I would like to begin by saying Simon Young should have taken Vice President Belmont’s suggestions and at least tried to use them. I believe that a good employee listens to their supervisors and tries to use their recommendations as best as they can. I think Young was too upset that students were not coming into the clinic, and that anger distorted his thinking. Now Sallie Strong has an abundance of work to do as the new clinic’s director. I would take into consideration the comment Vice President Belmont stated “They are not going to spend long periods of time in a therapist’s office” (Lewis, Lewis, Packard 75). Vice President Belmont seems to know her student body pretty well and has some insight on the type of students they are. If she …show more content…
Most people are not willingly going to meet with some stranger, regardless of their education, and just fill them in on their life struggles. If the clinic staff is personally known by the students, the students would be more willing to utilize their services. Strong and her staff could also hold regular seminars around campus about drug and alcohol abuse. For example, the student health center was set up this week at several common areas on campus giving out flu shots and creating awareness about the flu. They were able to target a large amount of students in those common areas as well as make connections with students who may need their services in the future. The clinic staff could possibly hold weekly therapy sessions in the student housing buildings and target that student population. If Hillsboro is like Alabama, all of their freshman would be living in a dorm. If the freshman get accustom to using the clinics services, then maybe within the next four years the student body would be back to utilizing the clinic and coming into the clinic on a regular basis.
