VARK Analysis
One of the most common models of learning styles is VARK, which was developed by Neil Fleming initially in 1987. Learning styles in the VARK model are broken down into four categories, which is what VARK stands for: visual, aural/auditory, read/writing and kinesthetic (Kagan, 2010, p.26). VARK is a questionnaire which asks sixteen questions that provides users with a profile of their individual learning styles. There are many theories on thinking and learning and that students all learn in different ways and it is believed by teachers that students will learn more quickly and easily if they were aware and able to utilize their preferred style (Robertson, Smellie, Wilson, Cox, 2011). Everyone has different ways of learning, from how we take in that information, process and recall it. This paper will discuss the writers individual learning styles and discuss different learning modalities.
This nursing students learning style is multimodal based on the results of the questionnaire. The results were VAR, which stands for visual, aural/auditory and reading and writing. This type of learning style gives three choices to use for learning and interaction with others and this type has multiple preferences which is found in about 60% of the population. Multimodal means that a person has multiple strong points in areas such as reading, writing and aural and can choose a certain mode to suit their current situation. In the past this author has mostly used reading and writing and visual aids to learn, based on the VARK analysis and now have incorporated aural/auditory in to her style of learning.

One subject who took the “VARK Questionnaire, How Do I Learn Best?” learned the results were Aural and Kinesthetic “AK”, a multimodal learning style preference.
