Ventricular Contraction Research Paper

Premature ventricular contractions are abnormal heartbeats starting in the ventricles. These extra beats disturb the regular rhythm of the heart, causing sometimes feel like a skipped beat in the chest. Premature ventricular contractions are very common, and occur in most people. Premature ventricular contractions are also called:
1. Premature ventricular complexes
2. PVC
3. Premature ventricular beats
4. Extrasystoles
If you have occasional premature ventricular contractions, but you are in good health, there is generally no reason for concern, and no treatment is needed. If you have frequent premature ventricular contractions or underlying heart disease, you may need treatment to help you feel better and treat the underlying problems.

There are many underlying causes of the premature ventricular contractions, these include:
1. Infarct
2. Hypertension
3. Cardiomyopathy, including congestive heart failure
4. hypomagnesemia (blood magnesium levels).
5. hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels)
6. valvular heart disease, such as mitral valve prolapse
7. Hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia may occur, for example, in patients taking diuretics (water pills), hypoxia occurs in conjunction with lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The ECG may show other problems such as heart attacks, hypokalemia, digoxin toxicity, thickening of the heart muscle (hypertrophy) because of high blood pressure long-term blood. A Holter monitoring cannot detect premature ventricular contractions if not occur at that moment. Echocardiography instead uses ultrasound to produce images of the heart's chambers and valves of the lining around the heart

Leopard Syndrome Essay

...Leopard Syndrome The disease discussed in this paper is characterized by an acronym of associated symptoms that are experienced by diagnosed patients. Leopard Syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disease that is caused by a missense mutation in the PTTPN11 gene, which encodes for a key protein involved in the RAS/MAPK pathway for cells when they mature, proliferate, or even apoptose; this pathway is essential for these cellular actions. If interfered with, an array of symptoms, including lentigines, electrocardiographic conduction defects, abnormal genitalia, pulmonary stenosis, abnormal genitalia, growth retardation, and deafness, may be observed. Although Leopard Syndrome is a rare disease that is not commonly found in everyday life, more...

Heart Failure

...University Pathopharmacological Foundations for Advanced Nursing Practice Heart Failure It is estimated that about five million people in the United States are living with heart failure with an overwhelming number of 550,000 newly diagnosed cases each year, costing the nation roughly $32 billion dollars per year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Heart failure is a complex, pathophysiological condition in which the ventricles of the heart is weakened and unable to pump effectively to meet the body’s needs for nutrients or has lost adequate filling capacity. Clinical presentations of heart failure depends on which ventricles have failed to pump blood adequately; left ventricular failure, also known as congestive heart failure (CHF) is more common than right ventricular failure (McCance & Huether, 2014). The most common symptoms of heart failure are shortness of breath, fatigue, and peripheral edema. HF is not a disease, but rather a manifestation of a diseased heart. Large number of disorders can lead to heart failure, and with the aging population and many surviving primary cardiac events, it is no surprise that the most common reason for hospitalization in patients older than 65 years old is heart failure (McClintock, Mose, & Smith, 2014). Heart failure has become a major public health problem because it is the only cardiac condition that continues to increase in prevalence (McClintock, Mose, & Smith, 2014). Organizations such as American...

Medtronic Case Study

...Harvard Business School 9-698-004 July 8, 1997 We’ve Got Rhythm! Medtronic Corporation’s Cardiac Pacemaker Business The legacy of Medtronic Corporation, the company that created the cardiac pacemaker industry, is a proud one. Starting from its earliest pacemakers, which had to be carried outside the body, Medtronic had achieved dramatic improvements in the functionality, size and reliability of these devices. In so doing it had extended the lives, and improved the quality of life, for hundreds of thousands of people in whom pacemakers had been implanted. The pacemaker has been designated as one of the ten most outstanding engineering achievements in the world over the past 50 years, along with the digital computer and the Apollo 11 moon landing. 1 Medtronic, which in 1995 booked operating profit of $300 million on revenues of $1.7 billion, had been founded in 1957 in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Earl Bakken, a researcher and inventor who had to his credit patents on several of the crucial technologies that led to the modern heart pacemaker. Pacemakers were small, battery-powered devices which, when implanted within a patient, helped a malfunctioning heart to beat in a steady, fixed rhythm. Because Medtronic was the first entrant into the pacemaker field and built a strong technological lead, it enjoyed a substantial portion (over 70%) of the market share for cardiac pacing through the 1960s. Building upon Medtronic’s legacy of leadership was not easy, however...

The History of Emergency Medical Services

...Emergency Medical Services: The Evolution Behind the System Russell Keogler CED 595: Project Seminar May 3, 2011 Dr. Richard Gatteau Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine the evolutionary process of the emergency medical services system. The research explores the impact of war and prominent military figures on the development of emergency medical services as well as civilian efforts made to establish emergency services within the public sector. The research also discusses the ways in which major medical advancements and various reports and acts of legislation played a crucial part in the development of the modern day EMS system. Overall, results show that the EMS system as we know it today is a fairly modern creation based on centuries’ worth of ideas and discoveries. Introduction In modern day America the three digits 9-1-1 signify an accessible lifeline for individuals in need of emergency medical attention. The vast system is accessible from any telephone line and provides emergency services to even the most remote locations of the country. However, in spite of the simplistic process to initiate services, the emergency medical system is very complex. Thousands of independent agencies working in different capacities must coordinate efforts to insure that the system runs efficiently. Without effective cooperation by organizations the system would undeniably fail to meet the expectations of those calling for medical aid (Limmer &...

EFSA Scientific Report (2009) 231, 1-107 © European Food Safety Authority, 2009 Review of the potential health impact of β-casomorphins and related peptides SUMMARY Proteins are a very diverse family of large organic compounds involved in many important biological processes. Following their enzymatic hydrolysis during food processing or digestion, proteins may release fragments from their primary amino acid sequence. These fragments are called peptides, and many of them are known to be physiologically active. The possible beneficial effects of bioactive peptides have attracted increasing interest in recent years. On the other hand, there are also reports suggesting that some food-derived peptides might adversely affect human health. Among these, β-casomorphin-7 (BCM7), a peptide sequence present in the milk protein β-casein, has been suggested to...
