He left them together all night without supplying River with anyone to drink, to allow a little bit of hunger to cloud River’s judgement; he must fully test his theory if he was to trust that River would not kill Shadow. The following day; to Valentine’s surprise Shadow was still alive, not only was he alive, he was standing over River’s sleeping body guarding it. Valentine walked closer and heard Shadow growl at him in warning to stay back.

One night while hunting one of the Vampires was beheaded by a rancher’s machete. Valentine shed a tear as he discovered that his Vampires could be killed if beheaded. Three days later the Servant that was blood bounded to that Vampire had perished, --- turned to dust on the cell floor. This saddened Saint Valentine and he realized he must come up with a way to allow his Vampires to flourish. He started out to create a mate for his Vampires. Though the process was quite tedious, nevertheless it was successful beyond his wildest dreams.
There had been rumors that fays lived in the woods, thus Valentine set out to find the truth. He had spent days watching and waiting, sitting-up and checking traps, until the one day his trap had something in it. It was a fay he was delighted with this new discovery. She was a beautiful little fay with gorgeous wings, however; he found it peculiar that she could not fly. Her body was covered in glowing tattoos. He had planned to mix the blood of this Fay with his new serum, and then add the blood of each Vampire to blood-bond them to the females. He watched him closely every night waiting for an error to occur allowing him the opportunity to grab the keys from his strap. River wanted to follow Saint Valentine to observe what he was doing.
