In the production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, I feel the play had a tone of loneliness as each of the siblings seem to be going through their own aging problems and how they deal with that problem and each of the actors and actresses did a spectacular job in playing their specific character. The set looked really nice and clean and had a setting of a home that would maybe have been around for many years as the siblings did experience their childhood in this house. Their certain childhood memories as stated throughout the play, made the house feel like the one and only place they could come back to as they went on with their lives. I felt that the sound effects in the background were alright in some instances and not in others. For example, at the beginning of the play when Sonia throws the coffee cups offset, the sound effect there was good because the impact happened off stage which really tied that action together. Whereas when the phone rang in the living room, hearing the actual ringtone offstage kind of threw me off, but that’s just me. The costumes looked really nice as each described the character and you could probably figure out the age of each character. Vanya’s actor looked like he played the part very well with his gown/cardigan looking cloth with the crocs to show he is an old man in his 50s and much of his life has gone by. He is a very calm and collected man (at least until close to the end of the play) when his sisters start to argue over various things throughout the play. He is a man who fights for what he believes in. Although he was getting older, he wanted to stay in the past with all his experiences from the past. He was never really a sucker for the new futuristic world which really said a lot about his character when he gains the confidence and shows everyone his play.
