Video Analysis To prepare for my lesson, I placed a video camera in the corner of the room behind my kidney table a week prior to the lesson to ensure students would not be distracted by it the day of the lesson. To my surprise, none of the students noticed the camera. When it was time to record the lesson, I discretely pushed record without drawing attention to it.
The Lesson This lesson took place during guided reading. During the direct instruction portion of the lesson, I began by asking students to raise their hand if they knew what a prediction was. During this time, there were several students who raised their hands. The student I called upon said she thought a prediction was a guess about something. I modeled how to use the title and illustrations to make a prediction. I then made a quick sketch to organize my thoughts, and wrote a few sentences about my prediction. Next we read a few pages of the story together. I explained to students how my predictions had changed. It was then I completed the revised prediction portion of the worksheet. During this time, I had a few students raise their hands and share their thoughts about my initial and revised predictions. It was fun to see how their predictions were similar or different from mine. Once this portion of the lesson was complete, we finished reading the story. We then discussed as a large group how my predictions contrasted with the story. At this time students seemed anxious to share their thoughts. I had a few students who forgot to raise their hands before they spoke. To emphasize the importance of raising a hand quietly to be called on, I commended a student for quietly raising his hand and not blurting out the
