Sidenblad Bee Cave Police Department Bee Cave, Texas Date Submitted (month year) ABSTRACT Law enforcement continues to move in the direction of a profession and away from being only a vocation. Police officers of today are better trained and educated than at any time in the past. This demands police leaders be up to the challenge to lead them. Law enforcement leaders must enhance their knowledge and incorporate training ideas in use by other professions. Applying lessons from academic subject material is an important part of leadership development in many professions, and should be emphasized in training future police leaders. This will enable law enforcement leaders to develop as leaders in a profession. One academic subject used in other professions to develop leaders is the study of history. History provides a wealth of material from which valuable insights and examples of leadership may be drawn from. Lessons drawn from history are used by other professions to enhance the quality of leadership within those professions. Leadership lessons from history should be incorporated into modern police leadership training. Material...

After completing four years of schooling there, I will seek my commission as an officer in the Navy. ...his past failures. Moses focused on his past and he did not think that he was capable of carrying out the task the God asked of him. He started making all excuses of why he couldn’t but God let him know that no matter what you have done or where you came from I still can use you so that I may be glorified. I am God who specializes in hard cases. As Moses relationship and love grew for God, he yielded himself to God trusting him God’s direction for leading the children of Israel out of bondage into freedom. God was with Moses every step of the way. God sustained the children of Israel by feeding, clothing, and protecting them as they wandered around in the wilderness for forty years. Moses had a very big responsibility dealing with the children of Israel he maintained his trust and faith in God while intervening and pleading with God not to destroy those hard head folks. God entrusted Moses with the ten commandments the law for them to obey. Moses lead them to the Promise Land but because of one act disobedience God would not allow him enter into the Promise Land but allowed him to view it from a distance. I admire Moses life, the relationship, love, and trust he had for God as a leader. As a leader it is hard because we go through, put up with all types of people, and if not careful can fall short of what God has endeavored for us to do. I have been tested and tried on every side, yet I love, trust, obey God, and keep my focus on my assignment. Getting over my past and...

...This excerpt from the poem tells of a grown man reminiscing back to days of childhood innocence, back to the days of being told that the only thing that matters is that he is happy. But then says that after all of that David Kirby says that as he grows he learnt how cruel and sad love is, as well as all lives must come to an end, and sadness is inevitable. These are valuable lessons about how sick and twisted the real world is which are learned as someone grows up from a child to an adult. These same lessons are Taught to Jean Louise “Scout” Finch throughout the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. The entire book itself is Scout looking back at joyfull, innocent, and fun childhood memories as well as events that brought upon sadness that also taught lessons important lessons on the sadness that the real world brings. The Tom Robinson case in particular taught Scout how how unfair life is and the outcome of the case showed them that there are many things in life that bring sadness. Those things can be the unfair treatment of African Americans or how many people will be affected by the outcome of the case, like Tom’s wife and kids. Ultimately both Scout and David Kirby both look back at fond moments of their innocent childhood and how their coming of age taught them important lessons on how realistic and sad the real world is....

...Journal 6 Trauma and Memory Brain in a Search for the Living Past written by Peter Levine is a fascinating book that explains the fluidity of memories combined with the different ways in which they are stored. I enjoy that it is well written incorporating science in an easy to read manner. He highlights the reconstructive process stating that it is continuously adding, deleting, rearranging, and updating information. Understanding that memory is not concrete is extremely important to a counselor. Comprehending that our mood at the time of the event effects how the memory is stored increases our understanding of our clients when they relay details of the past. Helpful memories are ones we learn from and move on. Ordinary memories change over time. Traumatic memories are static. Realizing that there are explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) memories were valuable because we must remember that the body knows what happened even if the client cannot remember the event consciously. This will help us to understand why a client may be reacting abnormally to certain situations. It allows us to hypothesis are they reacting to smells, touch, visual or sounds. We can then ask the client questions that may assist them to clarify. When you feel anxiety what do you notice? Is there a smell? What does the environment look like? Is there...

...Past lovers Dawson Cole (James Marsden) and Amanda Collier (Michelle Monaghan) are taken down memory lane in The Best of Me when they return home after the passing of a dear friend. They are forced to face not only each other but their past demons. I consider The Best of Me to be the most pragmatic movie I have seen. The film does use the common rich girl falls in love with a poor boy approach, but the events that take place after they meet aren't your classic Hollywood love story scenario, they allow the film to be relatable to a broad audience. The film transitions from the present to the past using flashbacks. You see the memories of Young Dawson (Luke Bracey) and Young Amanda (Liana Liberato). The flashbacks help show the audience how each character became the present version of themselves in detail. For many people, it would have been easier to understand if they had started the film with the younger characters then progressed to the older characters. I suspect the way the movie altered back and forth was to help maintain the audience interest in the film, by disabling their ability to know what was going to happen next like in many other popular love stories. The timeline of the movie is only one of my favorite things. I mostly enjoyed all...

...I spent four of the past five years of my life in high school and I learned so many lessons in those years. I learned that I actually had to pay attention in class because high school was different from middle school. I also learned to watch what I said to who because rumors and gossip happen very easily. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned over the past five years though would be to watch who I pick as my friends. The friends I had in middle school were not the same ones that I had in high school. I grew away from the people I had known for nine years and became best friends with strangers, one of which is still a very good friend to me today. I have trusted her so much and have never been happier to have her in my life. Every time my...

...I had expected to be familiar with much of what was shared over the course of Kelley Connect week, given that I had already completed two terms before attending & had a business background from my undergraduate education. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how many different topics were dissected during the classroom sessions, and at how strong a foundation these classes would provide in such a limited amount of time. Being able to instantly apply this foundation during our extensive group sessions furthered my understanding of these new concepts, and will allow me to continue to expand my knowledge base and apply them during the course of my career. One of the most valuable lessons I learned during the classroom sessions related to decision...

...Entrepreneurship Module 7 John Smith MGT500 Aug 06, 2011 Essay Questions: Google Case Study 1. Do you think Google will be able to maintain its entrepreneurial culture in spite of its recent growth and increased size? Why or why not? It appears that Google will maintain its entrepreneurial spirit at least for the foreseeable future. Google now employs over 28,000 people around the globe and as of February this year, maintained a market share of 65.6% in the search engine industry (Kell, 2011). On top of this their additional product lines are impacting the market on global scale such as Gmail and Google Maps, making Google a major player in the technology sector. However, even with all explosive growth, Google recently confirmed its desire to maintain its entrepreneurial roots. As stated by Google CFO Patrick Pichette, “With scale there always becomes this tension of how do you keep the start-up philosophy, we don't want to lose our start-up philosophy" (Millman 2011). The question then becomes not do you want to remain entrepreneurial, but rather how do you maintain it. When the size of an organization reaches 28,000 it is inevitable that a more bureaucratic model becomes necessary to maintain organized operations. With bureaucracy and the stability it brings, innovation and flexibility tend to suffer. However, Google has proven it can maintain and grow revenues even while it aggressively expands the size of its operation. This is demonstrated by Google...

...fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” It may be a bit of a stretch to say everyone in the English speaking world knows what movie that quote is from, but it’s not that long of one. Since its 1986 release “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has become an American classic, and its late director John Hughes became a king in the teen movie genre. Hughes wrote countless classic ’80s films, such as “Pretty in Pink,” the first two “Home Alone” films, “Christmas Vacation” and “Flubber.” The man penned some classic one-liners and also wrote quite a few life lessons into his films. That spurs the question — what other films from the 1980s include valuable life lessons? Yes, the ’80s are the butt of all decade jokes, but where would America be without those crucial 10 years of big ugly hair, heavy eye makeup and leg warmers? No matter the fashion, people were still people in the ’80s, and there’s always something to be gleaned from the past. We’ll examine life lessons taught to us by several films from the ’80s; “The Breakfast Club,” “Pretty in Pink,” “Back to the Future,” “Heathers” and (how could we not?) “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Unknown-3 You never know what kind of friends you’ll make in detention. Photo from IMDb. “The Breakfast Club:” One of the most important lessons in “The Breakfast Club” is to not judge someone based on first impressions. Did anyone honestly expect a beauty queen and a rebel to fall for each other? How about a jock and a basket...

...The Lesson Since the start of slavery there has been a large problem with poverty, equality, and social class with Caucasians and African Americans. African Americans have been through a rough past, for the most part they are generally looked down upon, and are said to be of lower class. They are the same people as you and I, but not in everyone’s eyes. In “The Lesson”, by Toni Cade Bambara, Miss Moore takes on the roll as the children’s teacher, or in other words their instructor. The one thing Miss Moore wanted out of all of it, was to teach the kids a lesson. She wanted the children to know that they need to be goal oriented and work hard in everything that they do, and that education will lead you to success no matter who you are, or where you come from. She wanted them to know that the race they were wasn’t going to change who they would be in the future, or lower their chances of success, because you can do anything when you work hard and set your mind to something....
