Jimmy Valentine was a burglar in the short-story A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry. After being released from prison, Jimmy traveled to the small town of Elmore, where he fell in love with and attempted to live an honest life. But in the end, Jimmy was forced to face his past when he had to crack open a safe to save someone's life. Based on the evidence O. Henry had provided, Jimmy Valentine was not truly dedicated to living a moral life because Jimmy acted way too cautious, had never truly quit robbing, and left his honest life fearing that everyone would find out he was a burglar. One reason why Jimmy Valentine was not truly dedicated to living a moral life was because he acted way too cautious during his stay in Elmore. An example from A Retrieved...

Signature _________________________________ Article Summary 1: Using Social Networking Sites for HR Decisions Webster University HRMG-5000 Spring 1 2015 January 19, 2015 The invention and popularity of the internet has created a whole new way for organizations to recruit quality employees. “Many people initially use social media more than job board sites to look for a job” (Mathis, Jackson, & Valentine, 2014, p. 195). This allows those searching for jobs the ability to look at more potential jobs in a shorter amount of time from the comfort of their home. Social networking through the internet allows human resources professionals to reach a greater number of prospective job candidates in almost real time. Many companies are beginning to use technology to their advantage in looking for, identifying and attracting talented job candidates (Mathis, Jackson, & Valentine, 2014). Just as social networking can benefit both job candidate and organization, there is also another side to using social networking from a human resources point of view. The article gives the scenario of an employee who works for ABC Company and is forced to work late one day. The employee sends out a “tweet” from his Twitter account that indicates how much he hates...

...Family Cultural Research Paper Ashley Ziemann WITC New Richmond Family Cultural Research Paper In Switzerland, there were very wealthy land owners. They were known as the Wipfli family. I did not realize that they were from royalty, I had always just known them as the Wipfli’s. They lived in the Wipfli castle containing 30 rooms, which was wsurrounded by a wall and a moat, which is still owned and occupied by present members of the family. Inside the castle at each of the four corners of the castle, there was a large dungeon. All the walls were covered by murals. There was a circular marble stairway that wound its way up in the middle of the building. On the stairs were the Stations of the Cross. The castle is noted for its one-half mile tunnel which leads from the castle, under the river and comes out to the next village where there was a lake. The purpose of the tunnel was to provide an escape during World War 2. It also has a summer house way up in the mountains where the family lived during long hot summers. My cousin, Kathi, has a painting of the summer house over her dining room fireplace. One of the original family’s sons fell in love with Josephine Van Albert, of the family of Prince Albert (on the tobacco can). They married against her families objections which was possible because the Wipfli’s were wealthier than the Van Albert’s, and they moved from England to Switzerland. Charlotte’s father promptly disowned her, thereby cutting her off all claim our family...

...College Comp 2 Research Paper Simply Masterful “Most of us would prefer to look at cartoons in a magazine than read a poem," says Kooser. Poetry reflects life in a way that even big movies, cannot do. Kooser’s poems invite the reader to reflect on everyday items and to notice the small details and beauties of the world. He has a talent to express emotions in a way that the readers themselves will experience. He has been referred to as the master of the short metaphorical poem (Gioia). Kooser has lived in Iowa and Nebraska all of his life. His decision to remain in the Midwest has resulted in a limited audience for his work, but Gioia concludes by observing that Kooser “has written more perfect poems than any poet of his generation” (Gioia). “Kooser wants a poetry anyone can read without shame and understand without labor, because he thinks poetry has too long been in the hands of poets who go out of their way to make their poems difficult if not downright discouraging” (Logan). Although many authors poetry is extremely hard to understand, Ted Kooser’s well-constructed poetic language and simple eloquent style, conveys a heartfelt message toward subjects like loved ones, everyday items, and rural America that are effortless to comprehend throughout his poetry as a result of his tone, imagery, personification, and the uncomplicated metaphors. Kooser has always been identified primarily as a poet. “While I was at work, I did everything that was required of me and kept getting...

...Diversity is an aspect of life that is almost inescapable, especially in the workplace. As we go about our daily lives, we are surrounded by people and cultures that differ from what was once considered the typical American lifestyle. There are endless options of food, music and social activities allowing us a small chance to experience and explore what life is like in other countries. Businesses are also recognizing the need and importance of diversity. Many have begun investing in diversity and inclusion as part of their overall management structures. To continually challenge their practice, organizations are striving to make the connection between those principles and their corporate performance (Chaney & Martin, 2014). This paper will explore some of the key issues regarding diversity in the US and India. Cultural variations, communication and management styles will be examined for a more in depth look at the ever changing corporate environment. Cultural Variations Carol Milano (2012) with ASME.org analyzes that in the United States, especially in large cities, a “time is money” attitude is common. Often working professionals appear to be in a rush, which gives the impression that Americans tend to get down to business rather quickly. Many countries have a different perspective and work ethic, where people are not in such a hurry. They may prefer to get to know a colleague before they start working together, which reiterates the fact that teamwork is an area rich...

...Research Plan Rachel H. Johnson 504-699-5901 March 25, 2014 Research Proposal 1. Research Topic Introduction The purpose of my research topic Is descriptive .My descriptive research will allow me to identify and obtain information on social media and how it affects our youths. The research question I wish to answer is: Are children under the age of 18 mature enough to have unrestricted access to social media: As a community, how can we better protect our children who use social media? I have chosen this topic partly as a result of my interest in how we as a country are evolving so quickly with technology, but our children values and morals seem to be diminishing even quicker and social media has giving them the platform . Additionally, I recently was very disturbed when I viewed a program on Dr. Phil which profiled several families that were mourning the loss of their children and how the reckless use of social media was a culprit in the scheme of it all. I was intrigued by how the use of something so easily available, like social media, could cause a child to engage in risky behaviors or even kill oneself. When I was growing up, technology of a landline was a privilege in some homes and we only used it for educational purpose. Because there are so many children who use social media, I wanted to further investigate the pros and cons of it, so that whatever position I chose, it would be an informed one. 2. Current Review of Literature The advancement...

...Research Paper Al “Scarface” Capone was the ultimate american gangster. Not only did he run the streets by the time he was 15, Capone ran all of Chicago for multiple years by the time he was 30 (Chicago Historical Society 1). In 1929, what is known as Chicago’s most brutal day, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre occurred when Capone’s rival gang was murdered because he had one goal and that goal was to run the streets, just as he did (History Channel 1). While the feds were hot and heavy on him, Capone fled to Florida to lay low for a bit. When he was at his highest point of control of most of the country he was making close to $100,000,000 a year. While going back and forth from Florida to Chicago, Capone had up to 5 gangster headquarters. Once the police started to catch on to his case, they decided to give Al “Scarface” Capone a new nickname, “Public enemy number one” (History Channel 1). Capone had a wild childhood. He was born in January of 1899 in a small house in Brooklyn, New York (Chicago historical Society 1). By the time Al Capone was 15 he was brought up from the “kids gangs” (Chicago Historical Society 1) into the notorious Five Points Gang by Frankie Yale in 1916. Capone had a couple jobs as a bouncer and a bartender at Frankie Yales’ gangster dive bars and the Harvard Inn. While working at the Harvard Inn, Capone acquired the nickname “Scarface” because of an incident when a girlfriends brother of his beat him up and the name stuck ever since. Al Capone’s...

...play his trumpet until the day he died. Miles went on tour and reached out to his fans through interviews and public appearances, something Miles would have never done in his younger days, the evolution of Miles is truly amazing. After 65 long years, Miles Davis rested in peace. He left over 120 recordings and a legacy in the music of Jazz that will never be forgotten or replaced. Davis left an image that probably no Jazz musician will be able to live up to. Learning about Miles Davis' life was just as interesting as evaluating one of his famous record albums. I chose the very ironic title Miles To Go and it was soothing to hear. In this album you will find the following songs: So What, 'Round Midnight, Back Seat Betty and My Funky Valentine. The first three songs start off very slow and romantic, good for a candle light dinner with one from the opposite sex song by the title of So What. The two major instruments heard in this piece are of course the trumpet, played by Miles Davis and Bill Evans on the piano. Also making an appearance on this song are "Cannonball" Adderley the alto saxophonist and James Cobb on the drums. Although not danceable, this song sets a nice, relaxing tone that soothes every part of your body throughout its long lasting nine and a half minutes. This song is taken from the album "Kind of Blue" mentioned earlier. Towards the end of the tune I noticed that he began to play a familiar tune comforting to the ear. As we move on the next tune is...

...revolutionize life in the United States of America, and will affect the entire world population over time. Boldness, inevitability, and adaptability all led, or will lead, to the development of this issue. First, the paper will discuss how boldness, and only boldness, leads to accomplishments and boon. To succumb passively will not help achieve goals. Second, the paper will discuss the inevitability that technologies will advance due to human desire and how the want for profit is slaked. Lastly, the paper will cover how the world adapts to changing lifestyles and learn to utilize daunting revelations. It is unavoidable that society will advance, as it has done in the past, and humans will adapt to the changing life as known for decades. The book, Stranger in a Strange Land, written by Robert A. Heinland, as well as many other resourceful documents and sources, will assist in proving these points. Every person always seems to want the latest technology. This truth has existed for centuries and will never change in the future. With the invention of shovels, people wanted them because it was easier than digging with their hands. When cell phones were invented, people sought this new form of communication-on-the-go. When, in the book Stranger in a Strange Land, Valentine Michael Smith finds ways to levitate objects and make things disappear while standing twenty feet away, it is not a surprise that people become interested. Future technologies will revolutionize life in the United...
