Go Variatns

...National variants[edit] The difficulty in defining the rules of Go has led to the creation of many subtly different rulesets. They vary in areas like scoring method, ko, suicide, handicap placement, and how neutral points are dealt with at the end. These differences are usually small enough to maintain the character and strategy of the game, and are typically not considered variants. Different rulesets are explained in Rules of Go. In some of the examples below, the effects of rule differences on actual play are minor, but the tactical consequences are substantial. Tibetan Go[edit] The starting position for Tibetan Go Tibetan Go is played on a 17×17 board, and starts with six stones (called Bo) from each color placed on the third line as shown. White makes the first move.[1] There is a unique ko rule: a stone may not be played at an intersection where the opponent has just removed a stone. This ko rule is so different from other major rulesets that it alone significantly changes the character of the game. For instance, snapbacks must be delayed by at least one move, allowing an opponent the chance to create life. Finally, a player who occupies or surrounds all four corner points (the 1-1 points) receives a bonus of 40 points, and if he controls the center point also, he receives a further bonus of 10 points. Sunjang Baduk[edit] Main article: Sunjang baduk The starting position for Sunjang Baduk Sunjang baduk is a different form of Go (baduk) that evolved in Korea...

...The program is called AntWordProfiler and can be found at http://www.laurenceanthony.net (Anthony 2014). Several frequency lists can be used and the program will determine the percent coverage of each 1000 headword vocabulary levels. Based on the coverage a language learner can see how many cumulative headwords they need to know to reach the 98% coverage need for pleasure reading (Table 2). Using the column CUMTOKEN% we can determine how many thousand words of vocabulary a student would need to read this book at each coverage percent. The advantage of analyzing unmodified texts is that it is fast, takes only a minimal knowledge of computers, and can be done by non-native English...

Language Theories

...Language theory research informs us that young children's language development is influenced by many factors, including having sensitive adults and older children around them who will listen and attend to their expressions and who will use and model appropriate language themselves. This has been called 'Motherese' by researchers led by Cathy Snow. Children's babbling during their first year includes the sounds of every world language and 'crib talk' demonstrates their intense interest in the sounds they hear around them. Although children with a hearing loss will stop babbling, if they grow up in a home with parents who can sign, they will follow the same patterns of development using their first language - signing - and will sign their first word at around the same age that hearing children speak theirs. Between two and three years of age most children will be able to use language to influence the people closest to them, indicating the links with brain development and their growing ability to 'mind read' (this means they are beginning to understand the minds of their parents, sisters and brothers and try to manipulate them through persuasion, mock tears, teasing and so on). Research shows that, in general, boys acquire...
