Vietnam and america are very different, and even have a history of tension, but both have notably distinct and different cultures. From all walks of life, something is done differently than in america and has a reason for being so. Weddings, funerals, holidays, education and superstitions are all examples of things that vary from what we’re used to.
In america, weddings usually consist of an engagement with a ring, large puffy white bridal gowns, a service and reception and then the weddings over. It's considered unlucky for a bride to be seen in her dress before the wedding and to make it herself. in Vietnam the opposite is true, most couples have their wedding pictures done long before the actual event and wedding gowns are traditionally …show more content…
in America we have holidays such as Christmas,Thanksgiving, New Years, Halloween, and birthdays; though some of which are also celebrated in Vietnam, they have an all in one holiday of sorts called Tet Nguyen Dan. This is the most important holiday in Vietnam and is similar to the lunar New Year's celebration. instead of leaving cookies for Santa on Christmas, 7 days before Tet cookies are placed by the fireplace or altar for the kitchen God, who reports back to heaven the activities of each household to determine their fate for the rest of the year. they're hoping to “sweeten the deal” a little bit by leaving cookies. once the kitchen God leaves, the rest of the week leading up to Tet Nguyen Dan is called Tet Nein, which basically means the end of the year. many take this time to visit family graves and clean them, burning incense and leaving a tray of fruit to respect and remember the dead. Many also spend this time cleaning and preparing, it’s said you shouldn’t cook or clean for the first three days of tet. At midnight, the party begins as bells are rung and prayers are chanted from the Buddhist temples while at home families congratulate each other on reaching the new year and turning a year older. This is sortve like a universal birthday party for everyone. It’s common to buy new clothes for this event, and children are given presents from their older family members, receiving lixi “lucky money” in a red envelope and offering up some wisdom
