James Joyce's Use Of Paralysis and Epiphany in Araby
In the book Araby a nameless boy becomes completely infatuated with his friends older sister. I’m going to explain how James uses scrupulous meanness to show the paralysis and epiphany the boy goes through. Scrupulous meanness means using the minimal amount of words and not expressing very much emotion or imagery. The girl he has fallen for wishes to go to the bazaar for a special night but is unable to because of a church retreat she has responsibility for. The younger boy tries to be the hero explaining how he will go for her and bring her back something in hopes to get the girl to like him.
