...1. The description the requirement of the video system is as below. ------------------------------------------------- A video store system runs a series of fairly standard video stores. Before a video can be put on the shelf, it must be cataloged and entered into the video database. Every customer must have a valid customer card in order to rent a video. A customer rents the video for three days at a time. Every time a customer rents a video, the system must ensure that they do not have any overdue videos. If so, the overdue videos must be returned and an overdue fee must be paid before the customer can rent more videos. Likewise, if the customer has returned overdue videos, but has not paid the overdue fee, the fee must be paid before a new video can be rented. Every morning, the store manager prints a report that lists overdue videos. If a video is two or more days overdue, the manager calls the customer to remind him/her to return the video. If a video is returned in a damaged condition, the manager removes it from the video database and may sometimes charge the customer. a. Draw a use case model for the video system described above. Manager Manage customer Add video Rent Return Overdue Print report Delete video charge Customers (10 marks) b. Rental is one of the use cases in the video system. ...for HFC shareholders. On the other hand, the governance decision required the board to balance its fiduciary responsibility against the original mandate of Milton Hershey to support the Hershey School in perpetuity. The fiduciary responsibility is relatively simple compared with satisfying a broad array of constituents, including the Hershey community, HFC employees, and Pennsylvania’s attorney general. In addition to this teaching note, we provide a variety of teaching supplements to support a discussion of the complex issues presented by the case: • Video footage of the Hershey community and key players in the case • Excel spreadsheets for key case exhibits • Excel spreadsheets for key teaching-note exhibits • Projection-ready copies of case exhibits • Projection-ready copies of teaching-note exhibits All these materials reside on a single CD with a menu format. The videos are particularly useful in bringing to life the stakeholder issues through the statements of Bill Alexander and Richard Zimmerman. Alexander was a successful entrepreneur serving on the trust’s board, and Zimmerman, a...

...Confirming Pages Case 3 United Breaks Guitars John Deighton Leora Kornfeld On July 8, 2009, United Airlines offered professional musician Dave Carroll $1,200 in cash and $1,200 in flight vouchers to ‘make right’ a situation in which his guitar had been damaged at Chicago’s O’Hare airport during transfer from one airplane to another, in full view of passengers seated in the plane. Carroll had spent 15 months seeking compensation, but the effort appeared to have reached an impasse when a United Airlines customer service representative told him that the airline had concluded that the damage was Carroll’s responsibility and that she considered the matter closed. He replied that in that case he would be composing three songs about his experience and posting them to the video-sharing site YouTube. The first song was posted on July 6, 2009. At the same time, he wrote a blog entry detailing the ordeal and posted the link to the YouTube video on his Twitter account. Within a week the video had been viewed three million times, and United Airlines had reached out to Carroll to offer the compensation. Online and offline media helped propagate the story. On July 22, 2009, The Times of London wrote that “the gathering thunderclouds of bad PR caused United Airlines’ stock price to suffer a mid-flight stall, and it plunged by 10 percent, costing shareholders $180 million.”1 Hundreds of news reports repeated the story of how a single poorly handled customer complaint had, thanks to the...

...SaSampa Video, Inc. 10/12/10 12.27 9-201-094 REV: OCTOBER 7, 2003 GREGOR ANDRADE Sampa Video, Inc. Sampa Video, Inc. was the second largest chain of videocassette rental stores in the greater Boston area, operating 30 wholly owned outlets. Begun in 1988 as a small store in Harvard Square catering mostly to students, the company grew rapidly, primarily due to its reputation for customer service and an extensive selection of foreign and independent movies. These differentiating factors allowed Sampa Video to compete directly with the leader in the industry, Blockbuster Video. But unlike the larger rival, Sampa had no ambitions to grow outside of its Boston territory. Exhibit 1 contains summary financial information on the company as of their latest fiscal year-end. In March 2001, Sampa Video was considering entering the business of home delivery of movie rentals. The company would set up a web page where customers could choose movies based on available in-store inventory and pick a time for delivery. This would put Sampa in competition with new internet-based competitors, such as Netflix.com that rented DVDs through the mail and Kramer.com and Cityretrieve.com that hand delivered DVDs and videocassettes. While it was expected that the project would cannibalize the existing operations to some extent, management believed that incremental sales would be substantial in the long run. The project would provide customers the same convenience as internet-based DVD rentals for the...

...and cases that allow us to analyze, improve and design internal firm activities. In the second part, Supply Chain Management, we turn our attention to entities external to the firm and examine the activities of sourcing raw materials and delivering goods to consumers. The components are detailed below: Part I: Business Process Analysis and Improvement. We begin our study of business processes by first playing the “Lego” game. Through this exercise, we will have an overview of a simple assembly line as well as the fundamental concepts in process management, such as capacity, bottleneck, etc. Then, we study how to analyze the operational process using the case “Kristen´s Cookie Company” and further evaluate the financial value of operational improvement. In the following sessions, we will introduce Toyota production system as well as it implication in service context. We will also study the tools of quality management. We finally study the operations strategy and the product-process matrix using “Shouldice” case. Part II: Supply Chain Management: In this part, we turn our attention to the interfaces between an organization and its external environment, more specifically, to the management of relationships with partners and customers. We begin with the newsvendor model, a key tool which helps capture the trade-offs in matching supply with demand. Then, we study the coordination among supply chain partners using the case “Bose”. ...Lambert 10 September 2014 Business Law Ray Rice Incident There has been much debate about the ray rice case that has been going on. There was video surveillence of him and his wife at a casino getting into a confrontation and Ray Rice dragging his wife out of the elevator. At first when this story came out the NFL made a decision of suspending him for only two games, which received much critcism. While Josh Gordon (Browns wide receiver) received a one year ban from the NFL for getting in trouble for marijuana. There was much debate about how a player can get a year ban from marijuana, but a two game ban for hititng his wife. In the article “In Ray Rice case, N.F.L. sees Only What it Wants to see” by Michael Powell, it talks about how Roger Goodell reacted to the situation, “Roger Goodell, the commisioner of the N.F.L. took a seat with “CBS This Morning” to explain once again how very little he knew about the circumstances in which Baltinore Ravens running back knocked out his then-fiancee. When we met with Ray Rice an his representatives, it was ambigious about what actually happened.” Later it was found out that there was a second video that was out in which shows the actual encounter between the two in which Ray Rice hit his wife in the elevator which caused her to pass out. The NFL is taking much heat about this situation and so is Roger Goodell because a second source found out about the video before the NFL did. The second video just became...
