Chopsticks

...Have you ever wondered to eat food without a fork or spoon? If you like Asian food, but want the full experience of eating as it is meant to be eaten, eat with chopsticks. Chopsticks are the main eating utensils in China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Vietnam. When watching others using chopsticks, it could look simple, but when you try it, you will end up asking for a fork instead. Here’s how to rely on eating Asian food with chopsticks. First, purchase a pair of chopsticks. Place both chopsticks on a sturdy table, with the broad ends facing you. Pick up one chopstick with your right or left hand. Have the broad end of the chopstick lay between the part of your thumb and index finger connects. Then, provide extra support by slightly curling the middle finger and gently placing the tip of the middle finger on the chopstick. (See diagram 1) Raise you index finger. Next, use your other hand to pick up the second chopstick. Place the chopstick with your hand above the first chopstick, roughly one inch apart. Make sure the first chopstick’s broad end is parallel to the second chopstick’s broad end. Grip the second chopstick with your first hand’s index finger and thumb, leaving a space with your middle finder. You may use the other hand to adjust our grip on the chopsticks to a comfortable position. Use that same hand to make sure the narrow tips of both chopsticks are lined up evenly and are parallel to each other. (See diagram 2) After that...

Doing Business in Vietnam

... • Vietnam is a true emerging market, offering ground floor and growing opportunities for U.S. exporters and investors. Vietnam’s economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world in recent years, expanding annually at 7-8.5 percent, while industrial production has been growing at around 14-15 percent per year. Vietnam’s macroeconomic challenges and the global financial crisis dampened this growth in 2008 and will continue to do so in 2009. • In response to significant macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation and a large and growing current account deficit, the Government of Vietnam (GVN) implemented a series of fiscal and monetary tightening measures in 2008 that were effective in stabilizing the Vietnamese Dong, cutting the trade deficit, and slowing inflation. As these measures were taking hold, the global economic outlook worsened in the fall of 2008. As a result, Vietnam now expects 6.5 percent GDP growth in 2009, but many economists...

Ineffectiveness of Learning History in Vietnam

...1. Introduction In Vietnam, planning and conducting more effective learning and teaching strategies for History is considered as one of the most challenging task for educators (Mr. Truong Tan Sang 2012). The quality of teaching and learning History has stood low and even had tendency to get worse in the past few years. A report in Tuoi tre (July 26, 2011) revealed that the year 2011 witnessed an unprecedentedly disappointed result in History of the entrance exam, approximately 80-90% of candidates got the mark below five, in some extent, the figure even reached over 98%. This is a seriously alarming warning for Vietnam about the unacceptable quality of teaching and learning History. Although it is significantly crucial to do a research to figure out the effective ways of educating History, the number of studies about the methods of History teaching is relatively limited; in addition, all of them still have not provided enough necessary information (Mr. Truong Tan Sang 2012). Nevertheless, thanks to these studies, we at least have had an overview about what should be done to improve methods of teaching and learning History in Vietnam. According to Phan Ngoc Lien (2002) and Nguyen Thi Coi (2006), changing attitude, upgrading facilities and holding up training courses would be three crucial measures to improve the quality of History educating in Vietnam. The Ministry of Education has already implemented diverse campaign focusing on these measures such as textbook reforming and...

War Just or Unjust

...Can WAR ever be just? Can there be rules about war so that fair play is possible? Has there ever been a war with a just cause? This has been a debate for ages. It depends on who you are asking if you ask a Christian they will tell you any war is unjust because god would not want you to kill others. He would want you to turn the cheek. Others may say it is just if it’s in defense. In this paper, I will explain why the Vietnam War was just. The United States got involved in the Vietnam War from 1954 -1964 to prevent and contain communism. In Vietnam, an independence movement under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh rose to challenge French rule. The United States helped France by giving financial and military aid. The US had moral and ethical reasons to stand up and face unethical leaders that oppressed other weaker people and to contain the spread of communism. Communism is horrible because the government controls every move you make and you have no say in what happens in your life. Such as no right to vote, no freedom of speech, no right to a fair trial, etc. This is what the United States was trying to protect South Vietnam from. Communists used terrorism, murdered and subversion to destabilize countries. Just this alone was a just cause for the United States to get involved in the Vietnam War. Many feel that this wasn’t a good enough reason for the United States to get involved and was immoral unjust war, or that communism is not that bad. According to Aquinas four things...

Nonfiction Reaction Paper

...by Andrew Lam and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes are the two nonfiction stories featured in this reaction paper. Although, the time period in which each story was written is not the same, both of these nonfiction stories share a common theme. The subject of that theme is one where an elder teaches a person younger than themselves, the ways of their ancestors through religion or culture. Misunderstandings bought forth by failed communication is another theme that these two stories have in common. Both themes explain that a profound gap exists between the older and newer generation of people, regardless of the time period each one is in. For instance, in the story, “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone“, the author writes about a Vietnamese teenager who has to learn the ways of his newfound American culture due to the pressure of his current times. While in the story, “Salvation”, the black American was pressured to follow and believe in Christianity in order to display obedience within his community. Both stories portray different cultural perspectives but they both provide a similar theme when it comes to values that are instilled into the younger generation through the methods used by the older generation. In each of these stories, the author provides a main character as the narrator, who also portrays the author himself. Each author is writing about a conflict that he had experienced in his younger years. Although both of these stories are nonfiction or based on...
