VARK Analysis Paper
VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences (vark-learn.com, n.d., para. 1). Learning styles or preferences can be defined “as the complex manner in which, and conditions in which, learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store, and recall what they are attempting to learn” (Crannell & Martinez Witte, 2012, p. 2). These preferences then can be used as an advantage to knowing ways to receive and give information. VARK signifies the learning preferences of visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. The VARK questionnaire was developed by Neil D. Fleming to make people aware of the variety of different styles to learning. The questionnaire has 16 simple questions that assist to identify the four categories of learning style. Some people may have two or three learning styles fitting them into the category of multimodal. Approximately 60% of any population fits into this category (vark-learn.com, n.d., para 1). The multimodal learner is able to have the flexibility to adapt to different styles of learning or use their styles in a combination approach to learning. So, depending on the instructor, teaching mode, and learning setting, the multimodal learner is able to identify when to shift between learning styles.
The visual learner prefers to use pictures, posters, slides, colors, and diagrams to organize information and communicate with others. Visual learners can read body language well and prefers to make eye contact when communicating. Visual learners are able to memorize and recall information, tend to remember things that are written down, have a good sense of direction, and learn well in lectures by watching. Visual learners can maximize their learning by turning notes into pictures, charts, or maps. Using flash cards, color-coding, and avoiding distractions are also effective methods to the visual learner.
The aural learner retains information through hearing and speaking, group discussion, and participating in class discussions. Aural learners are great at explaining ideas, story telling, and listening to directions. Aural learners will find using a tape recorder during lectures and to tape their notes very helpful when it comes to learning.
The read/write learner prefers to learn with lists, PowerPoint, dictionaries, notes, essays, or manuals. The read/write learner often comprehends and remembers what they have read and enjoy writing. Re-writing lecture notes and reading them silently again and again, using colored pens and highlighters to focus on key ideas expand learning. Using word games, such as hangman or vocab mnemonics, lists, and handouts are a strong learning strategy for the read/write learner.
The kinesthetic learner prefers to learn by doing. They prefer real-life experiences and hands on activities to retain information. They are usually good at sports, take breaks when studying, and can be fidgety during lectures. Useful strategies to help with learning are studying in short blocks, studying with others, using memory games, or correlating ideas or terms with physical movements.
This writer used the VARK analysis questionnaire to determine her learning style. The results were, visual-8, aural-10, read/write-12, and kinesthetic-7. The results of the questionnaire are that this writer is a multimodal learner. This writer agrees with the results. This writer prefers to use learning strategies such as, reading and writing (read/write) and watching a demonstration (visual) while someone explains (aural) and then conducting the same demonstration (kinesthetic). Reading material, highlighting, and taking notes is the best preference. Having books in print is preferable, that way she can physically highlight the key concepts, and later reinforce by making notes. But being a multimodal learner, this writer has adjusted to the group discussion forums, listening (aural) to the chapters on her computer, while highlighting, and taking notes.
Having the awareness of the preferred learning styles and strategies is essential to identifying the strengths and weaknesses in the learner and the teacher. The benefits to the learner are maximizing learning potentials, helping in making decisions, improving problem-solving skills, reduce frustration and increase confidence. The benefits to the teacher are the knowledge of the various types to implement in the teaching techniques to give all learners the best chance to succeed.
With this knowledge, nurses are able to apply these learning styles and techniques to healthcare education. As stated, there will be many learning styles in a group audience; therefore the nurse varies the teaching methods used in a given session (Edelman 225). This will aid nurses in delivering information to patients in a way that will have positive outcomes in their understanding and attitude about their health.
