...America Online (AOL) In the early 1980s, Case felt there was a latent market for user friendly online services. The online services provided at that time were very complex and costly and provided poor quality content. Believing that the online service market would evolve into a big industry in future, Case, Jim Kimsey and Marc Seriff founded AOL in 1985. The company was initially incorporated as Quantum Computer Services (Quantum). Quantum provided online services to consumers via PC modems. Quantum's first product was 'Q-Link,' a proprietary online service that routed emails and chat through its communication network (via telephone cables). Q-Link became popular in the market, and within a year its user base crossed the 10,000 mark. | | In October 1989, the company launched a private online service for all computer users in the US. The new service, identified by a blue triangle with a swirl in the center (the company's logo), offered games, e-mail, chat, news and travel information. In 1991, Quantum was renamed America Online and Case was appointed CEO of the company. ------------------------------------------------- The total customer base of the company during that period was 150,000, with total revenues amounting to $ 20 million. During the 1990s, AOL acquired Compuserve, Netscape and the ICQ brand. These acquisitions helped it establish itself as a global online service provider.4 During the same, AOL entered the e-commerce solutions market through an alliance with...

...Firstly the benchmark for a failed merger must be set. The one most commonly used it whether the share price of the firm rose in comparison to an industry specific average, or whether it fell. However tis only considers the financial success of the deal, and neglects its strategic and social impact. The merger may have met the majority of its objectives (e.g. A reduction in real cost, improved position within the industry for future growth), but there was no increase in shareholder wealth, maybe because the assets were overpriced. Indeed in the first few years after a merger or acquisition out-performing the other, more established, firms in the industry can be difficult. Currently almost all studies dealing with the failure and success of mergers have focussed on the shareholder value in the short term. REF. Indeed the few studies that have analysed the long term implications propose that if the mergers are well selected and well planned the business capability of the brand can be increased. Maybe instead of considering the financial failure of a takeover, the societal success should be looked into. If the merger reduces the resources needed increases the range of products available and offers better quality products, the in terms of the consumer is this not a success? There are, broadly speaking, two main areas which can cause a merger to fail. The first is improper managing and strategy, and the second is cultural differences between the two firms. If both are will though...

...Social Networking (Today and Tomorrow) By: Gaurav Mehta Aashish Raina Vivek Wadhwa “Social media was born from sites not trying to change the way we behave or to provide us with extra information, it was just to assist our behaviour” Well if you say it all started with Facebook or Orkut, you will be surprised. Social Networking has been in our past, present and will continue in our future. So when did it start exactly? To understand that let’s first understand what is social networking? Social networking is about meeting new people and communicating with those whom you already know. So technically, social networking has been there for ages. The concerts, family functions, weddings, plays etc. can be termed as ways of social networking. However we consider the online networking as social networking. So let us focus on that part and see how it developed into what we have today. The online social networking: It’s about 6 C’s: 1. Communications 2. Connectedness 3. Common Experience 4. Content 5. Commerce 6. Cool Experiences (or Entertainment). The online social networks mirror our offline lives. It all started with CompuServe, which was the first online service to offer internet connectivity, albeit limited access, as early as 1989. It connected its proprietary e-mail service to allow incoming and outgoing messages to other Internet e-mail addresses. In early 1990’s, CompuServe was very popular with thousands of users visiting its numerous...

...People have been killed by Tasers, but the likeliness of that happening versus that of a firearm is miniscule. Some officers have gone as far to say that they were reaching for their Taser only to find out after discharging that what they in fact grabbed was their gun. You may be familiar with Oscar Grant’s story which was portrayed by actor Michael B. Jordan in the 2013 film titled Fruitvale Station. The officer, who fatally shot Grant, Johannes Mehserle, testified “he had shot Grant accidentally because he thought he had pulled out his Taser, not his utility weapon” (NBC Bay Area). This accident is one that Mehserle will have to live with for the entirety of his life, and whether he’s telling the truth is up for discussion. It’s difficult to believe Mehserle, because an officer’s firearm is holstered on the...

...Trevor Swenson Professor Jones College Composition 29, March 2012 Movie Comparison Watching movies at home or at a movie theater is a great way to have fun in so many different ways. Both options provide unique atmospheres but only one option can be truly more comfortable to watch. Keeping in mind all of the various factors; late night movie premiers versus staying comfortably at home, having a quite peaceful movie experience without interruptions versus the talkative social atmosphere of a indoor theater, or even enhancing the movie experience with expensive IMAX/ 3D that most standard television sets don’t provide. All these factors are important when deciding on how and where an individual may watch their next motion picture. Trying to weigh out the positives and negatives of watching movies at home compared to going to your local movie theater just became simple. All of us can relate to that exciting feeling as the hours countdown to a midnight showing of movie. It can be a real treat, but is it really that big of a blockbuster of a movie to be the first one to see it? Midnight showings usually play around twelve o’clock in the middle of the night. These hours are late and can interfere with work or school the next morning. Instead of trying to buy the last remaining tickets for a midnight showing, it would be much easier to watch a movie at home comfortably on your couch or even on your bed. According to Engadget.com, “sometimes the hype of a movie commercial and...

Achieving the mission through partnerships and convenience. Ex. Partnership with AOL, alliance with other online book retailers through Affiliate Program. It is important for Amazon to start with the customer and work backwards. “To be a company where people can find and discover anything they want to buy online.” Amazon has gone out of its way to insure that people will find things that they need at Amazon, at lower prices and better selection. Technology Fighting Against White Collar Fraud Looking back at the 10 major accounting scandals that changed the business world, it was noted that most of their unraveling came about during the turn of the new millennium, which was a time when the American trade and industries were beginning to experience the benefits and detriments of high-tech computerization. Information storage and communication became sophisticated, which made possible the compilation of hordes of information in an instant. Recording and verification of accounting transactions in realtime were made easier and more accurate, which facilitated the reconciliation of supporting documents versus sources, with very little effort needed. Federal regulators were provided with data that revealed the corrupt practices of high-profile companies and their CEOs. Their bankruptcies became inevitable as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and financial analysts began to see the signs of irregularities among numerous companies. When the SEC ordered the restatement of their financial reports in accordance with the GAAP rules, it turned out that these companies were mostly founded by inflated revenues and negative financial conditions. Soon enough, their reputations and financial credibilities began bursting like bubbles, in the wake of the ensuing investigations. QuickBooks From Intuit quickbooks.in Must Have Tool for Business...

...Class Action Law Suits Allen R. Yates One of the most fascinating aspects of business law is the class action lawsuit. I find this intriguing because class action law suits are often litigated on the same principles as other types of civil action suits, however, the outcome of the class action lawsuit often may have a deep impact on our society, as well as our legal system as a whole. In a normal civil lawsuit, where the plaintiff is the victor, said plaintiff is typically well compensated for their respective damages. Thus it can be viewed that is how justice is served in these cases. In the class action lawsuit where the plaintiffs win, often the individual is not proportionately compensated for their damages as compared to the victor in the average civil suit. In fact there have been class action law suits that have been held in favor of the plaintiffs, damages have been rewarded by the courts, but the individual did not receive a cent of monetary compensation. Yet, in these cases, justice has still been adequately served on the basis of morality. . In this paper, we are going to take a look at class action lawsuits. This paper will cover the history of class action lawsuits, what exactly a class action law suit is, how a class action suit is filed, and we’ll take a look at some of the more famous and impacting class action lawsuits in our nation’s history. The history of most of the United States legal system is deeply rooted in the heart...

...Becoming a successful dynamic leader and entrepreneur in today’s world of business requires certain distinguishing characteristics, characteristics that most do not possess. Although most leaders seem to have been born with inherent leadership characteristics, the art of being a successful leader and entrepreneur can be learned. In addition, leadership styles and organizational goals have to be aligned in order to be successful. Structure, policies & mission within an organization can also lead an entrepreneur’s venture to failure. An alarming 62% of small businesses fail within the first six years of existence (Kurtz & Boone, 2011). Such statistics can discourage an entrepreneurial idea from even “leaving the ground.” Hence, prior to an entrepreneurial business commencing, reliable resources and tools need to be consulted. The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of entrepreneurs and leaders, leadership styles, resources, and the tools available for establishing a good foundation for small businesses and good leadership practices in order to be successful. The practices, thoughts, and resources of entrepreneurs and leaders have been examined for years. With the financial economy dynamically changing, it takes a unique individual to head an organization. Entrepreneurs need to examine the past leaders and resources to better equip themselves to be successful. Create a hybrid theory/philosophy which combines the common elements found in the thinking...

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction The traditional delivery system for higher education has been a classroom setting with a professor giving a lecture and students listening and writing notes. Interaction between the professor and student has been viewed as an essential learning element within this arrangement. However, innovations in educational delivery mechanisms have challenged this paradigm. Advances in Information Technology (IT) are enabling little used educational delivery methods such as On-line Learning (OL). The result is that many institutions of higher learning have adopted on-line education as the next logical step in educational delivery systems. These systems are being promoted as the educational pedagogy of the future. Some experts have gone as far as to predict that the "residential based model," that is, students attending classes at prearranged times and locations will disappear in the near future (Blustain, Goldstein, & Lozier 1999; Drucker 1997). However, one overriding question that must be addressed is how will these new educational delivery approaches that move away from the basic face to face relationship between a professor and students impact student learning and student perceptions of learning. Online learning can be defined as an approach that utilizes Internet technologies to communicate and collaborate in an educational context. This includes technology that supplements traditional classroom training with web-based...

...Jeffrey Cole, Director of the Center for Communication Policy at UCLA, spoke at the Milken Institute Forum on Sept. 21 on “How the Internet Is Changing Our Social, Political, and Economic Lives.” The following is an edited transcript of his remarks. “How the Internet Is Changing Our Social, Political, and Economic Lives” Thank you. I am overwhelmed at this turnout. I don’t think it’s for me. You must be interested in this Internet thing we’re all talking about. But before we talk about all this, I’m going to tell you a little bit about how I got interested in the Internet, and how this ties into some of the work I’m doing. About three years ago, I discovered something that was really compelling to me. I discovered that television viewing among kids under the age of 14 was down for the first time in the history of television. For the first time in the 51 years of television, since 1948, kids had found something they liked as much or more than television — computers and the Internet. And this made me, as a social scientist, begin to realize that this technology phenomenon, which is not a fad, really will affect everything, and will transform much. It will have an influence like the printing press did, I believe, on just about everything. And I want to demonstrate some of that today. We can already see some of that beginning to happen. Alan Greenspan, a few months ago, called the Internet “the engine of the economic expansion.” It’s been linked as the single biggest...
