Vacations in the Sun

The city of Miami is increasingly highlighted year after year with their lavish hotels and fancy social scene. The term vacation is very custom to South Florida being that it is family vacation hotspot for every season besides the blistering heat of the summer. South Florida is loaded with many popular cities that attract tourism for their own personal reasons. Each area has its own spin on the beautiful physical features that Florida has to offer. Although the state of Florida as a whole is located in the southern region of the US it is not entirely warm all year around. With that being said the primary focus of vacation destinations fall in South Florida more specifically on the eastern coast. Significant amounts of people that are able to afford a privilege like this obtain homes in both the North East and in South Florida. These snowbirds spend their winters in their Florida homes and summers up North. The average age of a snowbird is roughly the age of retirement or around sixty-five years old. For the remaining population throughout this world who do not have homes in Miami, for example, need a place to stay upon their arrival. These vacations are most often intended for leisure and an escape from a family or individual’s everyday life. Luckily, vacationers have breathtaking choices of where to unwind and forget about whatever thoughts cause them uneasiness. Collins Avenue is located in South Beach, Miami and is flooded with world-class hotels that tend to each and every one of the guests needs. The placement of Collins allows the gorgeous strip of hotels to be located directly on the beach providing outrageous views. Many guestrooms and suites have spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the twinkling necklace of lights that reveals Miami Beach at night. Rooms and suites are mostly fully equipped with high definition flat screen TVs, advanced sound systems, as well as top of the line computers either in each room or just down the hall. The ultra-luxurious amenities ultimately attempt to provide a paradise for their guests that cannot be found anywhere else. Working people seek for leisure to balance the difficulties in their everyday lives. In the 1940’s a French philosopher wrote an essay in order to better help understand that relationship between one’s work, leisure, and private life. Lefebvre was a French sociologist, intellectual and philosopher who was generally considered a Neo-Marxist. He was a respected professor and a credited author. Lefebvre studied at the University of Paris and graduated in 1920. Shortly after, he was working with Paul Nizan, Norbert Guterman, Georges Friedmann, Georges Politzer and Pierre Morhange in the Philosophies group seeking a “philosophical revolution”. Lefebvre joined the French Communist Party in 1928 and later published attacks on opponents of its line such as Nizan. His studies are reflected in this essay by his ability to go in such detail to the entire human population and analyzing their perception of work and leisure. Lefebvre wrote an essay that targets the relations between work, leisure, and private life with regards to an individual’s life. He believes that a person’s choice of leisure was subjective upon their work and is normally different from one another. The word leisure is defined as being able to shut the stressful part of one’s mind off temporarily and strictly take part in enjoyable activities. It is clear that people must work but Lefebvre believes that the way modern work is performed is detrimental to the individual performing it. The essay encapsulates the idea of individuality and therefore the lack of that is created by work. Lefebvre states that work alienates humans from themselves and does not allow personal development. Although they are still serving society and developing something, they are stunting the intellectual growth of their minds. The generic nature of most positions in the work world prevents workers to express themselves as well as diminishing the control of their decisions. Leisure is intended to be the opposite of work but many common forms of leisure can be criticized and questioned if they really are in fact defined as leisure. To an office working man or woman the thought of a week in a hotel in South Beach could never be questioned as not being a week of leisure. Breaking the chains of their cubicles and freely walking down the beach with sand sifting through their toes while the waves break on their ankles is one of the best gift they could ask for. Looking from the outside there is no chance that one of these hotels couldn’t not only be leisure but one of the best leisure’s possible. However, with his intelligence and experience Lefebvre would find aspects of the leisure’s provided by a hotel on Collins to critique. World wide the beach is heavily desired as somewhere to get away but according to Lefebvre tanning does not seem to qualify as a defined leisure because of the isolation involved and overall damage it can cause. Vacationers seek out hotels in warm areas for the advantage of having a beach and most people enjoy the beach to get suntan and lay out for hours. At the majority of hotels it is second nature to walk to the beach and automatically tell the chair attendant how many chairs are needed and then point out where while he sets them up with towels and thankfully takes a tip. Once comfortable the vacationer will shut their eyes for hours on end silently soaking up the sun. Ironically when people lay out there is little conversation that takes place. It is odd that in an attempt to run away from alienation in the workforce vacationers find leisure in lying by themselves that is just as much alienation as working is. The sun does have some good vitamins but is also quite dangerous to human skin. Diseases develop from the radiation that can lead to sicknesses as terrible as cancer. Although it happens over time the suns negative effects are in fact way worse than the temporary darker skin it provides. Miami is very close to the equator and has very direct sunlight making the radiation that much stronger. Work and leisure at first appear to be two very different words but especially when analyzed through the lens of Lefebvre’s beliefs it is clear that they are not so easy to differentiate. Instead it is more beneficial to study the relations between the two and find a balance that makes every day life enjoyable yet productive while incorporating a mix of work and leisure. Lefebvre examines leisure very closely but does provide valid arguments about the truth of leisure and what is actually pure leisure.

...Hotdog55555 April 27, 2009 Written Communications 101 Manny Diaz Cruise Vacation or a Resort Vacation? Some people argue by asking the question, which is a better vacation? Is it a cruise vacation or an all- inclusive resort vacation? There are a lot of things that play a part in which is a better vacation; anything from food, activities, age of people to the price. My wife and I have taken both of these vacations in the past 12 months and will try to share our likes and dislikes. Some of the highlights are the same. They both have lots and lots of food. They both are full of fun with plenty to do and if you get bored, I would consider the experience your own fault. Our first cruise experience came with the opportunity to spend it with six other friends back in May of 2008. Carnival was the one we choose because people refer to it as a party boat (Cruise mates). If a person is looking for more of a party atmosphere, go with carnival. That is what we did and the reviews were correct. For a younger crowd; go in the spring or fall and for fewer days because kids are in school. Our first resort was nine days in Jamaica at an all inclusive Sandals Resort. The time was March 20th 2009 which was our honey moon. What makes Sandals the best place to spend your vacation, there is eight other locations over the island. People stayed at the less expensive location and played at all the rest which is included in the price. While everything is included in the price for the...

City or Beach

...smell of saltwater is bitter sweet. The locations being described are New York City and Long Branch Beach. There are many differences between these places, such as the kind of activities, clothing and equipments, and their pace of life. The first major difference between vacationing on the beach or in a city is the kind of activities you are able to do. While vacationing on the beach, the mind-set is to unwind life’s stresses while enjoying the warm touch from the almighty sun. The average beach vacation includes a wide range of activities, from relaxing on hot sand to catching waves in crisp ocean water to land and sea-based sports. Then there are long evenings of cool, breezy walks and hot nights on the dance floor. However, the most common activities while visiting the beach is mostly water related events such as sailing, swimming, and surfing. But let’s not forget the most sought after activity while visiting the beach, that is sun bathing. The simplicity of lying down on the soft, warm sand while the sun caresses you with its warm touch is wonderful. In the city, even if you are not mesmerized by the city's soaring skyscrapers and monuments, you will be blown away by its flourishing arts, food, fashion, and nightlife scenes. The Big Apple is home to some of the most iconic sights in the country, which are also recognized across the world. You can spend your morning browsing Fifth Avenue's designer racks and your afternoon catching stunning city views from...

Wild Fire Research Paper

...Wild Fires and Life Lessons Going on summer vacation is meant to be enjoyable, fun and relaxing. Summer vacations are intended to create long lasting memories. The last thing I could have imagined experiencing was a wildfire while being hundreds of miles away from home. Living thru a wildfire was not the memory I wanted to create. I wanted to experience fun in the sun. I did not want to experience unknowns, uncertainty or even panic. The Summer of 2012 thought me the value of my family. Materialistic items are not essential; they are only things and stuff, they can be rebuilt and be replaced, but family is irreplaceable. Creating Memories Summer vacation of 2012 began just like any other traditional American family summer vacation, a two-weeks away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Having moved into our new home less than two weeks before, we were ready for a little relaxation and sun soaking, my son and I were off to Galveston, TX. We arrived at our vacation beach house on Friday, June 22 and decided we would simply relax on the beach enjoying the warm sun and ocean breeze. We began our Saturday morning by bike riding up and down the ocean front for miles on miles soaking up the sun yet being cooled by the sea breeze. That afternoon, we decided we would take the boat out for a few...

Mountains vs. Beaches

...Where to Vacation at the Mountains or Beaches Jacqueline D. Jackson ENG 121 English Composition I September 3, 2012 Taking a vacation is always exciting and sometimes difficult to decide on. In this county we have several options to choose from. The most popular ones people choose from are going to the beaches or the beautiful mountains. They both offer a lot of activities to do once someone arrives at their destination, but what they do offer is totally different in style from each other. The three reasons for someone wanting to go vacation at the mountains are climate, types of activities and location. The weather will be one of the most important reasons for someone wanting to vacation there. If a person hates cold weather, they might have a difficult time in the mountains. The cold weather in the mountains is really one and only reason most people enjoy them, but the weather conditions of these zones also determine the kinds of activities they can offer. Rocky National Park says, “The high country of Rocky Mountain National Park is noted for extreme weather patterns. Shaped by elevation, slopes, and exposure, these patterns can change rapidly.” Snowboarding, snow surfing, mountain biking, and skiing are several types of activities people can enjoy when going to the mountains. There are many regions in our country that offer beautiful mountains for people to vacation at. The beaches offer three different reasons for people wanting to vacation there...

Indeed, it was a perfect vacation. It happened on the month of December year 2011. I was with my family and some family friends. In this tropical country we decided to go to Boracay—an Island cultured by different races. Back at 1950's I heard this place was a virgin paradise and only the natives was to benefit its beauty. At this time this place is the Philippines' most well known tourist attraction. Figure 1: Boracay Island (Copyright of TravellingInspiration) Geography When we got there as like any other places where you can take your vacation, we saw large hotels but around them were vegetation. It is like a hybrid of establishments and trees. It was beautiful to see. There is a region where I saw a mountain where hotels were at the slope of the hill. I came there at one of the Inns and the view outside was outstanding. I said to myself, "So this is how it feels like if you live at the edge of the cliff." It was beautiful! "Boracay Island’s shape is somewhat similar to a butterfly (See Figure 1 on page 3), which is appropriate for its beauty. In terms...

Best Vacation

...Best Vacation I Always Have Last year I had the best summer of my life, because I got to go on the vacation of my dreams again. We rented a bright blue Jeep, and headed to the beach in Destin, Florida for a week of extremely relaxing rolling waves, and very fine white sandy beaches. The first night there I was sitting by the blazing fire having a fruity adult beverage, and the sweet smell of the air reminded me of my childhood vacations to the Port Aransas beach in Texas with my parents over summer break from elementary school. I will never forget the outstanding memories I created with my parents on my childhood vacations. I could see the constant waves in the ocean from across the crowded beach, and I would always be so excited to step on the soft, white, sandy beach. As a young child, the first thing I would do is change into my one piece lacy swimsuit and run out to the beach. My cousins and I would spend the day splashing in the salty water, until we were too tired to keep our heads above the water. Then we would sit under our yellow umbrella on the soft damp sand and eat a bite of our favorite foods. It felt so good to have the bright sun blazing down on me. Our favorite thing to do was build the biggest sand castles on the beach. My cousins and I would have contests to see who could draw the best artwork in the sand. The grains of sand glistened in the sun like glitter on our newest handmade T-shirts. I will never forget how the gigantic boat would...

Venice

...years. It was going to be an absolutely wonderful vacation and it turned out that I would spend1 the most beautiful moments in my life there. Venice is my favorite vacation spot because its romance, entertainment, and its charming historical places. Venice is the best city to have romantic moments. The most romantic thing in my life was taking a gondola ride with my boyfriend through the canals of Venice. We were taking a walk in the evening, and suddenly I found myself in a gondola. It was his plan. The sun was setting as we passed through the old buildings. I felt that I was living in the 13th century. During the ride, we enjoyed the views of the historical Venice houses. The old houses which are both sides of the canals were the best. Also, our gondolier made that ride unforgettable for us with a bottle of wine. The gondolier did everything to ensure that our ride would never be forgotten. After that, it was very romantic to watch the stars above at the historical stone bridges on the canal, all the while being surrounded by live music. All these things make Venice the best choice for our romantic vacation. Venice is known as one of the best places for huge carnivals in Europe. “The Carnival of Venice” is the most popular carnival. We had not planned to attend this carnival. It started three days after we arrived. We were lucky to catch it. The carnival was fantastic! We danced and had fun until sun rise. Vacation

...The shadow of the palm trees reflecting on the soft sand at the beach side, while the waves of the beach are hitting the ground, is what makes this place so special. Just to imagine sitting at the beach while the palm trees are creating a shadow on my skin, and at the same time their branches are waving back and forth to provide a clear and clean breeze, is so relaxing. Therefore, I chose this State for my favorite vacation place. This alone that the nickname of the State is Sunshine State (en.wikipedia.org) shows a lot because that is what it is all about, a place to recognize the sun and its amazing features warming up the world to the joy of its people, making the climate so pleasant and relaxing. In fact, throughout the winter season, the climate is never below 60 degree and frost has never been reported there (www.statesymbolsusa.org). Furthermore, whenever I was there the sun always shone brightly comforting me with his strong sun rays, making it a place to escape from the cold New York during the freezing winter days. While strolling down the long and endless boardwalk, I got so inspired by its breathtaking sceneries. Starting from the beautiful beach view continuing to the white sand covered shore on one side, and on the other side many sky-high luxurious hotels each one with its amazing spa areas including incredible outdoor saunas and heated pools. Even after sunset the area does not lose its nice view since the colorful eye-catching lights take over by giving...

...solar ultraviolet radiation in textiles for summer clothing. The American Society of Photobiology, 90 (5). http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/php.12292. One of the most important tools needed for the protection against the solar ultraviolet radiation rays is a person's clothing. When a person goes outside, no thought is given about clothing and if it provide protect from the sun. There may be thoughts of going outside for a short period of time and that there is no need for concern about being out in the sun. An example, are bikers who ride motorcycles all year round and the majority are wearing sun protected clothing. The authors discuss how they can now analyze the fabric that a person is wearing and are able to put a label on clothing to signify if it is resistant to the sun. When examining the garments, the clothing is classified into different types of composition, which takes in to account the yarn and color. The fabric that can offer the best rating for ultraviolet protection is the knitted fabric, which is being used for sport T-shirts. Normal T-shirts show a very low rating when it comes to protection against the sun. Not all shirts have the labeling information in regards to ultraviolet protection, but it would be helpful for the consumer to have that information. Water Park

...Lashawn Mcdaniel Prof. L. Gertsma ENG 250 25 September 2015 The Water Park The Water Park in Dothan, Alabama was a great summer vacation for my family and I this summer. This vacation brought back memories of my childhood. That twelve-year-old girl still lives within me. The waterslide, wave pool and concession stands were exciting to me at the age twelve. At the age of thirty-nine my impression of the park was different because I had self-control, but the same excitement flowed heavily through my veins as my family and I enjoyed each festivity. I felt like a kid in the candy store as we enjoyed our family vacation in the city of Dothan. The fifteen feet yellow slide was scary and exciting all at the same time. At the age of twelve, getting on the slide for me was a challenge. I can remember my cousins and friends encouraging me to walk up the entry way to get on the slide. So this summer my husband and kids had urged me to walk up the entry way to the slide. The lifeguard instructed me on how to sit on the mat before pushing me down the slide. At the age of thirty-nine I felt my heart pounding and butterflies crawling in my stomach. I screamed with excitement. I did not use profanity or try to get off the mat that was underneath me this time, plunging into the water, with the lifeguard standing in the middle of the pool sent chills down my spine. I continued to repeat this activity over and over again. The excitement was overwhelming. The big, ocean blue...

A vacation can be divided into three groups such as: great scenery, good food, and great weather. For most people, the hardest part about a vacation is figuring out where to go. Niagra falls, for example, is an amazing place to visit. The scenery is breathttaking, everyone consider the visit at least once in their life time. The bahamas as well, is also a great place to visit when it comes to scenery. The water is a stunning deep blue that no other view can compare to. The weather is also mostly always warm and the sun is always shining. Nothing tops the great vacation list more than what you eat. Great food is a big part of a grerat vacation because you experience many different cultures that you may only have once in a life time to do.
