Vegetarianism

...Vegetarianism Vegetarianism is defined as the life choice of not consuming any meat, poultry, or fish. Those who practice the acts of being a vegetarian eat mostly fruits, nuts, vegetables, and grains. Many vegetarians aren’t opposed to consuming eggs and other dairy and/or other dairy products. Some people choose vegetarianism because they think eating meat is cruel or unethical. They believe that if humans have the option to avoid meat, and still be healthy, then animals are being killed out of selfishness. The majority of people are omnivorous, which means that their diet consists of both plant and animal origins. Most omnivorous people believe that eating meat is not cruel or unethical/unnatural, and that it is a natural cycle of life. Another argument between both sides is whether the human body was made for the consumption of meat or not. The anatomy of a human has evolved to that of a vegetarian. We do not have the carnivorous teeth or large mouths; instead, we’ve developed rounded, flat teeth that are used for chewing more fibrous food. On the other hand, with the large number of omnivores, the human taste buds have come to crave the flavor of meat. But, that is because people have been consuming meat for 2.3 million years. Being vegetarian or omnivorous both have their health benefits, but meat is not a necessity. Vegetarianism has been proven to deliver complete nutritional benefits Eating meat provides healthy vitamins which are proven to boost the human body’s...

Vegetarian Diet vs. Omnivorous Diet

...Once it is carefully and properly planned out, of course. In fact the design of a human’s intestinal tract, being long and all places homo-sapiens more in the category of herbivorous than carnivorous. As longer intestines allow herbivores more time to break down and assimilate tough-to-break-down plant fiber (Walker, 2006). A diet absent of meat can prove to be more advantageous than the contrary; as it consists of lower levels of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol which allows for a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure; and diabetes. Such a diet can also be more cost effective in certain countries and provide an idea of being morally right. One of the major issues regarding health today, especially in America is the vast amount of people that fall into the obese category. In fact, more than one third of U.S. adults—more than 72 million—people and 17% of U.S. children are obese (The...

...1. In America, it would be important to increase sex education classes and have them provided in middle school. These classes should also address the current average costs of raising a child from birth to age 18, to encourage full awareness of what is involved. Birth control education is critical to controlling population. It is hard to envision the China rule becoming reality here, as it would be a violation of one's constitutional rights. Obviously, with time, certain social and natural factors may affect population, including war and feared new plagues or viruses. But these things (calamities) do unfortunately affect population. 2. I was born and raised in Pinellas County. Since 2000, the Pinellas County population has increased from approximately 900,000 to just under a million by 2010. Today, Pinellas County's population continues to grow. There has been of course ongoing development but residentially the County is and has been "built out" for some time. The real estate crash of 2008 halted new development substantially but that trend seems to be slowly reversing now. The racial and ethnic profile of Pinellas has not changed dramatically; however, consistent with most Florida counties, the Hispanic population does continue to increase among the general population. The community's social problems (crime, homelessness) have remained constant and the unemployment rate seems linked more so to the national economy than local community issues. Unemployment remains...

...Environmental Ethics Environmental ethics is that branch of philosophy dealing with the major ethical questions regarding the relationships between humans and the environment. This includes issues such as biodiversity, wildlife management, ecological preservation, hunting practices, farming techniques, and food regulations. Emergence of the Field Environmental ethics emerged as a distinct field in in early 1970s. Among its driving forces were the environmental concerns regarding the dependability of our society on natural resources as well as the threat that our use of those resources poses to the integrity of the ecosystem; it should also be noted that the increased attention to an ecological perspective on life was promoted also by the prospect of exploring life on other planets. It should be noted that around the same period a cognate field was also developed: philosophy of biology. In the 70s, in other words, our theoretical perspective on life was deeply transformed and has led to movements such as the green revolution and the contemporary quest for sustainable living. Retrospectively, the emergence of those fields seems almost obvious. A Non-Anthropocentric Philosophy? Although environmental ethicist have applied ethical theories – such as consequentialism – to try and solve environmental concerns, the specificity of environmental problems facilitated the development of some novel ethical perspectives; an example of this is the non-anthropocentric...

The Different Types of Vegetarians

...Vegetarianism doesn’t always mean no meat, no poultry, no dairy, no fish, and no seafood; there are different types of vegetarians and each type has different food restrictions. There can be confusion regarding vegetarianism, the lifestyle a vegetarian lives and the diet they follow. Some people may wonder what vegetarians eat, what they do not eat, and how they stay healthy and survive without the proteins and nutrients from meat and other animal products. Since there is more than one type of vegetarian there is no clear answer for the questions of what they eat, what they avoid and how they stay healthy; because each type of vegetarian follows different guidelines in their life which gives them different choices of items to consume. Some types of vegetarians eat meat and animal by-products; others may avoid meat but consume some animal by-products, while others may be more restrictive in their diet and avoid any types of meat and animal by-products. Regardless of the type of vegetarian an individual is every type follows the same main diet which focuses on large amounts of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, healthy and whole grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Vegetarians fill their diets with protein packed grains such as quinoa, couscous, bulgur wheat, barley, and brown rice; they also ensure that they receive large amounts of proteins by eating large servings of legumes such as beans, lentils, and chick peas, to substitute for missing the proteins for restricted or limited...

Meat Without Guilt of Ethics

...Meat without Guilt of Ethics Jessica Paxton Devry University America today has developed a unique relationship with meat. They love meat because it is part of everyday life, but they have guilt about the process the meat has been thru to get to them. Meat in America goes through slaughterhouses that have been called into question more and more. Slaughterhouses stop many people from eating meat because of guilt, but changing the process by; first reevaluating the ethical treatment the animals go through, secondly meat needs to not have a sense of guilt come with it, then change the assembly line process when killing the animals, and finally reverting back to hunting animals for just what we need. First, slaughterhouses need to be reevaluated for the ethical treatment of how the animals are killed. There are rules that they slaughterhouses are supposed to abide by both ethical and legal. However, there are many situations where those rules are being broken, but nothing is really being done about it. There was one instance where PETA came in and found that one slaughterhouse was treating the animals with cruelty when they investigated. http://www.peta.org/features/Agriprocessors.aspx http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/news-slaughterhouse-cruelity-humane-death-myth In this specific case it shows how animals are inhumanely stored to be slaughtered. These companies plead guilty to 10 counts of animal cruelty after the investigation was over. They had been killing animals...

Surprisingly, every quarter pound of hamburger meat that someone consumes destroys 60 square feet of rainforest. Rainforest everywhere are already being demolished in the first place. The reason is because a lot of the cattle consumed in the United States have been bulked and fattened up and raised in past rainforest that was transformed to grazing grounds. In truth, more than one half of rainforest destruction has been from animal grazing. Other than the ruining of rain forest, more than 50% of all water supplies go toward livestock production. Eating Meat Ethics

...Has there ever been a time in your life were you question if your truly right minded by eating and/or enjoying meat? Knowing that you have contributed to the slaughter of an innocent animal all because of your self-centered desires? Then your most likely a righteous person.I know i've certainly asked the question before, but what is truly the best answer? In my opinion the best choice is that eating meat is totally ethical. First of all, eating meat is very common in nature,it's seen just about everywhere.Creatures that eat meat, carnivores, have the raw instinct to eat other animals. These creatures include coyotes, ferrets, weasels, lions, bobcats, hyenas and many other species. Some of which eat the exact same things we eat,for example, wolves and grizzly bears eat cows and chickens are eaten by bobcats, raccoons and foxes.Although animals do eat other animals it doesn't humans should do the same.People have demonstrated that you can live a life without eating meat but it isn't as easy and effective as just killing another animal to survive. Also, some people physically can't find any other sources of protein in places that are destitute or poverty ridden so sometimes the only option is feeding off animals....
