THE VARK QUESTIONNAIRE

INTRODUCTION: VARK is a questionnaire that provides people with profiles of their learning preferences in forms of various learning techniques. The VARK acronym stands for four categories of learning preferences. The “V” stands for the visual learning strategy, the “A” stands for the aural learning strategy, the “R” stands for the reading or writing strategy, and the “K” stands for the kinesthetic learning strategy. (Fleming, 2011). To be more specific, it helps people understand how they learn and what they should do to help them hold the information that they are being taught, in simpler terms, how people can receive and provide information. It is now widely used and commonly known to be used in business as well as for educational purposes.

LEARNING PREFERENCES: Learning preference (or learning style) is the way you tend to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information. Some of the learning strategies are: • Visual: Learning through seeing. • Auditory: Learning through hearing. • Reading and Writing: Learning through reading and writing. • Kinesthetic: Learning through moving, doing, touching etc. • Multimodal: Learning through a combination of two or three types of learning styles.

The concept of learning styles depends upon a range of factors and there is no single theory to explain this. They are known variously as "thinking styles", "cognitive styles", and learning modalities. (Casakin, 2012).

DETERMINING PREFERRED LEARNING STYLE: The VARK scores helps to determine the preferred learning strategy of an individual. In the reflection of the VARK scores if a person fits into the Reading and Writing Style, the most preferred steps of learning would be: • Reading the information. •
