Aphrodite is depicted in many sculptures. During the year 350, a full-body, naked, beautiful statue of Aphrodite was created for the first time by Praxiteles. The statue was very sexualised, to show Aphrodite’s ability to provoke sexual desire and to show her beauty(2). Venus de Milo is an ancient sculpture, discovered in 1820 on an island. The woman represented by the statue is beautiful, half naked, but sadly the statue is broken and missing pieces. Although no one knows for sure who Venus de Milo is supposed to represent, many assume Aphrodite was the inspiration because she is half naked, and could be sexualized. (The statue was named after the assumption was made, Venus is the Roman name for Aphrodite.) The sculptor is long gone, so the

Venus De Milo Research Paper

...The Venus de Milo, also known as Aphrodite from Melos, is a famous ancient Greek statue that represents Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Her name, Venus, comes from the Roman name for Aphrodite, and Milos is the Greek island where she was discovered in the 1800’s. She is one of the best-known sculptures from ancient Greece having been created during the Hellenistic period, ca.150–50 BCE. During the Classical period, the art and culture from 480 and 323 BCE, there was a drastic advancement in art. In the course of this time the artwork, especially sculptures, became more natural, realistic, and human-like. Though made from marble and other unyielding materials, the artists managed to make their work look as though they were true humans with soft flesh that could breathe. Praxiteles was a famous sculptor from this time that had this amazing ability. He sculpted the first nude statue of a goddess, Aphrodite of Knidos. This trend of creating realistic statues has continued for centuries. During the Hellenistic period, the period directly after the Classical, ca. 323 BCE, and 30 BCE, there was a great demand for Classical Greek sculptures, copies, or artwork created in a similar style. Artists of this time attempted...

Gabriel's Inferno

...Prologue Florence, 1283 The poet stood next to the bridge and watched as the young woman approached. The world ground to a near standstill as he remarked her wide, dark eyes and elegantly curled brown hair. At first he didn’t recognize her. She was breathtakingly beautiful, her movements sure and graceful. Yet there was something about her face and figure that reminded him of the girl he’d fallen in love with long ago. They’d gone their separate ways, and he had always mourned her, his angel, his muse, his beloved Beatrice. Without her, his life had been lonely and small. Now his blessedness appeared. As she approached him with her companions, he bowed his head and body in a chivalrous salute. He had no expectation that his presence would be acknowledged. She was both perfect and untouchable, a browneyed angel dressed in resplendent white, while he was older, world-weary and wanting. She had almost passed him when his downcast eyes caught sight of one of her slippers — a slipper that hesitated just in front of him. His heart beat a furious tattoo as he waited, breathless. A soft and gentle voice broke into his remembrances as she spoke to him kindly. His startled eyes flew to hers. For years and years he’d longed for this moment, dreamed of it even, but never had he imagined encountering her in such a serendipitous fashion. And never had he dared hope he would be greeted so sweetly. Caught off balance, he mumbled his pleasantries and allowed himself the indulgence of a smile...
