The vermiform appendix, more commonly known as the appendix, is a blind-ended tube connected to the caecum in the large intestine and is located in the right lower quadrant and is approximately 9cm long is considered a part of the digestive system (Derrickson, 2009). The appendix consists of a four layered tissue; from deep to sacrificial they are the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa (Derrickson, 2009). The appendix is considered a vestigial organ, an organ that once had an important role in past ancestors but no longer in present humans, and is thought to have had an important role in the digestion of plant matter (Ansaloni, Catena & Pinna, 2009). It is debated to currently have some role in immune functioning due to its association with the substantial lymphatic tissue, and for this reason is considered a part of the lymphatic system (Ansaloni, Catena & Pinna, 2009).

As mentioned previously the appendix, in humans, is a vestigial organ and is no longer considered vital to human life and is commonly removed through surgery from acute appendicitis (Zissin et al., 2003). Acute appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, common symptoms include pain in the lower abdominal quadrant, nausea and vomiting. If left untreated the appendix can rupture or cause an abscess in the peritoneal cavity, which can in some circumstances lead to death (Hernandez, Jain, Rosiere, & Henderson, 2008). The process of relieving acute appendicitis is usually through surgery, known as an appendectomy and is usually a laparoscopic procedure, this involves three small incisions with a camera to visualize the appendix and surrounding area, however in some circumstance medication is used. A laparoscopic removal of the appendix tends to have few side effects with the most significant concern being infection to the wound; however with safe practices this rarely occurs (Chiu, Nguyen & Bloom, 2011).

With all of this considered humans can live without their appendix, there are generally no repercussions to the removal of the appendix. The laparoscopic surgery, generally used to remove the appendix is considered a safe practice with few after procedural concerns.

Inventec Case

...DATE: 11-05-2005 TO: Louis Woo, CEO, Inventec Corporation FROM: Mitt Romney, Senior Consultant, Brain Consultancy RE: Securing Inventec’s Future Success Being one of Taiwan’s leading Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), in 2005 Inventec stands at a crossroads. So far Inventec’s economic activities focused on designing and manufacturing electronic products for OEMs, mainly western companies, which distributed them using their strong brand names. Since 1995 notebook PCs have been the mainstay of Inventec’s business (Appendix A). However computer industry-wide price and margin erosions are expected to continue. Having only a few core customers, ODMs have become increasingly dependent on their western counterparts, a circumstance which is used against them to obtain lower prices. This is especially true for Inventec (Appendix B). More diversified contract manufacturing partnerships and an increasing consolidation in their industry have increased OEMs’ negotiating strengths as well. As those clients have adopted aggressive pricing strategies, the only thing that counts is how fast you can deliver the lowest cost product. Exploiting even cheaper labor seems almost impossible, since large ODMs have already moved the largest proportion of their manufacturing to low-cost areas in mainland China. Meanwhile Inventec has also developed and marketed software under its own brands. As the PC hardware sector shows signs of weakening, the...

Welco Lumber Case Analysis

...Welco Lumber Company Case Analysis Group 2 – Case 1 MBA 610-T301_2127_1 Bellevue University Welco Lumber Company Case Analysis Gene Denning, an employee of Welco Lumber Company, decided to run a study by videotaping a sample size of 365 logs being processed. However, actual data provided proved that it was a true sample size of only 362 logs, as data for logs # 30, 123, and 127 are missing from his report. He videotaped 3 operators, April, Sid, and Jim, marking the logs, how each log was broken down and the degree to which the cants were properly centered. Gene then did a comparison of what the cost was of the log in its current condition (actual value), to what would have been the correct value of the log if the cut had been accurate (potential value). This allowed him to see the potential revenue that Welco Lumber Company is losing out on their business (profit gain). Question 1: How much profit is lost on imperfect board cuts? During the processing of 362 logs, it was found that exactly half (181) or fifty percent were processed without error. The remaining 181 logs were found to have undergone some type of error in the breakdown process—excessive log breakdown, off center cant, reduced value cut. As a result, the Welco Lumber Company missed out on $735.14 in potential profit. Taking these results one step further, the potential amount of money lost on each of the 181 logs with errors was broken down into ranges of value lost as shown below. From the graph we can...

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course? Currently, I approach weekly course reading material in a fairly unconventional way. My weekdays are usually incredibly hectic between my job of working with my clients and my day to day personal life with my children, so finding any quality reading time is hard during the day time hours. I generally have all reading material downloaded to my laptop in advance as we all should so I can get in a bit of reading time during my break time and my clients nap time. The problem with this is, even though it is quiet and my break time, there is still quite a bit of activity going on around me having to deal with small odds and ends, breaking any concentration I have and understanding of the text. I do get a small amount of time in peace when I get home and right before the kids get home after school in which I use to get in some reading and study time. This time is definitely quality time as my concentration is at its greatest and I can get something done. The night hours, usually after dinner, is where things have been really...
