Coco-Cola Vintage Ad

...Coco-Cola Vintage Ad Elizabeth Hamilton Professor Smith Devry University March 28, 2014 Coco-Cola Vintage Ad Throughout its history Coco-Cola has always managed to use advertising as a powerful tool to create that special atmosphere in the minds of consumers that differentiates Coco-Cola from just some generic cola. In the past it was also extremely effective in advertising its product gaining a lot of market share and getting to the top of the market in terms of sales. The essay analyzes a vintage advertisement according to the rhetorical appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos and notes that Coco-Cola effectively uses appeals to authority, logic and emotions to make Coke a lifestyle, not just a drink. The vintage ad analyzed in the essay is a print ad that features the title Coco-Cola and the following text “Is a delightful palatable healthful beverage. It relives fatigue and is indispensable for business and professional men, students, wheelmen, athletes. It relieves mental and physical exhaustion. Is the favorite drink for ladies when thirsty, weary, despondent… Sold in bottles and at soda fountains for 5 cents. Newest refreshing drink in the world”. Clearly, the ad has many claims that nowadays would be consider illegal, inappropriate and simply false, yet back in the days, it was an example of what marketing was about : selling it at all cost even if it meant lying to the consumers. Although, to be fair, many other things, like heroine, morphine, cocaine and LSD were...

Vintage Fashions, a Way of Retaining Originality

...Vintage Fashions are a way of retaining individuality in the age of fast fashion-discuss In the age of fast fashion and mass production of garments vintage fashions have become increasingly popular as a way of escaping contemporary stereotypes and retaining individuality. However the acceptance of this ‘vintage look’ has made the fashion industry adopt it as a way of creating new collections therefore making it more accessible and less individualising than it originally was. The meaning behind vintage fashion has changed drastically in the last 50 years, formally being associated with poverty and the lower class, due to the fact that second hand clothing was very dirty and was often contaminated with diseases such as the plague. Even though this was the case second hand clothing was necessary for many people before the rise of ready to wear fashion, as emphasized by Caroline Evans (2007) “Second-hand dress has historically been associated with low economic status and class; long before there was a ready-to-wear industry, the second-hand trade clothed the poor, often in third-, fourth- and fifth-hand clothing”(2007:249). Clothes were very highly valued; they were passed down in wills and given as gifts, this was due to the fact that clothes were very expensive as all clothing was hand made. However in the 1960’s with the introduction of mass production when clothes were no longer as expensive they were also no longer one of a kind. After WW2, the age of make do and mend...

Rhetorical Analysis Vintage Ad Essay

...Rhetorical Analysis Vintage Ad Essay Crystal Cash DeVry University Rhetorical Analysis Vintage Ad Essay This Palmolive soap advertisement’s headline reads: "Let your beauty be seen.” While looking at this headline from a modern prospective, one might find such claims absurd. When one considers the context of the ad, and that this advertisement targeted the female demographic in America during the 1950’s it kind of makes sense that the ad may have been persuasive. The 50’s can be regarded as one of the happiest decades in American history, it was the end of World War two and the economy was expanding to a global standard. There were two forms of advertising in the 50’s era, pathos and logos. Looking at it from the 50’s perspective, the housewife wants to use this product to look appealing to her husband because in that time the women stayed at home and looked after the home while the men worked. In this ad, Palmolive targets the growing population of suburban women and uses rhetorical strategies that will appeal to emotion and logic. The primary focus of the ad is Palmolive’s appeal to emotion. The depiction of the housewife looking very beautiful with a flawless complexion and the doting husband apparently hanging on her shoulder admiring her beautiful complexion suggests that with this product you “too” can have an adoring husband admiring your new flawless complexion when you use Palmolive soap. In the text of the ad, it states how Palmolive’s beauty plan brings exciting...

Miller High-Life Vintage Ad

...HELP MILLER HIGH-LIFE SAVE AMERICA’S EAGLES (1986) English 112 – Composition Due 7/23/12 What do Freedom, Liberty and Independence mean to Americans? That’s all the bald eagle represents for the United States, as it was accepted as the National Bird in 1782. In 1986, Miller High-Life used the bald eagle in an ad; an ad that displays an eagle soaring through the sky freely. There’s an article on the ad stating, “Our national symbol faces extinction and to look for Miller High-Life products at our favorite retail store during the Fourth of July holiday and find out to help Miller keep our magnificent eagles soaring forever.” Miller High-Life products also stand over their slogan which reads “Made the American Way”. With patriotism in mind, the ad uses Ethos, Pathos and Logos to reach out to the American public and together they can save the eagles. The author clearly displays ethos in the ad “Help Miller High-Life Save America’s Eagles” by the authority eagles have in the sky. Being that eagles really don’t have any predators other than man, we can save their species by coming together. Credibility is displayed in the ad because the bald eagle represents the United States as the national symbol. Using the products slogan “Made the American Way” and “Our National Symbol Faces Extinction” emphasizes the authority and credibility America portrays. Pathos is clearly displayed by informing the American public that the national symbol faces extinction. Hoping to get...

A Rhetorical Analyst of a Vintage 1930 Era Coca Cola Advertisement

You can still see its concept at work every day whether on television, in magazines, billboards, internet, and even hear them while listening to the radio. The Coca Cola Company has been one of the most infamous companies to arrive in mainstream America. Founded in 1886, Coca Cola has invested approximately over 2 billion dollars each year into its advertisements. People from every generation and walks of life could remember Coca Cola’s, “Delicious and Refreshing” (Coca Cola, 1930) iconic statement, which could be found underneath its name and on its logos. At Christmas, everyone look forward to seeing all of the different advertisements on television or gaze upon important figures such as Santa Claus in numerous magazines and during the summertime, watching everyday people at the beach, having fun or eating at a barbeque with very the drink as their choice of beverage. In my research of a vintage 1930 era Coca Cola ad, I can see the use of a pleasant, out-going appeal encouraging the public to buy their soda beverage, in which were at the time are children, teenagers, and working class adults; portraying the message that nothing can satisfy thirst more than making, “a pause that refreshes” (Coca Cola, 1930) other than with a Coca Cola.
