In the school of Villa Duchesne, we pride ourselves on our goals, our criteria, and the mold that the administrators expect every girl to fill. This mold is their perfect student, in which they follow all of the hypocritical rules of the handbook, they represent the goals and criteria, they maintain perfect grades, and play sports. The school “thrives” on this mold. But the truth of the matter is, a percentage of the student body does not enjoy sports. The percentage does not have perfect grades and they do not follow all of the rules. And that is because students will live by the Goals before the rules. That is how I think about my school experience.

This rule in the handbook is not acceptance. I feel that members of the Villa Duchesne community should be themselves in order to be accepted. If we are restricted to the mold of what the school wants us to be, then there is no point to this criteria. Why can we not express ourselves when we aren’t going to be accepted and respected in our community? A matter of respect is accepting people for who they are, how they portray themselves, and loving them in their body no matter what they do to …show more content…
Visible tattoos, excessive body piercing, and alternative hair colors and styles are not allowed at School. Any faculty member, staff member, or administrator may address a student’s appearance if it is considered inappropriate, disruptive, or distracting within the school environment” (vdoh.org). If we are a countercultural school, then why are we not encouraging this? In the Goal Five criteria it states that: “School programs provide for recognizing, nurturing and exercising leadership in its many forms” (sophie.org). Why are we training Villa students to be like leaders of the past, when we could tell them that they can express themselves, and still be leaders? The definition of a leader is simply, “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Google). Who is the one to say a leader has to look a certain way? Why can’t a leader have pink or blue hair? Who is the one who says a leader cannot look or be different? Why are we teaching our girls to fit a mold that society wants us to be like, instead of a countercultural mold that can be anything we can imagine?
