is very complex. Both its inherent composition and the external factors that shape it include a multitude of elements that add to its complexity. This paper will present a definition of the health care system in the US, describe the implications of beliefs and values on this system, and offer examples of the various health care delivery models that comprise it. A health care system can be defined, as a grouping of organizations, institutions, and resources functioning with the intention to fulfill the health care needs of communities and/or populations. Such a system includes components that cover four major functions – financing, insurance, delivery, and payment. In a functioning system one would expected to find its components carefully coordinated and interrelated. However, the US this system is comprised of independent components that work simultaneously but not always collaboratively to deliver and fulfill the requirements of health care. The reality of the US health care system is that its components function independently, in a loosely connected fashion, and without a single central agency governing and regulating it. This characteristic is contrasting to systems in many other countries that have a national heath care program designed to provide a set of equitable health services to all its citizens. Access to health care services in the US varies,...

Health Care Issues in the Us

...Health Services Organization Assignment #1, Health Care issues in the United States Dr. Rashida Biggs Alexander Johnson October 20, 2011 Explain how health is affected by behaviors, economics, and social structure. Imagine a world where no one smokes cigarettes. This would be an amazing phenomenon due to not only a major economic factor but the health concerns that would not be an issue. Smoking is a behavior issue that has been argued since smoking ever was introduced. This behavior began more than 400 years ago (Schuman, MD) and has continued to be a huge health concern worldwide. There is historical data on tobacco use in the United States through the US Department of Agriculture with dates as early as the 1880’s to support the consumption by US citizens. With such a behavioral issue, the health care will always have a concern due to the effects of cigarette smoke and other tobacco related products. Health issues like cancer and cardiovascular diseases are directly related to this behavior. Although the rates of the diseases listed have shown somewhat of a decline, the health issues still remain and will for some time. Alcohol and illicit drug use are other behaviors that effect the health of Americans. When citizens use drugs, alcohol or tobacco, there are behaviors that are attributed to the use of such items that effect the health of individuals. These behaviors also play a role economically in the US. It has been studied that the behaviors discussed are addictive...

Financing Health Care in the Us

...Financing Health Care in the U.S. Tim Johnson HCCUniversity NURS 3006 Section 02, The Context of Healthcare Delivery Nov 24, 2013 Financing Health Care in the U.S. Financing healthcare in the U. S. continues to be a major concern, and going forward it could become a monsoon. There are many methods available to finance healthcare in this country, and some people have access to several methods. However, a large percentage does not have access to any methods, and as a result they are uninsured. Among the methods used to finance healthcare are private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. We will discuss Medicare, and some of the issues the federal government is facing with rising health care cost. Money and how to pay for things are always at the forefront of the problems. Unlike other healthcare funding issues Medicaid is funded totally by the federal government. Private insurance is funded by employers, employees and private citizens. Medicaid is funded 2/3 by the federal government and 1/3 by the state government. Medicare is currently funded by tax payers and the federal income tax. The population is getting older, and many baby boomers are nearing 65 years of age and will be eligible for Medicare. If the current trend continues many experts believe the system will be bankrupt within 10 years. As a result, the government will have to increase the federal income tax, or find a way to reduce cost. One of the main issues is that curtailing cost normally means...

Health Care Coverage for Non-Us Citizens

... Lack of health care coverage is a serious issue for the citizens of the United States. Imagine if you were a non-citizen, or even worse, an illegal immigrant to this country. In 2005, the United States population included 36 million foreign-born residents (Lee & Choi, 2009). In this same time, non-citizens were 1.6 times less likely to access health care compared to the citizens (Lee & Choi, 2009). Non-citizen refers to foreign-born people legally in the United States, and follow the same rules and rights as US Citizens, but do not have the right to participate in political issues (Lee & Choi, 2009). Illegal immigrants will describe persons who have entered this country without proper authority or who no longer have a valid visa (Lee & Choi, 2009). The effects of health care, or the lack of health care, affect persons in the United States regardless of status of citizenship. Disease and accidental injury do not discriminate based on citizenship, nationality or financial class. Treatment of disease and injury currently does vary greatly. Access to Health Care There is a shortage of primary care physicians and specialists across this country, and this provides the flexibility of these provides to choose who to provide care to in the physician office. Private physicians may refuse to treat patients who have Medicaid or cannot pay to time of service. Even persons with health insurance may find accessing...

The Future Challenges Facing Health Care in the Us

...The Future Challenges Facing Health Care in the United States Gregrey McDaniel Professor: Manuel Johnican, PhD Strayer University HSA 500 11 June 2011 Identify and describe at least three of the most difficult issues facing health care in the United States today. One of the most difficult issues facing the United States health care system is combating diseases. Even with mortality rates continuing to decrease and with life expectancy rates continuing to increase, these trends are masking concerns with specific diseases, injuries, and population groups. The diseases that still give us a formidable challenge include many varieties of cancer, some kinds of infectious diseases, and influenza. The second difficult issue is health disparities. These disparities are widespread. Differences in how patients receive treatment and the access to treatment are measurable through financial, physical, and attitudinal indicators. Disparities affect all groups of our population. These disparities are related to race, sex, language, genetics, age, and income. We all could benefit from a more efficient system which removes or minimalizes disparities. The third difficult issue facing the health care system in the United States is paying for health care. In the United States, we have had insurance as the biggest payer of health care for many years. There has been evolution in the types of insurance and how they manage aspects of the business. Insurance companies have been held...

Uk Health Care System Vs Us Healthcare System Case Study

...best convenient healthcare system for you or your family. You want to know their incentives, benefits, scarcities, and disadvantages. In this case, the UK and US healthcare system come in hand. Both have great and not so great methods when it comes to these terms. Some would argue one is better than the other. This being said, which one would be a better system? The UK healthcare system is a system run by the government, which gives open access to all users. This system brings many benefits that would turn out to be incentives. For example, they have great preventative treatment/medicine that keeps its population in a healthy case. This is possible because they calculate the money to spend and research for the better medicine to its patients. Another benefit is that the UK systems has the National Health Service (NHS), which was created by Aneurin Bevan. The NHS is a public health service that gives free service and treatment to those that qualified. This being said, are the benefits and incentives that motivate people to favor the UK healthcare system....

The United States Is Rapidly Approaching a Crisis with Delivering Health Care Services to the Population. in 2011 the Us Spent in Excess of $2 Trillion, Which Was 17.9% of the Gdp an Amount Roughly Equating to $8,600

...The costs of healthcare in the United States has skyrocketed over the last several years. According to CMS, as cited on unitedhealthgroup.com (2015) the GDP has grown from historically 11% to an estimated 19.6% by 2021. This trend indicates that the cost of healthcare in the US is rapidly excessing the income level of those who pay for it. Over 60% of employed individuals that receive healthcare benefits from their employers have experienced such a rise in premiums and out-of-pockets expenses that it has more than doubled between 1999 and 2008 (ssab.gov, 2009). While there are multiple components of the healthcare system and multiple populations that the healthcare system needs to cover one of the largest single population that will be a tremendous consumer of healthcare is the elderly population. As we have discussed many times throughout this class, the elderly population is growing by huge numbers primarily due to the baby boomer generation hitting retirement age. According to the American Hospital Association (2007) the aging Baby Boomers will cause the over 65 population to almost triple by year 2030. Along with this immense population group they will bring with them demands and challenges for the healthcare system as 6 out of 10 will be living with multiple chronic illness. With Medicare being the primary source of payment of healthcare in the over-65 age group it has been noted that the median annual out-of-pocket cost to Medicare beneficiaries will reach approximately...
