McGonigal theorized that if humans want to survive in the next century on this planet, everyone on this planet has to dramatically increase the amount of time on playing video games. She specifically states that playing video games will solve the world’s biggest problems like poverty, hunger, climate change, global conflict, and obesity. She believes that gamers are “super-empowered hopeful individuals” meaning that they are individually capable of changing the world. However, they are only capable of changing the virtual world but not the real world. Solving first world problems require people to actually go out into the real world, engaging with other people, trying to encourage politicians to raise awareness, and putting a lot valuable time and effort to solve the …show more content…
McGonigal gives a great example of how in World of Warcraft, there are world-saving missions that inspire every gamer, so much, that gamers are willing to work collaboratively with complete strangers. Furthermore, McGonigal explains that by spending all this time playing video games, humans are evolving to be more collaborative and resilient species. The next part of her speech, McGonigal gives four principles of gaming. First, gamers have urgent optimism, meaning that gamers are extremely self-motivated to solve the game with the belief that there is hope of success. Second, there is a social fabric, which states that even if gamers lose, gamers will feel better playing video games with other gamers because they build up strong bonds. Third, there is blissful productivity, the idea that gamers enjoy working harder than they are relaxing because they feel optimized as human beings. Finally, there is an epic meaning, which states that every video game has an epic story and an epic knowledge of resources. McGonigal main job is to take these four elements of video gaming and apply it to the real

Rhetoric

...Dylan Weber Kim Priest English 101 Rhetorical Analysis During the beginning of this article, Tom Bissel has a back and forth comparison of his opinion about the video game Fallout 3, and telling his imaginary children, Kermit and Hussein, what he was doing the day that Barack Obama was elected to be our first African-American President of the United States. He tries to make an argument that even though there was a widely-known national, and even global, event that took place, he felt like playing the open world game of Fallout 3 was just more important. He goes on to say, “And so, my beloved Kermit, my dear little Hussein, at the moment America changed forever, your father was wandering an ICBM-denuded wasteland, nervously monitoring his radiation level, armed only with a baseball bat, a 10mm pistol, and six rounds of ammunition, in search of a vicious gang of mohawked marauders who were 100 percent bad news and totally had to be dealt with. Trust Daddy on this one”. This analogy of two events shows that beating a video game like Fallout 3 was just as important as watching the election of the 44th President of the United States. And while the excruciating detail of the game makes it seem like there was a lot of responsibility on his hands and he makes it sound like an assertion, it wouldn’t matter in the end, because we all know it was just a virtual world, and he missed out on reality. His anecdote was very detailed, however, and I’m sure if there was anyone who was skeptical...

The Walking Dead: The Video Game Vs. The Telltale Series

...When looking at two different reviews of the same game, how do audiences know which review to read? What makes one review better than the other? On the surface, both reviews provide ample information about the plot and gameplay. To fully analyze and compare the two reviews, we must look deeper into the structure of each, and from there we can decide which is a better review. After looking at various aspects of each review—paying attention to sentence style, readability score, and literary devices—we will be able to see differences between the two reviews. In this essay, we will look at two reviews of the video game “The Walking Dead: The Video Game” by The Telltale Series. ...class. Contributors:Ethan Sproat, Dana Lynn Driscoll, Allen Brizee Last Edited: 2012-04-27 10:46:02 Example 1: “I Have a Dream” Speech A lot of what was covered above may still seem abstract and complicated. To illustrate how diverse kinds of texts have their own rhetorical situations, consider the following examples. First, consider Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Because this speech is famous, it should be very easy to identify the basic elements of its particular rhetorical situation. Text The text in question is a 17-minute speech written and delivered by Dr. King. The basic medium of the text was an oral speech that was broadcast by both loudspeakers at the event and over radio and television. Dr. King drew on years of training as a minister and public speaker to deliver the speech. He also drew on his extensive education and the tumultuous history of racial prejudices and civil rights in the US. Audiences at the time either heard his speech in person or over radio or television broadcasts. Part of the speech near the end was improvised around the repeated phrase “I have a dream.” Author http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/625/08/ Page 1 of 9 Purdue OWL: The Rhetorical Situation 9/11/13 7:53 PM Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most iconic leader of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. Rhetorical Analysis of an Article

...analytics to create a new, more accurate era of basketball statistics. In an article for The Atlantic, Terrance F. Ross elaborates on the topic and the controversy surrounding it to during his brilliantly written piece entitled “Welcome to Smarter Basketball”. However, it is more than just the words themselves that give the article its desired effect. Several rhetorical strategies are imperative to Ross’ success in convincing his readers to embrace the analytical movement. The most glaring of these aspects is the rhetorical situation, also called the context of the issue. The issue of analytics in basketball is so relevant today because of the effective results that it has been yielding in recent time. For example, “The most-watched Finals since the age of Michael Jordan ended with victory for the Golden State Warriors over the Cleveland Cavaliers—both of which are teams that have heavily incorporated data analysis into how they play the game” (Ross 1). While this trend is becoming increasingly more popular around the league, it still faces major opposition. Many believe that it takes the fun and magic out of the game that they have known and loved for years, while others have even stronger feelings about the subject. During an infamous rant in January of 2014, Charles Barkley, an NBA superstar in the eighties and nineties, said “Smart guys wanted to fit in so they made up a term called...

...Alex Woodward September 29, 2015 Intermediate Comp. Analyzing the Analyzers In the world of media and entertainment, nothing is as varied as printed word. When one thinks of different genres, movies may come to mind. There is adventure, horror, documentary, comedy, and a slew of others, each with their own techniques and rhetorical devices like the slow zoom, the music sting at the jump scare, and the witty dialogue break in between action set pieces. However, you could fit all of the genres of movies, video games, and TV shows combined, into a fraction of what books have to offer. In that legion of many genres, one in particular is starting to make strides (and catch cynical flak) in our modern social-media defined culture: Pop Sociology. Pop sociology is a relatively new genre, at least in the popular zeitgeist, that aims to take the otherwise formal, scientific, and somewhat closed off genre of sociology journals, and cast them out in the popular light. As “The Sociologist” page on Tumblr put it, “There are many sociologists who see it as an important part of their professional work to make their ideas and findings accessible to a wider social audience…” and unlike other more peer reviewed scientific journals, “…anybody, it seems, can call themselves a sociologist–even without formal professional training.” (Marshall) This can be both a good ting and a bad thing, as it gets more messages out there to the public eye, but they sometimes lack the stringent level of quality...

...Analysis of my own DVD cover, ‘Class On Grass’ I will be analysing my own DVD cover, ‘Class On Grass’. The genre of this film is a hybrid genre of sport and co medy. The stereotypical conventions of sport and comedy include football, running and, for comedy, laughter, of course, to attract a bigger, mainstream audience. My target audience are anybody over the age of 12, who are also interested in football or comedy. The protagonists of my film are England football stars Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. These two are immensely famous and are known all over the world. However, people only know the sporting side to them but not the personal side. This will engage the interest of my target audience because they will desire to see these two legends in this movie and also see the other side of them. Also, the connotations of the colours red, white and green represent the England flag and a football pitch. It symbolises football as a whole. The denotation is that it is Wayne Rooney and David Beckham; the connotations of these two players are skills and legends. This will entice the attention of my target audience, as they will recognise these two players and will want to see them in action. The demographic of this DVD cover is comedy and football fans, which are over the age of 12. They will enjoy watching their idols battle it out for the number 1 spot. They will also ache in laughter as this amusing rivalry is occurring. Firstly, the title is big, bold and clear, as is the...

Hunger Games Rhetorical Analysis

...Rhetorical Analysis Hunger Games has been in writing, but the idea that it can be put into a video is inconceivable because of its complex nature. Pollitt (554) calls it a crack on paper owing to its diversity in the aspects of characters and themes. Although the movie is interesting, the idea of putting it into a movie meant scrapping most of its interesting elements. However, the motion picture does justice to the book because most of the contents of the book. The only downside is the case that the main character's voice is watered in the movie. In most of the articles, the author uses the excerpts of the movie as well as sarcasm to present her message about the movie in the articles. This is a well-written piece given the fact that it relates the book to the movie in many aspects making sure that the basic facts in the book are understood by the readers of the article. For instance, the book states that while the movie is based on a distant future of the United States of America. The themes and the messages in the movie represent those of America political and the general situation. Where power is shared among the minority who have the financial power and might, to claim and keep the power (Pollitt 554). Just like many contemporary regimes, the...

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

...Assignment #3: Rhetorical Analysis Essay ENG: Section 1105 The Backwards Robe Phenomenon I believe almost everyone in the United States, and even other countries, have heard about the Snuggie (http://www.mysnuggiestore.com/). The Snuggie epidemic is definitely contagious, myself admitting that I even own one. Infomercials have been around for decades, but the Snuggie was definitely a game-changer in that world. From the many commercials that give most of us a few laughs, to seeing almost every living room with a Snuggie draped over their couch or recliner. It's safe to say that the Snuggie is one of the most successful infomercials today, acquiring around $400 million dollars in sales and ranking number 8 on the best seller list. The backwards robe does an amazing job in the commercial for advertisement, showing you that you can go anywhere in your Snuggie and you're able to keep your arms warm and functional, but is it really that necessary of a product? I believe that the goofiness of the infomercial is part of what has made it so successful. The product itself is silly as well, which makes it more memorable than the Slap-Chop or the Ove Glove. The infomercial still uses logos in knowing that it is soft fleece, and does have a reasonable refund date along with a reasonable price. While watching the commercial over again on the internet, I almost feel like they take it too far and it ends up just being cheesy. It seems very outdated, even though it isn't more than 10 years...
