In our ever changing world, companies have to adopt new strategies to remain current in their ways of communicating and connecting with partners and exchanging information among members of a team on a global level. Time and space are no longer barriers for the communication process with the advancements with technology nowadays. Since the dawn of communication enhancers such as the internet and cell phones, communication happens at lightning speed. According to the website Educase Learning Initiative, the definition of a virtual meeting is a meeting is that is held in real-time interactions that takes place over the Internet using methods other than face to face interaction such as, “audio and video, chat tools, and application sharing” (Educase Learning Initiative, 2006). Even with these advancements, those who engage in these methods of communicating still have the responsibility of remaining abreast of acceptable cultural norms, etiquette and being both culturally sensitive and respectful. In other words while the virtual meeting eliminates some communication barriers in the sense of space and time, this methods relies solely on the efforts of the speaker and the listener to communicate effectively. Not being face to face takes away from the largest part of communication which would be body language to aid with getting information across more effectively. This is why it is imperative for all parties involved to make the best impression through what they say. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the 3 people presented in the scenario. Initially, the conversation has obstacles because you have 3 people from 3 of different nationalities coming together. Pablo, who is Mexican, Sam, who is American, and Lifang Lin, who is Asian. Sam’s culture comments are a reflection of his own personal views and not the company he represents. His leadership role may seem to reflect the same opinion the company has about diverse cultures. The jokes Sam made are inappropriate for trying to establish mutual grounds to conduct business practices cross culturally. Pablo describing himself as a handsome person could also raise questions about his personality as well as set the tone for the company. His remarks could mean the company hires attractive individuals and discriminate against others who may appear less attractive.
