...BRIEFING Non-European Labour Migration to the UK AUTHOR: DR SCOTT BLINDER PUBLISHED: 30/01/2012 NEXT UPDATE: 30/01/2013 1st Revision www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk BRIEFING: Non-European Labour Migration to the UK This briefing examines labour migration to the UK among people who are not from the European Economic Area (EEA). Labour migrants are those whose primary reason for migrating or whose legal permission to enter the UK is for employment. Key Points Non-EEA labour migration increased over the 1990s and early 2000s but has declined since a peak in 2004-2006. Skilled and highly-skilled workers (Tier 1 and 2 of the Points-Based System) take up slightly less than half of entry visas issued for work. A majority of non-EEA labour migrants coming to the UK are male; a majority of newly arriving labour migrants are aged 25-44. The largest numbers of non-EEA labour migrants are nationals of Asian countries, followed by the Americas; labour migration among Africans has declined since at least 2004. Understanding the evidence Labour migration involves people coming to the UK for the purpose of paid work. Depending on the source of data, measures of labour migration might involve people who say that they are coming to the UK because of a definite job or to look for work (International Passenger Survey data), or people who have permission to enter the UK through a workrelated visa (administrative data on visas and passenger entries). IPS and administrative...

...2004 allowed migration flows of A8 and other EU migrants such as Polish to easily come into the UK. This resulted in a general increase in the number of UK immigrants as more people were able to more easily enter and had better access to higher paying jobs. Another reason is that English is a well-known language. The majority of EU member speak English as their second language, and so by coming to England they will have an easier time trying to communicate with people than if they spoke no English at all. This also leads onto another point about the fact that there are already communities of people from different countries living in the UK. This will make it easier for immigrants to fit in, making the UK an attractive migration destination. Only Ireland, Sweden and the UK give EU members total freedom to pass through borders; other EU members have a multitude of restrictions. This makes it more favourable to come to the UK, where there will be less of a hassle to get through. The five tier visa system, introduced from 2008 – 2010, is also heavily responsible for a change the number of migrants seeking asylum in the UK. The replacement of the previous visa system has made it much more difficult for those who aren’t EU citizens to enter the UK. The criteria for the five tier visa system will have to be met first in order to be granted with a visa allowing them to stay in the UK. On another note, transportation has become more efficient and cheaper. Since the industrial revolution...

...FOREIGN EMPLOYMENT: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE John Smith Grantham University BA405 Multinational Management December 12, 2014 FOREIGN EMPLOYMENT: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE I have often thought of working and living in a foreign country. As a soldier, I was able to achieve that while stationed in Germany and South Korea. As a soldier though, one does not get the full effect of living within a society that has norms, customs and traditions different from those we find in the United States. To work and live in a foreign country as a private citizen would be a terrific experience. Much thought has been given over the years as to where. Perhaps Belize, where it is always warm, costs are comparatively inexpensive and a place that has a motto for tourist that says “go slow”. There’s probably not going to be much going there though where one can pull down a livable wage with benefits. Africa has also sounded good from time to time. I once met a soldier from Ghana. He informed me one day he was going home for vacation and as the conversation progressed, I learned that on an income of less than $1500 one could live like a king with an estate, a driver and servants. However, Western Africa may be a bit hostile for my taste. As the list narrows, I am left with Mexico, Germany and England. I have never been to England. To begin with, I would never give up my citizenship as an American. I enjoy the American exceptionalism and the...

...pay for the wall. If they were to refuse, he would seize money being sent to Mexico by illegal immigrants, increase fees on temporary visas, border crossing cards and at ports of entry to the US. Trump will dissolve refugee camps, and use the money to help place children in safe homes. He will issue green cards in intervals. He plans to do this to give employers time in between green card intervals to hire workers. He intends to end welfare abuse by having candidates prove they can pay for housing and other needs. Donald Trump wants to start a jobs program for inner city kids. It would replace one now in place that is for foreign youth. His overall idea is to fix what we have, protect the country by keeping possibly dangerous people out and give American workers jobs. The United States is not the only country that is debating over immigration. The UK recently just made a very large decision regarding it. The United Kingdom had the Brexit vote this past June. Brexit is a mix of the words “Britain” and “exit”. (5)The Brexit vote was to decide whether or not the UK would leave the European Union. This vote ended with majority voting to leave the EU. This is astonishing, as Britain will be the first country to purposely leave the European Union in its fifty-eight years. Brexit came about because of the Schengen visa agreement. (6)The Schengen visa agreement says that if one has been allowed into one of the twenty-eight EU countries, they are allowed to go to any other EU country...
