Greek biographer, Plutarch once said, “A human body in no way resembles those that were born for ravenousness; it hath no hawk’s bill, no sharp talon, no roughness of teeth, no such strength of stomach or heat of digestion, as can be sufficient to convert or alter such heavy and fleshy fare.” This message from Plutarch rings true to all of humankind. Humans are born with brittle fingernails, blunt teeth, and a stomach that cannot digest raw meat. All of those are signs lead many to the belief that a vegan diet is more suitable for consumption among humans. Countless debates battle back and forth on whether or not it is a sustainable or healthy lifestyle, yet a plethora of research backs up the claim. Earth is a four and a half billion year old planet, and the farming industry is endlessly contributing to unnatural land degradation. Livestock production plays a major role in overwhelmingly fast deforestation, and farmers have permanently disrupted the delicate ecosystems because of it. According to the article, “Environmental Destruction,” seventy percent of forested land in the Amazon rainforest has been turned into pastures for cattle to feed on. The damage is due to the costly actions of humans, and humans are the only ones who can attempt to heal the destruction. According to National Geographic, scientists have predicted that by 2048, the oceans will run out of fish. This is quite alarming, yet there is nothing being done about it. If the oceans no longer have fish, it will set off a negative chain reaction in the entire aquatic ecosystem. Not only will it harm the oceans, but it will carry those negative effects onto land and into the atmosphere. Without the specific niches of the fish in the ocean, the balance of nature will be greatly offset. Now, this is only if the world continues to fish at the current rate that it is. Fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes are all acceptable foods to eat, and they all come from the earth. Vegans avoid all kinds of meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and any animal products in general. This diet is plant based; therefore, there are a plethora of vitamins and minerals in the foods that can be eaten. These extra nutrients contribute to the positivity and energy that veganism brings to the table. Pun intended. According to The Huffington Post, research shows that vegans have been proven to have a lower risk of cancer as compared to those who eat meat, or even those who are simply vegetarians but still eat animal products such as dairy. It’s not just a mere coincidence that foods that have been proven to reduce the risk of cancer are all accepted vegan foods, it is evidence. Along with reduced risk of cancer, cleared acne, lowered rate of heart disease, higher energy levels, and lowered level of body fat are all known benefits of eating a balanced and plant based diet. According to Medical News Today, the number one leading cause of death in the world is heart disease. In 2014, heart disease made up over twenty three percent of deaths in the United States.
