...Ethics Competency Nasser Mardini Virginia International University Organizational Behavior and HR management – MBA 513 Fall 2011 – Med-Term October 20, 2011 Dr. Shawn Richmond Question 1: Is the "Fight-or-Flight" response evident in this case? Explain Yes. The fight-or-flight response refers to the biochemical and bodily changes that represent a natural reaction to an environmental stressor. When Colombo e-mailed the regional vice president for operations to report the wholesaler who tried to bribe her, he brushed off her complaints in a meeting and she left the office in tears. Question 2: What influences on the stress experience appear to be present? More than one factor influence how the individual experience stress: * Perception of situation Colombo says that the work environment turned hostile in 2005 and therefore it became stressful. * Past experiences Colombo had excellent work in the past, she knew her job was a senior underwriter, and she knew that it do not include bribery. * Social Support There was an absence of social support, Colombo co-workers wanted her fired because of her complaint which made her anxious and could not cope. * Individual Employees are different of the way that they experience and respond to stress, based on their personality. Colombo’s professional standards were being compromised and this caused her to experience stress. Colombo received a top rating that exceeded expectations. But after that was asked...

...What Is Anger? Everyone has been angry and knows what anger is. Anger can vary widely and can be sparked by a variety of things. Anger is a natural and potentially productive emotion. However, anger can get out of control and become destructive and problematic. So why do we get angry? People get angry when their expectations are not met -- whether those expectations are about the future, about themselves, or about others. When our expectations are unmet, we revert to illusions of control, "unrealistically expecting all people to behave and all situations to turn out as we think they should." Anger over these unmet expectations often leads us to blame others and shift aggression towards them. Gary Ginter, a psychologist who specializes in anger management explains that there are several sources of anger: physiological, cognitive, and behavioural. Physiological anger is natural anger. In certain threatening situations, for instance when we are attacked physically, our bodies respond by making us physically angry. Cognitive sources of anger are based on how we perceive things. These perceptions may be accurate...a situation may, indeed, be threatening, or they may not be. Sometimes we will perceive a threat, even though the external situation is not actually as dangerous as we think it is. In other words, there may be no real reason for anger, but our personal biases and emotions take over, leading to aggression. Finally, behavioural sources of anger come from the environment...

...Hyesuk Shin MGT522 Human Capital May 15, 2013 Reflection Paper While I was reading in Robbins’ (2003) chapter 13, I had an opportunity to re-think topics that I have had a negative prejudice about in the past. “Power and Politics” is an inevitable issue that every organization has faced. As one is promoted to higher levels such as manager, they have to be compelled to be involved in this issue deeply. When I had worked before, previous companies were male-dominated organizations. As I was working as a minority woman manager at an organization, I didn’t want to be involved in men’s political power struggles and conflicts. However, reading chapter 13, “Power and Politics”, I realized why I should know and study this issue further. I totally agreed with Robbins’s (2003) opinion “It’s a reality of organizational life and it’s not going to go away. Moreover, by learning how power works in organizations, you’ll be better able to use your knowledge to help you be a more effective manager” (p.365). Knowledge about power and politics will make me a more effective leader in the future. Personally, I was strongly interested in the part called contrasting leadership and power. As a previous manager, I had seen some bad examples where some CEOs used their power improperly for themselves in the organization. Because of these influences, I came to have a negative prejudice against “A leader who has power easily corrupts”. However, Robbins (2003) asserted that several differences...

...| Communication Opinion Paper | Effective Communication | Amanda CummingsHCS/320Sandra AndersonJuly 14, 2013 | | | | Communication is a necessity no matter where you are or what you are doing. This is even more so in the healthcare field. To do so, you must be able to be effective at communication and able to work with many obstacles on a daily bases. In this paper we will cover what effective communication is and what some of the obstacles that are faced in the healthcare field. Basic communication is the ability to send and receive information, decoding the information, and giving feedback. Communication itself is the process of understanding and sharing. (Du Pre, 2005) So in order for it to be effective a person must first be able to send information and wait for the other person to be decode the information and respond to said information. That is only half of it; the sender must then be able to receive the information and process it and then once again give feedback. This is how we communicate. There are other factors that we must also take into consideration when we are communicating like body language and tone of one’s voice. If a doctor or patient has an elevated voice it can set the wrong tone and will only cause problems that can get in the way of a proper diagnosis. If a doctor comes into a room and slightly slams the door out of frustration it can put the patient on edge and will once again be a problem for proper diagnosis. The basic elements...

...ENG 1101 April 10, 2012 Violent Media is Good for Kids Violence existed long before there was violent media. Equating media with behavior shows not only a severe ignorance of history but an ignorance of reality. Violence cannot be stopped as long as there are power inequalities, social hierarchies, as long as people can be hurt, broken or killed, there will be violence. Using media violence constructively and sensibly can provide support for a child's understanding of their anger and frustration. Many of us if not all must have watched some violent cartoons or movies at some point in our lives and even still play violent video games in our homes. But what some people seem to overlook is that most, if not all violent cartoons end with positive feedback. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, Superman, Batman, and many other more all lead up to the defeat of the bad guy who is trying to destroy the world. In every episode, they encounter a new obstacle in which they must defeat in battle in order to save mankind through violence. The threat is eliminated so that life may go on normally; showing kids that good always triumph over evil. Jonathan Freedman in his book "Media Violence Does Not Cause Aggressive Behavior in Children" argues that despite a report from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on the causal link between media violence and aggressive human behavior, there is no scientific evidence that viewing violence on television...

...be hung, and in a way, he feels it is his fault. Abigail wants to be with Proctor because she feels that the affair she had with him means that there is a lot of love between them, and Proctor knows that she wants to get rid of Goody Proctor and feels it is all his fault. Proctor’s main motivation is prove that Abigail is making this all up so he can prove his wife innocent. He also just wants his wife back because he knows that she is innocent. The thoughts going through Proctor’s head are most likely about his affair, and how is one sin could indirectly kill his wife. He is also probably thinking about how stupid the whole town is that they can’t see past the lies of the afflicted girls. Proctors dominant emotions are sadness, remorse, anger, and disappointed. He is sad that nobody believes him, and he basically is the cause of hi wife being accused because of his affair. He is angry that nobody believes him, and they can’t see the obvious state of mind that the girls are in, which is crazy. He is disappointed in the judges for being so biased and not wanting to see the truth. The acting choices I made were obvious because of his...

...swing, and I held on to her for dear life. I've never had the thought of falling out of or off a ride, other than a Ferris wheel, which I hate, but I just knew she would sail right out of the ship and fall to her death. Needless to say, I was shaken when we got off the ride, ready to go home. When we got back to the car, a lot more people were at the fair, and I was blocked in on all sides. I was not amused. One thing I had learned from my many car-pushing experiences was that a car in neutral or out of gear could be pushed by one person on level ground. I checked the car in front of my car, and sure enough, it was unlocked—an automatic. I put it in neutral and checked the emergency break, which had not been set. I channeled my inner anger and pushed the car far enough so that I drive my car out. Then since...

...“Town up ahead, 3 kilotimers” my little brother Mathew said with confusion as he attempted to read the street sign. “Big brother, what does kilotimers mean is it something we can eat?” he asked. “First of all its kilometres” I corrected “and second it’s how far away we are from the upcoming town. Not something we eat” I answered with a grin on my face. Mathew is my younger brother, with his long dark thin hair and his bright blue eyes. He was covered in dirt, his green jacket, grey pants and his adorable orange racing t-shirt. His favourite toy was an action-man figurine which he took everywhere, he kept in his back-pack along with his other “collectable toys”. After our parents past away from a radioactive explosion I found myself relying on Mathew just as much as he relied on me. I relied on him to tell me where we are for he had much better eye sight than I did, for the radiation that had created this barren wasteland had caused major damage to my eyes restricting the amount of light entering them making it hard to make out object or even words in this world where the sun only comes out as a miracle. As we came closer to the seamlessly abandoned town the common stench of decomposing bodies focused me to breathe through my mouth unlike Mathew for he had no sense of smell. “Still not used to the smell yet big brother?” Mathew said with a grin on his face. Mathew didn’t need a sense of smell to know what is around us he would always use my facial expressions to say make out the...

...Receiving Feedback So for this project, I decided to ask one of my small group members for feedback and feedforward. In particular, I choose to ask a classmate that I was constantly paired with when we split the projects apart into smaller groups. I asked him: “What do you think are some of the areas I need to work on to improve my leadership skills in a professional environment?” The outcome was fantastic, as I knew he would give me a straightforward feedback. He was very honest and really wanted me to improve myself so he took this opportunity to provide the best possible feedback. I learned a lot about my leadership skills that I never knew and I was grateful for talking to him about this. My partner gave me really good feedback that I really took in and listened too. I realized how important listening was from the readings as it is the central skill in the establishment and maintenance of interpersonal relationships, which in turn establishes teamwork. But most of all, listening to him and the details he describe about how I could improve myself really promoted problem solving abilities just like the readings mentioned. For example, he mentioned that I needed to better understand the different work styles of my group mates so I can better delegate the work when I’m leading the group due to the fact that some people like to finish their work early and some like to procrastinate. Another feedback was that I needed to spend the same amount of time working...

...1 The Great No-No If you picked up this book because of difficulties in your own relationship, then your simple act indicates two important things about you. First, it signifies that you’re feeling some pain. I’m not talking about the obviously physical, just-cut-your-finger kind of pain. I’m talking about the kind of pain that hurts somewhere in your spirit. But even though your pain is spiritual, it can still be described in physical terms. If your relationship is in acute crisis, then the pain may feel sharp and piercing. Or if your frustration is chronic, then the pain may feel like a dull ache or perhaps an empty, hungry kind of sensation. Another possibility is a stifling, suffocating kind of feeling. You may associate it with your chest, your heart, the pit of your stomach, the back of your neck or even your head. But wherever you feel it, whether it’s subtle or intense, you’re still feeling some form of pain. You may also have the disturbing sense that your life wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. You started this marriage with dreams that you hoped your relationship would fulfill. You wanted love, respect, and a soul-mate with whom you could share life’s experiences. You not only wanted to be nurtured, but you wanted to be appreciated for being the loving person you always knew you could be. You wanted the opportunity to let your love unfold, and now you fear that the opportunity is passing you by. The second thing indicated by your picking up this book is that you...

...ASHA GULLED PYSCHOLOGY 2314 UNIT 3 DISCUSSION Violence in media and aggression It is quite hard to really pick up what is main the cause of teenage violence/aggression. There are many factors that contribute to violence. Violent media being one of them, one would also like to know other factors such as upbringing of teenagers, gene factors, and environmental factors. I believe that children who are brought up in a violent home are more likely to be violent teenagers. As we know, emotional instability of parents can make them to maltreat or physical and emotionally abuse their children. This can have huge effect on their children behavior as they grow older since it becomes conditioned in their minds to be aggressive. We also see many times that teenagers like to be accepted in a certain group; their peers and this can encourage teenagers who have never been involved in violence be violent because of their peer. I believe that theme of violent media is all about who is going to beat the other, that is the weak versus the strong and when teenagers are exposed to this as they are children, they grow to believe they are heroes who cannot be over powered hence became aggressive. We live in a society whereby family and marriage has lost its meaning. Therefore we end up with a lot divorces and single parents raising their children. To add to this most parents have to work to provide for the family therefore there is less family time and less parental guidance and more television...

...Hamlet: Another “Average Joe” The word “prince” is usually used to describe someone of noble origin or in the case of Michael Jackson, set apart from the rest of the “peasants”. Princes are supposed to live separate lives that a normal person can not fathom. However, Hamlet’s life is not much different than the lives of ordinary people today in that he has many of the same problems. Like contemporary people of today, Hamlet suffers from family problems, troubles following authority, and anger management issues. In America, the divorce rate is about half of all marriages. Sometimes those broken couples conceived children. There is a chance that the mother will remarry. When this happens, the child has a new father; his stepfather. Often, the child resents his stepfather at first a does Hamlet. For instance, in Act III, scene iv, lines 72-75, Hamlet tells his mother, “This was your husband. Look you now what follows. Here is your husband, like a mildewed ear blasting his wholesome brother.” That quote means that Hamlet did not approve of the man his mother decided to marry. He preferred to have his real father. Like the classic teenager, Hamlet has issues accepting his new father into his life. It is pitiful because, he has to suffer from a broken household. After a death in the family, a person may do something rash. It is chilling to think what might happen. Now Hamlet is not put in the back of a police car, but he does suffer some severe repercussions...
