In conceptualizing a business plan and understanding the value alignment with a company and an individual, Team A has selected Johnson and Johnson (J&J). Team A will analyze the values of each team member and how his or her values compare to the values of Johnson and Johnson. Enclosed below is an outline of subsequent evolution values and action alignment between plans and actions. Team A has reflected the degree of differences in individual values versus J&J stated values.
Origins of Personal and Workplace Values
A person’s values derive from family, friends, and life experiences shaping each individual’s perspective. Values are “a person’s principles or standards of behavior; or judgment of what is important in life” (Definition of Value, 2012, p. 1). The values each individual in Team A may differ in some form but to become a team the individuals must come to an agreement about a single set of values. Individual values are instilled through those closest such as family, friends, and mentors. As the person grows older and wiser these values sets him or her apart from others around them; although all share a set of common values. Similar to Team A corporations must have a foundation that guides the company and at the same time communicate to employees and the public the company’s vision and mission.
Explain how your team values drive its actions and behaviors
Team A’s values are important because they set us apart from other teams. In the academic setting Team A’s values are on time completion of assignments, quality workmanship, accountability, credibility, dependability, and integrity. Each of these values drive Team A’s action and behaviors, for example Team A sets a weekly deadline for the completion of individual parts of the team assignment because it values the completion of every assignment. Doing so aids the team in receiving the best grade possible. Team A also requires that each member research and use creditable sources for his or her individual part of the team assignments. This is vital because University of Phoenix requires students to use academic resources in all assignments. Team A’s values drive the team to complete quality work through research, communication, and collaboration. Team members participate in weekly conference calls to discuss and revise weekly assignments and to practice or construct presentations. It is essential to adapt team values into productive actions because they direct team goals and ultimately drives results.
J&J states the company’s values through their Credo. The Credo states what the company values and priorities are. J&J guiding principles were developed through the principle to develop products that serve the best interest of their customers. The credo was developed by one of the founding chairmen Rober Wood Johnson, in 1943 (Johnson & Johnson, 2012). The Credo states the company’s responsibilities, standards, how the employees are expected to interact with suppliers, as well as the expectations of each employee. J&J states that people and values are the greatest assets, and it affirms it through their vision and mission statement. The company’s vision is “To maximize the global power of diversity and inclusion to drive superior business results and sustainable competitive advantage” (Johnson & Johnson, 2012, p. 1). The mission is “To embed diversity and inclusion into our business to drive innovation and growth ensuring we better serve patients, customers, employees, and our communities” (Johnson & Johnson, 2012, p. 1). The approach J&J takes to reach their goal is by advocating diversity and employing people who complement the company’s core values. Though a company’s core values may change over time, similar to individuals J&J’s credo remains the same.
Alignment between Stated Values and Actual Plans
J&J stated value is credo. Credo has many stated values which are segmented into four buckets customers, employees, communities, and stockholders. Within the buckets are key factors that drive credo. The first segment is customer. The key driving factor in customer is focus in making high quality product at a reasonable price (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). The second key factor is focused on employees to promote respect, reorganization, and ethics (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). The third factor is focused on the community by protecting the environment and natural resources (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). The fourth factor is focused on stockholders values regarding sound profit, innovative, and product launch (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). Team A has analyzed J&J’s annual report to understand the alignment between the organizations stated values versus their actual plans and actions. In the company’s annual report their strategies and key initiatives are to grow in human health care, development of high quality products, product innovation, and service offering (2011annualreport/pdf/JNJ-2011. n.d.). Throughout the report are findings of these four key strategies and initiatives, which clearly align with their stated values. J&J’s management lives and makes decisions off credo. The company is commitment to the importance of credo a key factor in J&J’s success and long-term growth.
Differences and Alignment of Values and Plans
Similarities and differences exist between the values, plans, and actions of J&J compared to the values of Team A. The level of importance J&J places on treating employees with respect and being ethical in the decisions upper management makes is of equal importance to the values of Team A ( JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). Treating employees in a fair and consistence manner is important as the employees are those who interact with the consumers. Employees are also those who implement the strategies that make the company successful. The focus of increasing profit, innovation and being the first to market new products is important to J&J and Team A (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). Plans to develop products that are innovative and industry leading will give J&J a competitive advantage, which enables J&J to fulfill the promise to their stakeholders (JNJ_Ourcredo. n.d.). Team A believes that J&J should place a higher importance on treating consumers with respect and meeting consumer needs. Focusing solely on providing customers with products of high quality at reasonable prices could not be sustained if consumers are not fully satisfied. If consumers are satisfied they will continue to use J&J products within their lives daily. Team A is aligned to the J&J’s focus of protecting the environment and natural resources but believe J&J should place an importance on supporting non-profit-organizations within communities. The values, plans, and actions of J&J will shape the reputation one has of the company and its financial success.
In conclusion Team A has analyzed the evolution of each individual’s values versus the values of J&J. Each individual has analyzed their values and how he or she aligns with his or her behavior and actions. Team A clearly stated the alignment between credo and J&J’s actual plans and actions. In analyzing the differences between values, Team A concludes values on both sides are aligned.
