Violent Tendencies in the Big Sleep

The theme of violent tendencies flow through both Poe and Raymond’s novels, they are both used similarly and differently as well as for different effects. Also with different techniques.
In The Big Sleep Marlowe and Carmen Sternwood have a love hate relationship “I didn’t like her anymore.” Throughout chapter 31 they go from being friendly to each other to Carmen trying to shoot Marlowe to Marlowe tending to Carmen while she was unwell. Marlowe seems to genuinly care for Carmen "i caught her as she fell". He takes extra precautions to make sure she is ok "took all my strength to do it". Marlowe then protects Carmen from what has jus happened by keeping the truth from her which might scare her "what happened?" "Nothing why?". Their relationship is quite confusing and tends to turn very quickly. Similarly in Poe’s William Wilson the relationship that the main character has with his double is quite the same. At times he is fascinated by him “Deep awe” but that soon turns to hatred “Scoundrel!” Wilson's doppelganger is what you would say obssessed with Wilson, which other than looking exactly the same as him strains the relationship they have and turns it sour "imperious domination" . Wilson same as Marlowe was brought together with his double due to negative circumstances.
However Wilson’s relationship with his doppelganger is rather sinister in the fact that his doubles presence is somewhat paranormal “damnable whisper”. Wilson wants to kill his double, remove him from his life and doesn’t have a problem doing so “frenzy” describes his hatred. Whereas Marlowe and Carmen’s relationship is normal and friendlier in comparison “My, but your cute.” However in both pieces of text there is a scene of violence between the two characters.
Violent tendencies are demonstrated throughout William Wilson whether it is actions or just thoughts. Most of the violence is towards the end, however there are violent tendencies throughout the whole text. There is a sense of annoyance and hatred between the two characters; one because they are so dramatically alike and two because no one else can see it. At one point the original William sneaks into the other's room here is a hint of violent tendencies, not through actions but thoughts. Sneaking into someones room is seen as not normal and a quite threatening. Although they hate each other the original William is scared of the other which makes him more violent "keenness of feeling" shows how he makes him feel and "numbness" shows the cold-hearted attitude he has.
The last few pages of this text are where the violence really shows. The two Williams get into a fight. This is where the first William shows true anger and rage. There’s an underlying tone of anger “violently” but he finally confronts the situation. “I stab you where you stand” shows the hatred. The violence then goes up a notch “thrust him furiously”. He is crazy with rage he almost doesn’t know what he’s doing “frantic with every species of wild excitement”. Even though there was a fight between two people the true violence is more sinister as he comes to realise he has unintentionally killed himself.
Similarly in The Big Sleep when Carmen runs out of ammo she begins to shake violently and take a turn for the worst ending up unconscious this could be related to William Wilson because when he tried to overcome the other character he ends up killing himself “hast murdered thyself”. Here when Carmen tries to overcome the other character she ends up falling unconscious “she fell”. Both characters mad with rage ended up causing harm to themselves than the enemy they greatly desired to conquer.
Wilson has quite a dark mind "I began to murmur,- to hesitate,- to resist" he's become his own enemy. In my extract when Wilson is confronted by his double he turns wild with anger "frenzy of wrath" throughtout this part of the text there is a lot of physical violence between the two characters. Wilson, who has consumed alcohol which doesn't help begins to curse showing the reader a portion of his anger "imposter! Accursed villian!" He turns as evil as his enemy "voice husky with rage". Similarly when Carmen began to shoot at Marlowe she turned from sweet to sinister "sharp little teeth", she acted rather inncent and oblivious of what she had just done "not worried at all". Like Wilson, Carmen when at her climax goes mad with rage and darkness falls over her "scraped bone look". Both Camen and Wilson are come across animal like when in their element "not a nice animal". Wilson describes his actions as "brute" like. Only difference is Carmen isnt strong enough to kill someone "lay crumpled".
The language in both novels are drastically different obviously they were both published at the same time but they were written for different audiences. Edgar Allen Poe was being paid for every word he wrote so he tended to elongate and use complex lexical terms. This meant that he used words that didn’t exactly need to be there but still made perfect sense. On the other hand Raymond Chandler was paid for each finished product sold so he was able to write as much in a chapter or as little as he liked. This doesn’t mean the quality of the novel was any less that Poe’s. “Every species of wild excitement” is the perfect example of where Poe would elongate his sentences as he could have simple said really angry. Chandler on the other hand when describing the anger of a character he simply said “aged, deteriorated, become animal and not a nice animal” clear and to the point. Poe’s stories tend to be full of tension and the events happen quite fast this is because he wrote short stories, whereas Chandler could take his time and spread out upcoming events over numerous chapters however he did not drag it on for it to become boring. When reading both chandler and Poe’s pieces of text you would not think they were written around the same time Poe uses language such as “ yet henceforward art thou also dead – dead to the world” and “ in me didst thou exist – and in my death, see by this image which is thine own, utterly thou hast murdered thyself”. On the other hand Chandler uses language such as this “ stand there you son of a bitch” and “my but you are cute”. I think here there is what we call diachronic variation as both pieces of text were written around the same time but Chandler seems more modern that Poe.

The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao Analysis

...Throughout the book, Oscar expresses more than enough times that dying a virgin is a big concern for him. He even shares his fear with Yunior. “He coughed. I heard from a reliable source that no Dominican male has ever died a virgin. You who have experience in these matters—do you think this is true? […] O, it’s against the laws of nature for a dominicano to die without fucking at least once” (Díaz, 168). Although Oscar’s sole ambition is to find a woman who returns his love, it does not settle in until the very end of the novel. For the majority of the story, he is trying to have sex but he does not have the masculine qualities to achieve his goal. Oscar is torn because he fails at the expectations set out for...

Do Parents Deserve Love

...Do parents deserve love unconditionally? Often we as people are born into a family. This family can range from the “traditional” nuclear family to the growingly common “alternative” family. With being born into a family some bonds come along with it, this parent-child bond is what I am interested in examining. Is it something that is set in stone upon birth? Is it a condition which cannot be changed? Or does this connection between parent and child come with a certain set of conditions? Of course it’s safe to assume the majority of people would out right claim that it is set at birth and only an ungrateful person would deny his or her mother’s or father’s love, or that a parent just has not been patient enough with their child to refuse love to them. If there are conditions, what may they be? If these conditions put either child or parent at risk for diminished quality of life, may it just be better to lose the love for a parent or child? I grew up in a small suburban community, like many other American kids. My father worked for the Department of Defense and my mother was a hairdresser. My father worked long days and my mother would be the one to watch over us most of the time. Of course my brother and I would get into trouble as little boys do. I was always worse than my brother when it came to disobeying rules and basically causing havoc. The typical punishment for just about any offensive minor or major was a spanking. Common in the time I know and even more common in...

Macbeth

...Macbeth- Shakespeare Caroline Rebry January 8, 2010 Mr. Salciccioli In the Shakespearean story Macbeth, the character Lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s wife, is one of Shakespeare’s most forcefully drawn female characters he has ever created. Lady Macbeth suffers none of her husband’s uncertainty. She desires the kingship for him and wants him to murder Duncan in order to obtain it. She is one of the only characters in the play that could persuade Macbeth the way she does. Her sly and cunning plans lead Macbeth to fulfill her desires of becoming King and Queen. As well, her incredible mind tricks cause her husband to continue to achieve their goal as becoming King and Queen. Considering the relationship between cause and effect in the play, Lady Macbeth, through her manipulation, deceptiveness, and mind games, is one of the characters who is more responsible for Macbeth’s crimes in the play.  When we first meet Lady Macbeth, she is already plotting Duncan’s murder, and she is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. She seems fully aware of this and knows that she will have to push Macbeth into committing murder. Lady Macbeth manipulates her husband with remarkable effectiveness, overriding all his objections; when he hesitates to murder, she repeatedly questions his manhood until he feels that he must commit murder to prove himself. Lady Macbeth questions,  Was the hope drunk Wherein you...

Consumer Behavior

...Question 01: How do consumers culture, social, personal and psychological characteristics affect their cosmetics shopping behavior? Answer: The behavior that the cosmetic consumers display in searching, purchasing, using, evaluating and disposing a product that they expect will satisfy their needs is very important to create a market. It mainly focuses on how individuals make decisions to spend their time, money and effort on that cosmetic. That includes what they buy, why they buy it, when they buy it, where they buy it, how often they buy it, how often they use it, how they evaluate it after the purchase and the impact of such evaluations on future purchases, and how they dispose it. 1. Cultural Factors: Culture has a profound influence on all aspects of human behavior. Culture is a pervasive influence which underlies all facets of social behavior and interaction. It is embodied in the objects used in everyday life and in modes of communication in society. Different cultures react differently to a new product, as the meanings, values, ideas and beliefs of a social group are articulated through various cultural artifacts. One’s own personal culture guides the selection of cosmetics. The language and the symbols used on the package influences the selection of cosmetics and the ritual which we perform has an effect on the use of cosmetics too. While selecting cosmetics, culture influences their selection. For example, complexion of Asians is darker than Europeans...

The House in “the Yellow Wallpaper” Ambivalence or Brilliance?

Introduction: “All meanings, we know, depend on the key of interpretation.” By Georg Eliot It goes without saying that the more one ponders upon the masterpiece written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the more compelled one finds themselves to, not only reverence what she brought forth, but to also acclaim the diverse interpretations one can come up with of a text written well over a century ago. The story talks about a woman who is diagnosed with "temporary nervous depression—a slight hysterical tendency" (Gilman 1) and thus is sentenced by her physician to a rest cure. Following her husband’s and doctor’s orders, her suffering grows worse and worse and signs of depression, anxiety and dissociation manifest, quite the opposite of what was supposed to happen. Having the ability to scare and horrify the reader, this unique story had been considered as a classic in Gothic literature. However, it has recently been perceived as an early indictment of the patriarchal social structure and therefore has become a classic in feminist literature. There are many signs of Gothic elements and feminist ideas presented via symbolism, and one of the most prominent figures presented in the story is the house. In this paper, I will provide an illustration...

...Although throughout the Narrative, Frederick Douglass has a tendency to skip around often and does not always follow a completely chronological ordering, the work begins with his childhood. Frederick Douglass gives a summary of how he, like many other slave children, has no idea when his birthday is but as far he can guess it must have been around 1818. He was separated from his mother right after he was born (which he imagines was because they did not want the bonds of family to develop naturally between families) but recalls how sometimes she would walk at night from a neighboring plantation to sleep with him. As this important part of this summary of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” makes clear, he tells the reader that she died but because of his lack of connection with her the news did not have much of an impact on him. All Frederick Douglass knows about his father is that he is a white man based on his light skin tone and rumors he’s heard to confirm it. Frederick Douglass then gives the reader a brutal short summary of that the rape of female slaves by their white masters actually benefits slavery because by law the products of the rape become slaves themselves. When you’re reading this analysis and summary of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” and throughout the text itself, you should notice the way Douglass makes reference not just to the cruelty of slavery as an institution, but also how he shows the way it has become institutionalized through...

Inside Your Head

...Calder Mahan March 24 2016 PSY 2012-80911 Professor Drew. Inside Your Head Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) was first acknowledged in the 1700's but it was not understood at the time, so it was therefore dismissed as simply a smaller symptom of a larger issue. Many cases show up in medical records throughout the years, but in 1905, Dr. Morton Prince wrote a book about MPD that is now a well-known foundation for the disease. A few years after it was published Sigmund Freud dismissed the affliction and this dropped it from being discussed at any credible mental health establishments. Since then the disorder was overlooked and misdiagnosed as either schizophrenia or psychosis. Many in the medical profession did not believe that a person could unknowingly have more than one personality or person inside one body. In 1993, records showed that three to five thousand patients were being treated for MPD, compared to the hundreds of cases reported ten years earlier. There is still an increase in the number of cases being reported as the scientific community learns more about the disease and the public is becoming more aware of this mental disorder. However there are still many questions left unanswered about this disease, like "Is it genetic?" or "Is a certain type of personality more vulnerable to the disorder?" but many aspects of how people come by the disorder are already answered. MPD is commonly found in adults who were frequently...

Introduction to Psychology

...TPS 101: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY TPS 101 serves as the beginning course in psychology; as such, it is broad in scope. The course will introduce students to the history of psychology, and current paradigms and theories. We will cover neuroscience, sensation, perception, memory, and language, stress and health psychology, personality and social psychology, intelligence, and developmental psychology. Because of time limitations, none of these topics can be covered in great depth. The reference textbooks and the material presented in class will serve as the primary sources for the material to be covered. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness. It is largely concerned with humans, although the behaviour and mental processes of animals can also be part of psychology research, either as a subject in its own right (e.g. animal cognition and ethnology), or somewhat more controversially, as a way of gaining an insight into human psychology by means of comparison (including comparative psychology). Origins of the psychology Near the end of 19th century things started drawing together. Questions raised by philosophers were being...
